meltdown

The big news here in Portland right now is the heat. Portlanders don’t fare well in what is locally considered to be unbearably hot temps. Friday it was 104 here, then Saturday it wasn’t as hot, but it was extremely humid. Today it wasn’t as muggy, but it was hot. Most Portlanders don’t have air conditioning, so what do we do? We go to the movies or we go to our basements or we go eat ice cream. Peter and I did all three today (but instead of ice cream we got gelato).
We have also been painting our bathrooms. I made some drastic errors in the basement bathroom and selected a color that I thought would be cheerful but instead looked murderous and was, as Peter put it, disorienting. We’re trying to fix it right now. We are very happy, however, with the paint choice for the main floor bathroom:

I don’t know if you can really see the true color. It’s basically a matcha ice cream green, which is one of my favorite greens of all time. Pratt & Lambert choose to call it “kashmir green,” but I know better. Oh, so Peter also put in a new sink and vanity (the one we got from IKEA) plus new fixtures. We still need a new floor in there, among other things, but that is a future project.
I am sweating like crazy, so if you’ll excuse me, I have to descend to the basement and make some more sleeveless tops …

That’s a cool colour! I love to see people who use colour in their homes instead of just regular white walls or standard neutrals. Man, there is a heat wave in Portland too! Where did you get gelato? It wasn’t that little Italian dessert place in Pearl was it?

I live in Texas so I’m used to heat and humidity. But there is no way I could deal with 104 degrees and no air conditioning. I hope it cools down soon. That has to be really miserable.

This is so weird, my hallway is almost the same exact color (it’s called sea of grass–really looks like that too!) I love how bright the bathroom looks!!

Hi again, haha. I was looking through you’re site, and you are very talented!! I loved the tote bags tutorial, very informative! Have you ever tried quilting?? I’ve been a quilter for two years now, and it’s so much fun!!! If you have this much talent, you’d pick it up in a snap 😀
(I’m currently making a tote bag that has pathwork squares on it, i quilt each side, and then i’m sewing the sides together, similar to your design. You gave me the inspiration! Thank you!)

Pretty, pretty color. It WAS hot as hades this weekend. I kept saying “at least it won’t be humid”…next time I’ll keep my trap shut. I hear we’ll be back to normal soon!

Weird. As I sit here I’m looking at a paint chip that’s exactly that color. I LOVE it in your bathroom with the white. So fresh and inviting. It’s very close to one of the colors I had in my old pad, so I’m still on the fence about using it again. Would that be cheating?
    Keep up the great DIY!
If it makes you feel any better, it’s been hot, hot, hot here too and we are also sans AC.

That’s one of my all-time favorite greens, too. And yeah, the heat – ugh, just ugh.

  12. Sasha says:

Should I point out that you are continuing your green theme?
    It’s very serene.

  13. WHAT IS THE MURDEROUS COLOR? I MUST KNOW. 🙂

  14. Kathy says:

My mother in law, who is staying with us for a little while, keeps saying over and over “I thought it didn’t get hot in Portland!”
Of course, can’t really complain *too* much, since it’s way hotter in other places. Good excuse to eat ice cream, though 🙂
