dump cake

I just recently learned about this baking phenomenon known as the dump cake. A couple cans of pie filling, a box of cake mix, a bit of butter, and voila–dump cake. It sounds kind of disgusting, doesn’t it, but it is actually quite delicious! The great thing about it is the recipe just cries out for adaptation, so you can be as creative as you desire.

It resembles a cobbler. A little dab of ice cream alongside it, and you will be begging for more!
Read on for the recipe …

My version is an adaptation of this recipe from recipe source.
Cherry Berry Dump Cake
1 box yellow cake mix
1 stick cold, unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
2 cans cherry pie filling (or you can just use 1 can)
1 bag frozen berry medley
Preheat oven to 350F. Place the cake mix into a bowl and cut in the butter until mixture is crumbly. Dump about half the mixture into the bottom of a 9×13 baking pan and press down gently. Bake at 350 for about 15 minutes, or until the crust is golden. Remove from the oven and dump the cans of pie filling over the crust. Spread evenly. Sprinkle the frozen berries over the filling layer. Sprinkle the remaining cake mix mixture on top. Return the pan to the oven and bake another 30-40 minutes, or until the top is lightly browned and the filling is bubbly. Don’t forget the ice cream!
Note: Many recipes just have you put the pie filling in the bottom of the pan and then just dump the cake mix over the top. I like the extra step of creating the bottom crust because you end up with a chewy gooey crust.

I saw this on that show ‘cookin in brooklyn’ on Discovery Home channel and thought it looked good (and easy)! Gotta try it for my next party! p.s. glad you made it to PDX safe and sound.

  5. Oh, come on. Even I knew about dump cake. You need to hang out with trashier people and quit reading Martha all the time.

Dump cake is an old favorite around these parts. You might also like to try Dump Salad.
    Dump Salad
1 can of sweetened condensed milk (Eagle Brand)
1 can of *berry pie filling
1 small can of crushed pineapple drained
2 large containers of Cool Whip
Pecan pieces or chopped nuts (optional)
*apple or peach does not fair as well in the freezing process – berry based pie filling is best.
Dump all ingredients together in a large bowl and mix thoroughly. (Pat yourself on the back for getting through the grueling preparation stage – hee!) Put into a freezer container and freeze. Take dump salad out of the freezer to thaw about 30 minutes before you want to eat it.
This is delicious and a great item to take to potluck dinners, because it is frozen and thaws on your way to the dinner. When taking to a potluck dinner, I normally do NOT add nuts as many people have nut allergies. It’s a great dessert treat for family gatherings too, as it thaws while you eat the main course. Also try it still mostly frozen – yum.
    Enjoy!

Whoa. This sounds like something I’d first turn my nose at but the gobble up greedily. Sounds sinfully good. Scary, but good.

Our old fashioned Dump Cake recipe is this
1 box yellow butter cake mix
    1 can cherry pis filling
1 16 oz can crushed pineapple (with the juice)
    1 stick butter
    1/2 cup finely chopped pecans
empty both cans in the botton of a greased 13×9 glass baking dish
generously sprinkle cake mix over top
    then add butter pieces
    Add chopped pecans last
Bake 350 1 hour or until brown.
I’ll try yours next time as it sounds fab.

My son loves spice cakes, so I made him a dump cake with a spice cake mix and a large can of cinnamon apple pie filling. Completely different from the cherry, but equally excellent.

mmm…I usually don’t comment on food stuff (I’m more craft oriented) but man that looks scrumptious, and I like that it’s easy…cool.

Gotta love dump cake! We make it alot while camping. Try using chocolate cake mix instead of the yellow one. Yummy!!

  18. i would use all fresh or frozen berries and skip the cans…especually if you are going to have icecream, sounds like desert tonite!

Gotta love dump cake. It is especially good with whipping cream on top. It was a favorite of mine when I was pregnant and could eat as much as I wanted.

It’s sounds like Paula Deen’s Oohey Gooey Pumpkin cakes. So good!

I was so inspired by your dump cake that I ran out and got some supplies to try one of my own. I went for chocolate cake, raspberry pie and canned pinneapple. The chocolate cake turned out like a brownie — it was delicious! I agree, forget Martha, I’m through with shunning these kind of recipes!
