body blockin’

I am about to journey into sleeve hell now that I have completed the front and back of Split Personality. Here she is a’blockin’:
split body blocking.JPG
I’m not the most detailed blocker. I just kind of measured, pinned the pieces to a towel, then spritzed them with water. The Cecil yarn is not the best yarn for this particular design, since it is rather heavy and drapey. A stiffer, lighter yarn would probably work better. But, I am not so picky, so it will just be a slouchy sweater. I am going to shorten the sleeves by a good 6 centimeters (do Germans have freakishly long arms or something?). I had to shorten the body quite a bit, too. We’ll see what happens, since I am horrible at sizing.
Hey, the yarn I won on ebay came today! The auction ended on Saturday, so that was super speedy.

I don’t know what I’m going to make yet, maybe a zip cardie, since I have an unnatural and extreme attraction to them?
The mailman also brought me some lovely chocolate from Mindy. Muchas gracias, merci beaucoup, and arigato gozaimasu!

slippermania!

Nancy has written up the pattern for her grandmother’s crazy slippers to share with all you knitting fiends out there, so everyone get on board the slipper train! (I’m thinking a pair in cotton might be just the ticket for summer … )

Random Ugly Technicolor Dream Slippers
Nancy’s basic rules:
* Use size 9 needles
* Buy your yarn from garage sales, or get the cheapest & brightest stuff you can find at the store
* Randomly snip off a color when you feel like it, reach into your bag without looking, and tie on whatever new color you grab (Yes, I said

crazy knittin’ fun

I started this morning off by winning some GGH Goa in hot pink on ebay! Woohoo! Very excited, since I have been wanting to knit with GGH for some time now. After that, I went to San Luis Obispo to knit with the Knitters’ Guild people. As an added bonus, I met two new online people: Thuy, who drove up from Santa Barbara, and Nancy, who found my blog when she was doing a search for a local sandwich place! I have a photo of them, but I realized I didn’t ask them if I could post it online, so I’m not going to right now. Instead, I will show you the crazy slippers Nancy knits for every member of her family every year:
crazyslippers.JPG
The story is her grandmother used to knit these for everyone throughout the year. One relative started using them to wash his car! Nancy decided to continue the tradition, and she’s added to it by establishing some rules: yarn comes from garage sales, and when she changes colors, she just sticks her hand into the bag and randomly grabs.
After the guild meeting, which was a lot of fun, Thuy, her husband, Nancy, and I went out for some yummy Japanese food. Oh, and did I mention it was around 80 degrees outside? It doesn’t get much better than this! Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

phildar arrival

Woohoo, today I got these in the mail:
phildar mags.JPG
I ordered them from Knit ‘n’ Tyme in Canada. I wanted the Famille book because of one of the zip cardies in there, and I wasn’t going to order the spring 04 Tendances book, but, well, I’m easily influenced. I need to look through Tendances again, but during the first perusal I did not see anything I wanted to knit. I have another Tendances book that had the same effect. The designs in Tendances seem to be rather fashion-forward, and to be honest, I’m not really happenin’ in the style department!
Good thing: Say what you will about the US Postal Service, but I’ve always kind of liked them. They now have a new service (new to me, anyway) called Click n Ship that allows you to print out a shipping label, pay for your Priority Mail package, and have it picked up at your house. No more trips to the post office! You have to have a scale unless you’re sending in a Priority Mail flat-rate envelope, but still, how cool is that?

imagine all the peep-uhl

Just as I was fretting over what to blog about, Pete the UPS guy came and dropped off a little box from Lion Brand. The Great Cheap Yarn Fiesta continues! I present Lion Brand Imagine, a mohair/nylon blend:
imagine.JPG
The color is cerise, and yes, it’s quite bright and hot! I plan to make Grace from the latest knitty with this. First, though, I must finish Split Personality (formerly known as Aubergine Delight. Greta referred to it as Split Personality, and I loved the name so much I had to change it).
Right now my project lineup is arranged according to wearability and weather. Soon it will be much to hot to wear long sleeves, so I must make haste and finish up Split Personality, a long-sleeved sweater. Next will be Grace, since I’m guessing the nylon/mohair blend is going to be hot, steamy, hot. Then I will return to the Oh What a Relief T, a short-sleeved, cotton/acrylic number. I’d like to make Gigi, Bonne Marie’s fabulous new design, but cotton fleece has wool in it, and just the mention of the word wool in the summer months here will be enough to start the sweat dripping.
Notice the little reflector person nestled in the yarn? That was my kinder surprise egg toy today! Her name is Miss Love, and if you think I’m kidding, look at this:
kinderegg prizes.JPG
Each prize comes with a little sheet that tells you which toy series that toy belongs to! You can bet your little crocheted booties I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I come across Mister Strong (don’t want Miss Love to get lonely, after all).

