fuzz factor

My new serger has inspired me to finally get to some of the high-tech fabrics I’ve been hoarding. Last year I got some fuzzy green fleece at my favorite high-tech fabric store: Rose City Textiles. If you shop at a particular outdoor clothing manufacturer, you might recognize this fabric. Anyway, it’s all furry on the outside and the fleece lining has a velour-like texture. Yummy.

It’s soft and cozy and warm, but sewing with this stuff nearly sent me over the edge. When you cut it, the furry polyester nap goes flying around all over the place. It covered my sewing machines, my floors, my glasses, my clothes, EVERYTHING. Because of this, I was prompted to sew as quickly, and perhaps hastily, as possible. I pretty much made up the pattern by copying a top I already had and just going for it. The workmanship is not that great, but I didn’t care! I had to sew up those fuzzy seams! Now on to the next project …

whenever i sew furry things, it always tickles my nose and gets in my eyes, too. it sure is a pain to work with.

Hi! I stop by often, but I don’t think I’ve ever left you a comment. Here’s a great tip someone passed along to me, (after I was sewing with a “fuzzy” fleece, and thought I was going end up in the ER from inhaling all the fuzz) anyway, put some Glad Press and Seal wrap on your cut edges, it makes it glide through your machine, and really cuts down on all the fuzz flying around. The excess peels right off when you’re done. Works great!

Hey! Why aren’t there any pictures of quilts on this site? I love the green fuzzy; it’s totally you. Why is your head cut off though? You could wear this jacket to yoga.

Love the green fuzzy! It kind of reminds me of the “grass sod” suit in the Talking Heads movie “True Stories”, in a good way. A very good way. 🙂

That turned-out well despite the battle with the flying fuzz. I tried knitting with some velour-like yarns two years ago, but gave it up because of the battle of the flying fuzz, at least sewing the stuff makes it a shorter battle. Do you think the loose fuzz might jam your machine?
