Check out the extreme patriotism here with the red, white, and blue dessert! I can’t really take credit for the blue (okay, teal) cake. That chicken Amy first notified me about it last week. The recipe is from the Betty Crocker site. It is just a doctored up cake mix, but who cares! It is pretty achingly sweet, but hey, throw some ice cream on there, and you’re good to go (I also made strawberry compote to go with it).
We just had a patio put in, and we have been putting it to good use. I guess my mother decided it was cold outside, but she braved the elements and ate out there. My brother and I always joke that eating outdoors is something white people like.

I’ve made blue velvet cake (oh god, the vast quantity of food coloring!), which was awesome but had side effects. Yours looks fun and like it has less food coloring. Awesome!
yeah, white people. my husband and i are about the only people in our whole neighborhood who sit in lawn chairs outside in the yard… bbq sometimes too…that cake looks scary.
Now that you point it out (the white people & the outside eating), I see it! Your mom’s cute hooded and hatted head is a silent protest.
What I don’t get is why people want to eat at sidewalk cafes in NYC. It’s so dirty and noisy and non A/C’d.

ok, a little late but had to comment…Japanese people LOVE to picnic outside and they are masters with the portable hibachi for the beach/camping and Japanese people are practically born planning their next hanami party. BTW your mom is super cute!
