a cake for carolyn

pistachio cake.JPG

Carolyn sent me a recipe for a trashy pistachio cake, and I have been wanting to make it ever since. It uses cake mix and pudding mix and stuff. I like being a purist at times, but really, I grew up on Velveeta and Hamburger Helper, so boxed cakes are right up my alley (but only if they’re doctored). Anyway, I finally found the pistachio instant pudding today (does anyone else think it is really, really strange that there is pistachio pudding mix? Why that flavor? It just doesn’t seem like a FLAVOR to me), and the rest is history. Read on for the recipe …

knit in progress

I am lacking in blog fodder, so here’s a very unrepresentative, in terms of color accuracy, photo of the random, top-down pink GGH Goa cardi I am currently working on. I’m putting a cable down the back, and it is adding a kind of scary element to it. I kind of like it.

Also, I am really digging Alison‘s wavy scarf. I am thinking about making one in cotton or a cotton/acrylic blend for spring! Is that too kooky?

altoids revenge

I like Altoids, and I also like sour candy, so when I spied the Altoids sour fruit gum, I was giddy with delight and anticipation. First chew is pretty good, with a nice sour hit, but the gum goes utterly flavorless in a matter of minutes. Not good! But that’s not the worst of it…
altoids_gum_cherry.jpg
I don’t know if this stuff has an expiration date, but the other day I was chewing a couple of pieces when I was out walking Deedle, and the GUM BEGAN TO DISINTEGRATE IN MY MOUTH. I swear there was some sort of chemical breakdown of the gum, because it became kind of foamy and slimy and soft. It wasn’t even chewable anymore. It was so disgusting that I had to spit it out, but I couldn’t get it all out of my mouth! It left a film in my mouth! Then I had this spontaneously disintegrating glob on my fingers because, hello, I was out walking the DOG and did not have tissues or a garbage can handy. Anyway, be warned. Chew Altoids sour gum at your own risk.
A public service announcement brought to you by supereggplant, who does not, as far as she knows, have superhuman saliva.

the appliance zone

Hi. Today I want to talk about appliances. Lately I have been mad at our refrigerator and our stove. The fridge is loud to the point of distraction (I wonder if the fridge is why my hair is going completely white?), plus it rattles. Now, I already know that newer fridges (ours is about 5 years old) have better compressors, and I think I want one of the new French door models if/when I get a new fridge.
But the oven. Oy, it is ticking me off. When we bought our house nearly 6 years ago, it was with great joy and excitement that I shopped for an oven, the first oven I could call my own. I decided not to go bottom-of-the-barrel, but I couldn’t go high end, either (we didn’t get an interest-only loan like some people, but hey, a mortgage is a mortgage). I went for what seemed to be a good, solid Kenmore–not sexy, but reliable … NOT! Now, in all the crappy rentals I’ve lived in, I never had a problem with ovens not baking like they should, but this Kenmore? We have had to replace the temperature sensor at least once, maybe twice, and now it’s acting up again! F2 ERROR! F2 ERROR! Piece of junk!
Now, I don’t think I can get a new oven any time soon, but a girl can dream, right? I’m thinking about a separate cooktop and oven next time. The cooktop will be gas, maybe Dacor with the continuous grate system, and the oven, let’s go electric, maybe with the convection option. What about you?

run, forrest, run

I have a ton of sewing projects on my to-do list, and I managed to complete a couple of them yesterday. More running stuff!
running top pink.JPG
Pardon the jogbra’s unsightly bulkiness. The fabric is a polyester jersey sort of fabric, courtesy of Sandee in the Bay Area. As you can see, I am still wild about the flatlock! I also made another pair of exercise capris. These are made of cotton lycra, so they aren’t so great for running but are rather comfy for yoga and such. Here’s a shot of the fabric (I figured you all have seen enough of my tights-clad legs):

fruity fun

If you’re going to cross over to the dark side, you may as well do it in style.

The entire 16-piece set? $25.90 plus tax. I love it.

Short sleeve weather

Ha ha ha, a finished object!

cabley tshirt.JPG

The pattern is from one of the Japanese knitting magazines that La Brainy sent eons ago when she was living overseas (hmm, does Canada count as overseas? Ha ha). In the book the sweater is made of some mohairish yarn, but as some of you know, I have a thing about the whole hot body/cold arms conundrum. I therefore substituted with Berroco Pronto, a 50/50 cotton/acrylic yarn that I bought from elann.
As I was knitting it up, I was concerned that it was going to be too heavy (it’s fat yarn) and/or too hot. Then, as I was seaming, I noticed that the sleeves were super short, and heavens to betsy, the thing looked like a muscle T! The horror! Once I put the thing on, however, it didn’t seem so terribly muscle T-ish (does it?), and temperaturewise, it is right on the mark. Peter says this is his most favorite of all the sweaters I have knit, which I think is a little weird, but that’s okay.

Candy, what else?

rabbitsbtn.gif
I was very egg-cited to be able to participate in Operation Haremail, a chocolate bunny exchange of sorts sponsored by the lovely Tammy at Polka Dot Mittens. My bunny buddy Johanna and I hopped in under the wire and were assigned to one another. She and I got our packages on the same day. Check out the goodies she sent!

Fuzzy little bunny and treats! Here’s a closeup of those Serenade Chocolates, a chocolatier based in Brookline, MA:

And speaking of eggs, I got an incredible package from Marie today:

Let’s have a closer look at that honkin’ Kinder surprise egg, shall we? Here it is next to a bottle of wine so you can see how humongous it is:

We have a winner!

Thank you all for playing! I am flattered and quite frankly a tad frightened that so many of you would think I bought dozens and dozens of Peeps. Do I really come across as that nutty (you don’t have to answer that). Anyway, the winner is Shelby, who guessed 9 packages! Yeah, 9, kind of a letdown now, isn’t it? And I guess the question was a bit tricky, since I didn’t mention that the packages held other items besides Peeps. I wasn’t being tricky on purpose. Shelby will be getting some sort of Peepish prize. I might also send a little prize to Thuy for submitting the most outlandish guess.
Peep on, dear readers!
