sticker shock

I was looking through the new Knitty today and happened upon bpt. I thought it was cute, so I did a quick google on the yarn, Schaefer Yarn’s Marjaana, a 50% merino wool/50% silk blend. The first site I visited listed it as $54 a skein, so I figured I had come across some, I dunno, Antarctic site that had a different currency or something. I went to a different site, and again $54 per skein! This means bpt is more than $160 to knit! Aiyaaaa! If I make it, I’ll be looking for a substitute yarn, that’s for sure. Suggestions are most welcome!

Lamb’s Pride (85% wool/15% mohair) is very nice. I’ve also been ogling the gorgeous “Kersti” yarn that indigirl is using and she’s very pleased with it. Not positive if it’s worsted weight, but you have to admire the name. 😉 You’re right, that’s one pricey sweater!

I’ve spent more than $160 on yarn for a sweater (think a million colors of Rowan for a Kaffe Fassett). But I wouldn’t spend the $$ for that either…..yarn substitution is part of the *artistic process*, isn’t it??? 😉

I did the exact same thing. I saw that sweater and immediately thought I could make that for my best friend for Christmas, but then saw the price tag. “AAiiiyaaa” is right. I just made a very expensive sweater ($200 Colinette Point Five Cowl Neck – ouchies) and don’t think I can do that again for awhile. I will stay tuned to see if someone comes up with a good substitution for the yarn. I really like the styling of that jacket. I think I hear another knit along coming. 🙂

Since it’s a worsted, there should be plenty of substitutes out there. Just keep looking and something should pop up! 🙂

Hi – I love bpt too and was thinking about knitting it. I hadn’t priced out the yarn it calls for but “ouch” is right! I then thought of an ebay yarn seller that hand dyes beautiful yarn: http://www.stores.ebay.com/id=279584
I’ve bought sock yarn from her before and it’s really nice. She has worsted weight wool and a silk/wool blend.
BTW – I’ve been enjoying your site!

Ooohh that’s a cute sweater! Well spending the car payment on yarn may be feasible for some(?), but you could come up with some great subs. You could even Koolaid dye some white wool and make your own variegated…

Mountain Colors Weavers Wool might be nice, and would cut the price to $60 for the smallest size, $75 for the medium and large.

not only is it that expensive, but if i made that sweater i’d want to add at least 4 inches to the length so i’d need even MORE yarn!!! ouch!!
p.s. hey kerstin! “kersti” is the worsted weight version of “koigu” that KPPM puts out. it’s lovely!! 🙂 but about $8.95 a skein i think…
