sock it to me

I recently participated in a sock swap. I desperately attempted to overcome my bad sock-knitting mojo so my recipient wouldn’t get really lame socks. I tried to compensate by using yummy yarn, a cashmere-silk blend. And speaking of yummy, take a gander at the socks I received:

These eggplant-hued Lorna’s Laces socks are from Lynette, and they fit perfectly.
I am still hacking, and I’ve polished off the bottle of Delsym. I’ve also tried Tessalon Pearls, but those only seemed to work for a few hours. This morning I was awakened by my own coughing, and I coughed so hard I kind of threw up. Tonight I’m breaking out the Nyquil!

Kind of threw up? “Kind of”? Isn’t that like a “little pregnant”?
Anyway, I’ve been there and it sucks, I hope you feel better soon. I had a pretty nasty cough last week but I tried some zinc cough lozenges (Thera Zinc) which tasted horrible and the generic cough syrup with dextro… & doxy… and together they kicked its @ss. And a bunch of spicy chicken soup with stir fry veggies added. Of course, you are probably up to here with suggestions–again, hope you feel better soon!

Oh man! I know exactly what you mean about kind of throwing up. Hang in there!!

I know how you feel. I HATE coughing at night. Two years ago I had pneumonia and coughed so hard I cracked a rib.
Delsym is the best over the counter cough syrup (according to a super pharmacist and a Doctor I quizzed, it is not the ingredients so much as the form they are in, but it needs to be shaken really well to get the best effect), but it sounds like time for prescription cough syrup. Hydrocodone, which is the controlled substance in Vicodin is also the controlled substance in prescription cough syrup. So if you have Vicodin (or anything else containing hydrocodone), take it with the Delsym. This will fix you right up. Just don’t take anything else with acetaminophen (Tylenol) in it at the same time.

Cool socks! The yarn you used loks dee-licious, too. Socks are a great project–I need to sign up for a sock exchange one of these days.

  5. hannah says:

oooh, i feel your pain! how did you manage to fall asleep in the first place? last week when i was coughing so much in the middle of the night i would get so frustrated that i would be coughing, crying and not sleeping all at the same time!

  6. eleny says:

    Neat socks!
Take good care of yourself and get lots of rest if you can. Stay away from cold drinks. That’s what I did when I had that cough several weeks ago. Had to take coricidine since I have high bp. That’s not the best help advice for you.
So, let me tell you a story to cheer you instead. Recently, I found your blog when Googling for “eggplant” something. I’ve crafted all my life so I enjoyed your blog and saved the url. Then I followed one of your links to another blog. One thing led to another and now I have a long list of places I peek at while listening to talk radio streaming on the web. Joy!
    Thanks a bunch!

Hmmm, maybe now you have sinus issues that need an antibiotic?? Anyway, here’s a suggestion I know you will like…..I’ve been coughing with sinus issues , and right before I go to sleep, I suck on some kind of candy! That seems to coat my throat for a while, and then repeat as necessary!

  8. Terri says:

Mariko, I’m three weeks (yes, WEEKS) into a rotten cold/cough thing and I am still waking myself up at night. Cough syrup, throat losenges, lots of liquids and plenty of rest, I’m told. Hmph, how are you supposed to rest when you can’t stop coughing?! Hang in there – and if all else fails, there’s always chocolate!

  9. Gina says:

Oh my! I do hope you feel better soon. Maybe it’s time to phone the doctor?

  10. Bonney says:

I’ve never heard of Tessalon Pearls; what does that take care of? Hope you’re feeling better soon!

  11. Chris says:

Sending healthy thoughts your way, but I’m sure those spiffy socks will heal what ails ya.

  12. J Strizzy says:

They’re not lame! I LOVE them! I don’t know what you’re talking about, with this bad sock mojo crap. I’ve been wearing them to sleep every night because they’re so nice and soft and cosy.

  13. Denice says:

I had the same thing. Here’s what I did–one I went to the doctor (you might need to do this–hurry, it’s Friday!) and got a script for cough medicine–Phenergan with Codeine and an antibiottic–a great 5 day pk. called Zithromax. But I swear, what worked best were some OTC pills called Mucinex (maybe you’ve seen the ads) that broke down the phlem. What a relief!
I have also found your site via different Google searchs (i.e. Crocs, cupcakes). Feel better, dear!

  14. megan says:

Pomegranate juice is the way forward.
I don’t know about all these cough medicines, but if you can get pure squeezed pomegranates, or even better squeeze your own with a couple of oranges – i am sure you will be well on the way to recovery.

  15. thuy says:

i hate it when i can’t sleep cause my coughing fits are waking me. nyquil is so good for knocking you out. hope you feel better soon!

  16. sue says:

    it’s not pertussis?? Whooping cough?
Has this been ruled out? SF Chron did an article about it this fall sometime. Terrible persistant cough, “racking” was the term used I think. Not to be an alarmist, but, get it checked out?
(I hope it’s not and that you feel better already) happiest new year to you! >^..^

  17. lynette says:

oh no! i hope you feel better. it sucks being sick. btw, the socks look great on you.

  18. carolyn says:
