cupcake delight

Megan told me that Hostess came out with purple and orange cupcakes, so of course I was immediately on the lookout for them. I happened upon some at a gas station in Ventura!

Isn’t it beautiful? Known as the Wonka Cake, it is part of a promotion for the upcoming release of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. The cream filling is also purple! It basically tasted like a Hostess Cupcake, but I was a tad disappointed with the frosting on top. I love the chocolatey fudgy plasticky taste of the classic Hostess cupcake topping and thus was a bit taken aback with the purple frosting. I swear it had a tinge of grape flavor, but maybe I was just imagining it. At any rate, it tasted nothing like chocolate.
On another note, I saw an ad in a magazine today for the Starbucks green tea frappuccino. I had one of these in Japan several years ago and never thought I’d see it in the US! I checked the Starbucks web site, but there was no mention of the elusive green tea frappuccino. Does anyone out there have any inside info on this?

The Starbuck’s near me was sampling them on Saturday morning. They are supposed to be out in stores tomorrow (7/13). Can’t wait. The sample I had was divine!

Green tea frappuccino sounds awesome! Too bad there isn’t a Starbucks around here for an hour and fifteen minute drive, even though I have written several times begging them to build one here…
Eggplant, you are a junk food junkie. Have you tried the Little Debbie orange cupcakes? Suprisingly good!

MMMMM! Matcha! Life in Japan seems to get less different from home every day. Or maybe home is just getting to be more like Japan…

  4. Illanna says:

I saw somebody drinking one at a Starbucks inside a Barnes and Noble Bookstore on Sunday. That store always has different things than the regular Starbucks serve, though.

  5. KarenK says:

I found this info: The drink is green, like green tea ice cream.
You can make it at home:
    – 2 scoops of vanilla ice-cream
    – 2 teaspoons of green tea powder (available at tea places like Ten Ren’s Tea in Chinatown, or Matcha)
    – a little of milk or water, as needed, to dilute the mixture
Blend everything together in a blender. Add more ice-cream or sugar to adjust for sweetness.

I was in a Starbucks this weekend that said they would be out on Thursday.

I have got to find those cupcakes!!! I love purple. I wish I could save them. LOL, but I know they will get eaten rather quickly.

  8. christina says:

Wow,that’s some gorgeous cupcake! I’ve yet to set foot in a Starbuck’s (since I live in Germany and there are only, like, three of them here, I think) but I’d walk a mile a green tea frappuccino. Yum.

  9. kim says:

The best part about these cupcakes is how they are totally color coordinated with your blog!
Alas, no hostess cupcakes here, and while I haven’t been to a Starbucks here as of yet, I don’t imagine they’ll have these. Although I just sort of realized that I haven’t yet been to a Starbucks in France… next time I’m in Paris I may have to give it a go!

Have you seen those Tazo brand cartons of chai latte mix? I saw some of those on a Starbucks counter, (I want to say it was a Starbucks in a barnes & noble) and next to the regular chai they also had cartons of green tea latte mix. So you might be able to have them at home too! Too bad there’s no Starbucks in my hometown and the closest ones are an hour’s drive away. I should have bought that carton when I had the chance!

You are a braver soul than I. That cupcake is really quite pretty, especially with its matching plastic holder, but I’d be afraid to eat it (chocolate doesn’t naturally come in shades of gold and purple, does it??). I love your fast food/prepackaged food experiments, though. You’ve brought some very fun products to my attention.

You know I think of those and I think…LOTS OF SUGAR… but what the helll right I mean it isnt an everyday thing 🙂
    I am so jealous!

I couldn’t find it on the starbucks website, but I was just in one yesterday and noticed the Green Tea Frappucino Blended Creme. It was out yesterday afternoon, there was a poster up and everything. It sounded interesting, but I didn’t know it was so new. It’d been a couple of weeks since I was last in a Starbucks, so didn’t know.

  17. jodi says:

yep — out yesterday in vancouver & victoria, canada. but then, we are a little obsessed here with the starbucks ; )

  18. Nancy says:

You’re in luck! I just saw the green tea drinks at the Starbucks over by Target in Paso this morning. They have the frappucino and a green tea shaken lemonade.

  19. Sharlene says:

The food section in our local paper had a blurb about them, but they are Tazo teas, and blended with other flavors like melon and lemonade. I don’t know if they have a plain matcha flavor or not.

  20. kelly says:

You know I’m all over a green tea frappuccino… hopefully they’ll make a sugar-free version!

  21. Julie says:

My local Starbucks has them (I live about 45 minutes south of Chicago, but don’t know if Chicago is serving them yet). I almost got one yesterday, but really needed a caffeine kick and passed. Are they good? Do they really tast of green tea? So many of the frappuccino’s seem to tast more like sugar than anything, so I was skeptical.

  22. Jenn says:

I know where I’m heading on my way home… Sarbucks! Green tea anything is so yummy!
I have to go with everyone’s take on the Wonka Cakes… I might buy them to look at, but I don’t think I could eat them. But, then again, I don’t eat Hostess cupcakes ever anyway. But they sure are pretty!

  23. freecia says:

Jamba Juice also added Matcha to their menu http://www.jambajuice.com/menuguide/

  24. A.J. says:

I tried the cupcakes–they were at my local 7-11. At first I thought there was a mint aftertaste. Then I realized it was probably the purple food coloring.
    I only ate one.

  25. Patti says:

I’ve never had a hostess cake but I noticed the Wonka Cakes were all sold out at the Target today!

  26. Danny Cruz says:

    OH MY GOD.
i really need one of these Wonka Cakes =~~ They’re not selling it here on Brasil.

Hi, Mariko (and everyone else)! I meant to e-mail you when I found about about this… I (unfortunately and embarrassingly!) work at a Starbucks in greater Boston. We premiered the “Green Tea Blended Creme” and “Shaken Iced Green Tea” today (Wednesday). The Blended Creme is the “Frappuccino” style drink, without the coffee. It’s made with a sweetened (sorry, not sugar-free) milk base, melon flavored syrup, and Tazo Matcha powder. It tastes just like green tea ice cream! The melon syrup adds sweetness, but not really any melon flavor (which is a good thing, I think!). The Shaken Tea is made with Tazo’s “Zen” tea, which is green tea with mint and lemon. According to Starbucks’ standards, it’s supposed to be sweetened with the melon syrup, but I think it’s a lot better with the simple syrup (or Splenda). I hope everyone who’s looking for these drinks finds them!
    =) Kelli

We’ve had the green tea frappuccinos in NZ for… maybe a couple years now? They’re good if you like green tea ice cream.

  29. Leslie says:

It’s a work of art. But I can’t imagine putting it in my mouth. Urp.

  30. Kitty says:

Samples were being given out at the S’bucks in my neighborhood – I think it was a green tea lemonade. Very refreshing.

  31. carrie m says:

i simply MUST find those cupcakes! was the cake part purple, too? i admit that i’d probably like the grape flavor.

  32. laurie says:

Daddy, I want a Wonka cupcake! (Do I sound like Violet or a Charlie and the Chocolate factory nerd?)

  33. kimberly says:

i had those green tea frappucchinos while in hong kong! thanks so much for blogging about them – i would have been in the dark for far too long. i’ll have to hop down to my nearest starbucks and check it out! 🙂 🙂