the incredible, edible egg

I’m talking about the incredible, edible KINDER SURPRISE EGGS, of course. I accidentally ordered some from Germany, and they arrived today in all their ovoid splendor:
kindereggs.JPG
These things are addictive. Not only is the chocolate quite tasty, but the surprise toys hidden inside are so amazing! The variety is staggering as well, which makes it hard to share these eggs. I want to hoard them all! All for me! We’ve opened two so far, and, well, the toys were kind of lame. I got Doctor Diesel and Petrocoyote, some weird coyote figuring standing next to a gas pump. As I have mentioned before, kinder eggs are not readily available in the US. If you have some fine Canadian or German friends, they might be willing to send you a couple. You can also visit your closest German delicatessen.
Lest you are feeling annoyed at the recent lack of knitting content, here is an in-progress shot of Aubergine Delight*, sweater #13 from Rebecca #27:
aubergine in progress.JPG
That Cecil yarn by Schoeller Stahl is the splittiest yarn I’ve ever handled. It’s like the strands want NOTHING to do with one another. But, you know, it’s all okay.
*Is it me, or does there seem to be an unspoken rule that knitbloggers must name their sweaters? I don’t think I ever named my sweaters before …

did someone say caramel?

I feel so much better today that I am practically giddy with delight! Thanks for all your well wishes. I should probably talk about knitting, but today I would rather talk about chocolate, okay? Have any of you noticed the recent flood of caramel-infused sweets (no, of course you haven’t, because, well, you probably all have better things to do than to obsess about the latest candy offerings. So, aren’t you glad you have ME to tell you?)? I have seen Caramel Ho-Hos, Milky Way Caramels (which I never would have known about if it weren’t for Threadbear Rob!), Caramel M&Ms (okay, so they fancy them up by calling them Dulce de Leche), caramel milkshakes at Jack in the Box, and then these, Hershey’s Caramel Kisses:
hersheys.JPG
(I bought them in the interest of science). Anyway, I’m sure there are many others. How do you explain this new interest in caramel?
Other chocolate news:
– a friend of mine just got back from Brooklyn (that would be in NY), and she brought back some Jacques Torres chocolates! WOOHOO!!! I would have taken a photo, but I received them on a puny day. I felt well enough to try one, and it was delicious–rich and smooth and creamy! I told Peter he should try one, so he disappeared into the kitchen for about 5 seconds. When he came back, I asked if he tried one, and he said, “Uh, yeah, well, a couple.” So I asked, “How many?” “Uhh, four.” “FOUR?!? But you were only gone a few seconds!” “I couldn’t stop myself,” he protested. “Well, were they all the same or different,” I asked, fishing for details and a juicy description. “Different.”
– I must thank Rae in Tokyo for helping me with a chocolate mission. Insane brother lived in Japan at one point, and there he grew to love a Japanese chocolate bar called Vessel in the Fog. You can’t get them in the US, so Rae graciously tracked down 15 bars and sent them to my bro for his birthday! SPREADIN’ THE CHOCOLATELY LOVE AROUND THE WORLD, BABY.
– And finally, if you want to read about how a chocoholic and chocolate expert spends his holidays, go to chocophile and read about his vacation in Paris (it’s the April 14 post).

full upright position

Holy moly, I have been SICK. Major Punes. Flat on my back for the entire weekend! Thankfully, though, I was feeling fine-ish on Friday so was able to make the trip to San Francisco to visit Megan. She is doing okay, though she wishes she were doing better and healing faster! Her scars look better than I thought they would. There is some weird healing happening with the new boob, so they just have to wait and see what happens with that. It was odd to see Megan so tired and having to move so slowly–that’s not the Megan I know! But, that same Megan spark is there: just this morning I called her to see how she is doing, and she said she is doing so-so, but then she tells me she has to go get her bikini wax in San Mateo today, and oh, maybe she should go to Target, and boy, she wishes she could go to Palo Alto to buy some cake. She just keeps on truckin’!
It was a bummer not being able to do a bit more in the Bay Area (I was sick on Saturday morning and could not even enjoy a Bay Area coffee!!!), but the most important things I accomplished: I got to see Megan, I was able to see a couple of other good friends, and I got to eat a cherry cornmeal scone from the Cheeseboard in Berkeley (if you are EVER in Berkeley and love bread, you really MUST go to the Cheeseboard). Also, Peter had an absolutely wonderful time at the boat show. Looking on the bright side–that’s what I’m trying to do in the 21st century!

malaise

This morning I woke up with the punes. My upper stomach was all prickly, and I felt weak and blechy. I’ve been hunched over all day. At least it gave me a good excuse to just loll about on the couch and start reading The Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan Lethem. I need to be better by tomorrow, though, because we are heading up to the Bay Area, and I need to be well and upbeat to see Megan! It’s been two weeks since her mastectomy and DIEP flap procedure, and she is not healing as quickly as she would like. I just can’t imagine going through months of chemo then having to get completely chopped up. She is one of the bravest people I know. Don’t take your health for granted, people (or peeps, if you prefer)!
I’ll leave you with something fun. I recently joined the State Swap, and this was the first package I received. It’s from Carla in Michigan:
stateswap goodies.JPG
There’s a Russian shawl, handknit washcloths, stitch markers, yarn, a bracelet beading kit, and dried blueberries, cherries, and lime curd all from Michigan!
