get on the peeps bus

My friend Alice used to say “Get on the clue bus” all the time (in grade school, she went through a phase where she would say, “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” It was incessant). I am not a regular rider of the clue bus, but I sure would like a pass on the Marshmallow Peeps fun bus! As you can see, I am a proud, card-carrying member of the Peeps Fan Club:

My mother left for Japan yesterday. She went to visit her 98-year-old mother, who is not doing very well (note that last year, when we visited, she was still out in the fields pulling weeds!). She seems to be doing better, though, and now she gets up in the middle of the night to listen to the radio at full blast and/or eat an orange. She has also taken to shouting out when she wants some coffee. Apparently, she keeps yelling until someone hears her and honors her request. I have a feeling this is how my father is going to act when I get to Portland …

Wow, that brings back memories. We used to say, “Pick up the big red clue phone!”
I would like to be the kind of elderly person who sits and yells for things and has her children do her bidding. I’m sure that must get frustrating for the children, but think of it as dues you pay until it’s your turn.

Sounds like Miss Alice was reading too many of those 1970s french cut Tshirts…remember those?
Your gran sounds like a hoot (as they say in GA)! Now I’ve only been to Japan once, but I can imagine the reaction she gets from the folks. I’ll bet they run when they hear her! But hey she’s 98 and entitled.
    Good luck in the race!

Mariko–Are you a Peeps purist or a Peeps ecumenist? I saw ghost Peeps and pumpkin Peeps at our Harris-Teeter (should be Harris-Peepster this time of year) grocery store and wondered, What will Peeps fans think of these? Are they like those coffee Oreos (YECH) or like Snickers ice cream (slurp!)?
    Your blog is hooty hilarious.
