and a happy halloween to all!

It was a beautiful, super cold day here in Portland. I happened to be near the Helen Bernhard Bakery today, so I popped in to get some Halloween cookies.

Helen Bernhard’s has been around forever. We used to get the cloverleaf rolls every year for Thanksgiving, and all our birthday cakes came from there. I swear their frosting roses tasted better than anyone else’s. Anyway, I was telling all this to the woman who helped me, even though she seemed supremely uninterested and kept giving me these looks like I should adjust my medication. What can I say? I was jacked up on caffeine from Peet’s Coffee, plus being around baked goods tends to make me overly enthusiastic.
We had 38 trick-or-treaters tonight, which means I have an extra box of full-size candy bars. That’s kind of dangerous. Here’s a shot of a couple of my favorite trick-or-treaters.

they’re so cute! I’m living vicariously through the internet re: kids in cute costumes, since we got home late-ish and had zero kids visit.

the fright attendants are super cute!!! she works at the bakery and yet she was disinterested in your frosting comments? does she want to keep her job???? 🙂

Fright attendants…. That is THE best! I’ll have to remember that for work next year.

  4. Gina says:

That is my kind of costume – a twist on something known. Happy Halloween!

That’s a great turnout! Cute fright attendants…love that idea!
We had 6 kids last night, so now we have too much candy leftover. We’ve had such a bad turnout the last couple of years, it is causing us to seriously consider withdrawing our participation in future Halloweens.

just “happened to be”? i doubt it.
it’s nice that you’ll have something to eat on the plane, though.

THAT was totally my costume too! I didn’t trick or treat, but I am eating a breakfast of leftover candy…heh.
    Have a great trip.

Halloween is a quite new holiday in Italy.
Yesterday I forgot to buy some candy and our dog tried to bite the children knocking to our door… next year I’ll be more organized!
    Very nice your blog

Our turnout was pretty small 10-12 kids. (the bowl of candy that we left out when we took our daughter trick or treating appeared to have been untouched for the hour we were gone.) It’s such a bummer. I hate that kids go to the mall for trick or treating.

Oh I **LOVE** the fright attendants – must remember that if I ever need to dress up!

love the fright attendants. that’s too cute!

  12. Kathy says:

It really was cold, wasn’t it? We all dove for warm coats before heading out to trick or treat, but my legs were still numb by the time we all got back.
    I love those costumes!

those were really creative costumes. I can see how they made the “favorites” list.
