a butt warmer to welcome 2009

Hiya! Hope everyone’s holidays have been going well. I’ve kind of been on vacation, but I have been home (and wishing I were at a tropical resort), and it seems like I am getting just as little done as always. It makes very little sense.

Anyway, as some of you know, I am all about trying to make my own running gear (it’s so expensive!), but I usually screw it up. Whatever. So, I was wearing some running tights the other day, and I thought, “Hmm, my butt is kind of cold. It would be nice to have some sort of covering to keep my butt warmer.” Also, I don’t know about you, but I often feel self-conscious in tights and find myself pulling down my shirt to try to make it longer. So, the butt warmer doubles as a modesty shield.

This butt warmer is basically just an overskirt. Super simple and quick to make, and you can just throw it on over whatever. I added some side pockets for cash and ID and, you know, candy. It’s a little crazy looking, though. I had it on when I stopped by my mother’s today, and even she commented that I looked pretty insane. Yes, Peter would have had comments, too, but he was still asleep when I left the house!
Happy New Year, everyone!

i like it – kinda looks like a tennis skirt….happy new year!

  2. jiru says:

    Why not?

  3. tammie says:

    i like it.
i’ve seen runners wear WAY worse.

  4. Warm Bunny says:

I can’t stop thinking of Peter Griffin from Family Guy saying, “Butt Scratchahh…….butt scratchah!”

  5. mari says:

I love it! I saw an article in a running magazine how skirts are all the rage. I think it looks super cool!

  6. Tesia says:

But… you wear it while running? I think it doesn’t really go?
You could try making tights with insulation padding :p

  7. Tizzy says:

Yeah, I know what you mean about wanting something to wear over the tights–the skirt’s a great idea!

  8. elizabooth says:

I think it’s adorable. Why not run with a skirt on, as long as your legs have enough room. Peter would just be jealous because he wouldn’t be able to pull it off.

  9. Margot says:

I don’t know why the others don’t love it because I really like it. It seems useful, and your right, it has multi-functions and I even kind of really like the color! I say it’s a go!

  10. melissa says:

    Modesty shield…that’s hilarious!

  11. Lulu says:

Look way better than any bicycle outfit I’ve ever seen in Mill Valley!

  12. sue says:

I agree, it looks like a rather longish tennis skirt. Does it ride up when you run? Maybe a shorter length would be more in proportion?.
I think it looks cute, and I love the color.
I’m all about function over form, though.

  13. megan says:

i could always run behind you and rub your butt cheeks…the skirt probably looks less strange though.

  14. Alicia says:

It doesn’t look insane, it looks like a tennis skirt. Besides, your butt is warm. 😉

  15. Leslie says:

I think its a great idea, I bet you will see Nike come out with a design like it soon! I like it much better than the running skirts, they all seem a little to short for my liking.

  16. Seanna Lea says:

I completely understand about the expense. I am going running with a friend tomorrow and he suggested that it was going to be really cold, so I bought a single pair of the Under Armour cold weather tights. That was a decent chunk of change that I would have much rather spent on chocolate!
Of course, if I actually keeps me warm tomorrow, then I won’t complain too much about the cost!

  17. molly! says:

I love it! Happy new year!!

  18. Daisy says:

I just bought a black Nike pleated skort made out of some sort of stretchy material. It was $14.99 at the Nike Outlet. I’m going to wear it running and I’ll try it over my leggings to see how it looks. The shorts part might not sit on the tights part that well, but at -20 celsius no one really cares.
I think your skirt looks great. I love the colour!

  19. Deb says:

You know, if it keeps you warm, who cares what it looks like? That is my philosophy now that I’m old(er). I can remember wearing a zip-up sweater and ski vest as my winter coat (in below 0 temps) when I was a teenager and now I think, boy was I crazy. Happy New Year!

  20. Lydia says:

Modesty shield? I think you’ve coined a new phrase. Great idea, though. I could use one.

  21. Kay says:

I love this. The idea of it, and the actual thing. Don’t take any crap about it.

  22. carolyn says:

i adore it. no crazy to be seen.
