groats and farina

Egads, am I really going to talk about food again today? Sorry. It’s just that I went to Bob’s Red Mill Store today, and it was so great that I have to share. The store has every Bob’s Red Mill product you can imagine. I highly recommend visiting the store if you’re ever in the Portland area (if you’re into whole grains and stuff, anyway). Here’s one aisle:

And they have bin food, too!

Who knew there were so many wheat alternatives!
Here’s what I brought home:

I’m looking forward to trying the Brown Rice Farina for breakfast tomorrow.

Love Bob’s Mill! Yum yum yum.

  3. Cher says:

Ah, you lucky woman! I love Bob’s stuff. I hope to be closer to the source someday soon.

  4. Stacey says:

I love their stuff also – I live on the East coast, but I can find some of it in my local stores (thank goodness!) I love their hot cereals! YUM!

You’d probably enjoy Gluten-Free Girl. Shauna takes great pictures, cooks/bakes(!) fabulous food, and writes about it in such a way that even I, with no official food limitations, find excuses to tag along with her.

Oh, I love the brown rice farina! Does your naturopath prohibit fats? I like to cook three days worth at a time. I saute the grain in some brummel and brown until it smells toasty, then add the water and finish cooking. Then I throw in some nuts or cranberries or whatever and store in containers. Good stuff!!
    Yummm…

I think you’re lucky too. Most of the supermarkets here stock a good range of the products, but it must be great to buy them at the source. I’ve tried some of the recipes on their packages with good success. Happy eating!

How is it that I lived in Oregon for 7 years and never thought to go to the Bob store? Now I have to pay a premium out here in the culinary wasteland of the Midwest. Hurumpf.
I hear you guys have been having a dreary stretch; I hope it brightens up soon!

Oh, my, gosh! I love the Bob milled flours that we have available here in Salt Lake City. I had NO idea he had so many offerings. You are so lucky to have the store in town! Thanks for turning me on to the website!

ooo brown rice farina – i can’t believe how good that sounds. and man, i could eat every bagel in this city right now…

  14. Hey, I just went there a couple of days before you! (and I don’t even live in Portland anymore.) I was visiting Portland-area relative last weekend, and my SIL suggested we go to Bob’s Red Mill for breakfast on Saturday. We did and along came my mom and niece as well. The breakfast was yummy, but the shopping was better! As soon as I finished eating I got a cart and happily went up and down each isle looking at all the pretty products. I filled the trunk of my car with two shopping bags full of Bob’s Red Mill goodness. I love their new building too – a red barn! I’m posting on my blog tomorrow about it with a photo of the outside!

I was looking up Hello Kitty knits on Google, when it came upon one of your older posts from about one year ago, with an HK knitting pattern mag. Do you still have it? Did you make anything with it? I am totally obbessed with HK, even have a tattoo! I would love to have a copy of it…

A Bob’s Red Mill STORE? Ooooh, now I’m really excited about moving out to Portland!

  17. Carol says:

Oooh, looks like fun. I love browsing bulk food bins…hope everything was yummy! Anyhow, I wanted to ask you about Deedle’s booties…she looks so cute in them! We’re taking Arrow the beagle to Tahoe next month…I think she’ll need some booties. Where did you get Deedle’s, may I ask? Thanks!

Mariko, I hope you feel better soon! I was sad to see yr Jan 5 post. I’ll send out some “you’ll be able to eat unlimited amounts of wheat and candy soon” vibes 🙂

Oh, next time I am in Portland I will have to go there . . . it’s only 3hrs away. =)

  20. Adrienne says:

Oh man. Another reason to want to visit Portland. Some day, somehow. I love Bob’s Red Mill products. I think I would have to set aside a huge budget in the store. Then again, I might have problems crossing back into Canada after purchasing all those whole grain products. Damn.
