a little bit of spring in the mailbox

Looky what came in the mail yesterday:
fab from mrs h.JPG
Knitting and sewing guru Mrs. H* sent me some fabric goodies. The orange stuff is cotton lycra!
I decided that I had food poisoning rather than the flu. Without going into too much detail, let’s just say that my body has been rather intent at, well, purging. I don’t wish food poisoning on anyone. It was horrible, and though I have pretty much recovered, I still have prickly tummy and am weakish.
*One of Mrs. H’s daughters is the NPR reporter Emily Harris. You may have heard her reporting from Baghdad? Well, she was also on Car Talk last week, which Peter and I thought was incredibly impressive!
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

cheesecake tasting

Last night I felt well enough to go to a friend’s house for dinner and cheesecake tasting. Her daughter is getting married in the fall, and she wants cheesecake. To cut costs, she is just going to buy a boatload of frozen cheesecakes instead of having one custom baked. Here’s the spread:
Cheescake tasting.jpg
Going clockwise from the bottom lefthand corner, there’s the New York Cheesecake from Trader Joe’s, a cappuccino mousse cake (I know, NOT cheesecake, but my friend’s husband was hungry when they went shopping and insisted they buy it), Costco frozen cheesecake, the small one from Smart & Final (billed as a restaurant supply sort of grocery), and a Sara Lee raspberry swirly thing (doesn’t it look like one of those toaster pastries?). Anyway, it was really fun tasting them all. My personal fave was the Trader Joe’s one. It had the creamiest texture, and I really like a creamy cheesecake. The Smart & Final one was horrid–rubbery and gelatinous. The Sara Lee one was a hit with some, but I thought it was sickeningly sweet. The cappuccino one looked good, but it tasted too bitter and fake. We all concluded that the best and most practical was the Costco cheesecake. It is firm but not hard, and it comes presliced. 16 slices for 10 bucks is hard to beat! So there you have it.
I guess my sweater has been doing some talking while I’ve been ill. Thanks for all your collar suggestions! I’ll be doing some experimenting and most likely will need more help!

collar me

Psssst. Hey! It’s me! bpt/blt, the work-in-progress sweater. I thought I’d drop a note while my handler is under the weather. After weeks of being manhandled by her, I’m kind of glad she has the flu. Thank goodness she is nearly finished with me. She just has to add a collar, block, and attach the zipper. She could use some serious collarly advice, though (well, that’s not ALL the advice she could use. I mean, how does someone who has knit for nearly 25 years JUST figure out that her flat gauge differs from her in-the-round gauge? A wee bit dim-witted, are we? But I digress … ).
So she wants me hoodless, but she made no accommodations for this before she began knitting (of course. Typical impulsive behavior), which has resulted in a rather wide neckline. She was hoping to do a nice little folded-over collar like Claudia did on her pumpkin spice sweater, but let’s face it, she is no Claudia, and a collar like that might look goofy on such a wide neckline. Me, I’m thinking maybe an applied i-cord edging to match the hems might be the ticket. That would mean the neckline would remain pretty open, but goodness knows she has enough scarves to last a lifetime. Anyway, please send her some advice. There’s a good chance she’ll listen to at least one of you (though there’s also a good chance she’ll screw up the advice).
Here I am:

one flu over the cuckoo’s nest

I have the flu. I spent all of yesterday in bed. We live in a small house, and I never even made it to the kitchen because I was too weak. This morning I still felt lousy, but now it is afternoon, and I am sitting upright! Like a human! I’m hoping tomorrow will be even better. Having the flu is a big, big bummer. On top of it, the weather has been gorgeous, but I have been in a darkened room, rotting in my body soil (eeewww! This blog is supposed to be appropriate for women and children, so I apologize for that graphic slip-up). There are, however, some positive points. The only one I can think of at the moment is that Peter made Jell-O for the first time in his life.

button madness

Look what Missa, Queen of Buttons, cooked up for me!

Are they not fabulous? She will make buttons for you, too! She also does web design and all sorts of other creative things.
And now for some dog content. I was at Jenny‘s very fun blog, and she mentioned that she put her pug Oscar on Dogster, the canine equivalent of Friendster. So, of course I had to put Deedle on there. Please go be her friend.

turning japanese

Thank you, Brainy Alison, for sending these delightful goodies!
japn mag.JPG
Can you tell how cute the card is? Two lovely Japanese knitting magazines, and yes, that one magazine really does say GIRLY KNIT on it. I want to knit EVERYTHING in both of these magazines! Here are some of my fave items (please excuse the photography, but I was trying to hold the mag open and take the photo at the same time):
japn mag tank.JPG japn mag sweaters.JPG
japn mag purse.JPGIt’s funny, since I don’t generally like girlie things, but how cute is that tank with the little flowers at the bottom? Ahhh, so many things to knit!
Thanks for the feedback on bpt/blt. The fabulous Becky was correct in her assessment–the cables are knit correctly; however, I knit front cables and back cables at differing tensions, and that’s why one looks fatter than the other. Lopsidedness is the story of my life. At any rate, I am not a perfectionist, so I am not too bothered. Please note, though, that if I run into any of you, and I am wearing the sweater, I don’t want any of you staring at my chest (er, rather, my cables)!

my everchanging gauge

Wow, some knitting content! I have one sleeve left to knit on bpt/blt:

You know, I think my gauge has changed drastically during the course of this sweater. Also, the cables on the front look kind of goofy, like they are completely different designs or something. It’s either that or an optical illusion. Or my eyes.
Giant thanks to all of you who have supported cancer-fighting Megan by purchasing products from the Chemo Megan shop. I got a check from CafePress the other day and was thus able to make a donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and to Megan. Megan has ONE MORE chemo session remaining. Fight the fight, people!

and the blog goes on

La la la, what shall I blog about today? Lest you all think my devotion to Peeps is but a passing fancy, may I present you with this:
peeps card.JPG
Yessir, I am a bonafide member of the Peeps Fan Club!
And you were all right. My mother meant FOOTBALL when she wrote “hoot bool.” I have a whole list of her fun spellings. Do you know what Valentine’s is? It is “romanchick.” And the little sweet breads I baked a while back? “Hot closspan.” Now I dare any of you to look at a hot cross bun ever again and not think, “Well, that’s a mighty fine looking hot closspan.”
I did get some very helpful information about the Big White Gap that results from not posting daily, and I have taken it under advisement (meaning I sent an e-mail to my brother demanding that he fix it. I could probably do it myself, but html makes me kind of dizzy). Anyway, thanks for the info, Mary and Kristin!

post or perish

I feel compelled to post on a daily basis because if I skip even ONE day, a large and unsightly gap appears just below the banner and before the most recent entry. What is up with that? I asked insane brother, the maintenance man of my blog, if he could fix it, and his reply? “No! You must blog! HAHAHAHAHA.” Sigh.
I finally gave in and ordered a ball winder. It arrived today from the boys. Super speedy service! There was a tiny little cracked piece, so right now the SuperGlue is drying on it. I can’t wait to give it a spin.
Let me conclude this dull post with some words from my mother. She discovered e-mail a couple of years ago, and now we e-mail daily. She immigrated to the US when she was in her 30s, so her English is still … colorful. I love how she spells English words. It’s clear that she has never seen these words in written form. Here’s the latest: “hoot bool.” Can you guess what she means?

disco dots

I sewed another bag today. I had been envisioning a messenger-style bag using the Disco Dots fabric, and after much time spent with my friend the seam ripper, this is what was produced:

I think it’ll be pretty functional. I guess I have a thing for polka dots …
