blanketing the world with peep love

I promise the Peepcentric posts will die down soon, but for now, you will just have to bear with me. Anyway, I am not a collector of plushes, but I would be a liar if I told you I did not covet the new line of Peeps plushes. I resisted, and I was rewarded. Thank you, KnittyKim, for my Peep plush:

peeps plush.JPG

I am not worthy, but oh, how I love my Peeps plush. It is so deliciously soft! I find myself cupping it in the palm of my hand and petting it, peering lovingly into its chicky little eyes, rubbing it against my face! Aiyaaaaa!!!!
Okay, and now it’s time for a little contest! Check out these packages I mailed yesterday:
packages.JPG
Can you guess how many packages of Peeps are in these parcels? I just want a total, and for clarification, when I talk about a package of Peeps, I am talking about the shrinkwrapped package that contains three smaller boxes. In chick terms, I’m talking a 15-count package. For the bunnies, it’s a 16-count package. If you require further information, please go here. What’s the prize? I don’t know yet, but hopefully it won’t be too lame, and it really should be Peep themed, don’t you think? So if you’re one of those weirdos who doesn’t like Peeps, you might want to sit this one out. Let the games begin!

IMBB #13: Cupcakes!

imbb13.gif
I have long wanted to participate in one of the IMBB (Is My Blog Burning) events. For those of you unfamiliar with IMBB, it is a monthly food blog event wherein a theme is selected, and anyone who wants to participate either makes or buys or steals an edible item following this theme and blogs about it (or doesn’t. You don’t have to have a blog to play). This edition is sponsored by Maki, who has a delicious food blog.
So anyway, this time the theme is CUPCAKES, so I KNEW I wanted to join in on the fun. I have been planning to make red velvet cupcakes for a long time, so I figured this would be a perfect opportunity, but then I was foiled (or rather, I was my own foil). I forgot to buy buttermilk and cream cheese at the store, and then I kind of ran out of time. Rather than bag the whole thing, though, I decided that darnit, I am going to make some cupcakes!

imbb cupcakes.JPG

I whipped out the latest issue of Cook’s Country magazine and made the basic birthday cupcake recipe. I sorta kinda made their chocolate frosting, too. They are not the end-all and be-all of cupcakes, but I’m not pushing them away, either!
*Anecdote: I was, ahem, sampling one of the cupcakes (and yes, I was eating it over the kitchen sink) when the doorbell rang. I could see the mailman’s legs, and he kept standing there instead of dropping the mail and leaving, so I shoved the rest of the cupcake into my mouth and ran to the door. My mouth was so full of cupcake that I couldn’t even speak. Finally I was able to croak out, “Do you want a cupcake?” (and no, I don’t think I spit any chunks of cupcake onto his uniform). He did, so Dave the mailman got to sample one, too!
Read on for the recipe …

multiplying swim bags

My friend Tom commissioned me to make a couple of swim bags for him, and here’s what I made:
swim bags 1.JPG swim bags 2.JPG
I think he is going to take the two solid-colored ones, so I might put the strawberry one up for sale if anyone is interested. They are about 16″ long and 8″ tall, and I’m thinking $25? Is that too much? I am really terrible about pricing things and asking for money. People should take advantage of me, because I am a sucker.
Oh, thanks for all your kind words about the wrappy top. Before I read all your nice comments, I was blog surfing, and I saw that Becky just finished a mohair wrappy top! Hers is stunning, of course, so I was actually rather embarrassed about mine, but then I read your comments and decided that hey, we all have different styles and levels of competency, and it’s all copasetic!

pushing the fiber boundaries

Yes, I’m still knitting, and I have a finished object to prove it! It’s wrappy top #36 from the latest Rebecca (doesn’t that sound like a Westminster Dog Show announcement? “Wrappy top #36”):

wrappy top.JPG

I made some changes, which completely altered the essence of the sweater. Instead of mohair, I used TLC Cotton Plus, a 50/50 cotton/acrylic blend (it took 4 balls, so the sweater cost about $10 to make!). I wanted something more practical, and the Cotton Plus can be thrown in the wash. As you can see, though, I lose that super flowy, drapey, ethereal quality that the mohair version provides. I guess it came out kind of small, too, didn’t it? Well, whatever, I think I will probably get some use out of it. I can wear it with t-shirts and tanks in the summer, and I won’t have to worry about getting sand or mustard all over it!

fashion show fun

Yesterday I left our house just before 7am and got home at 11pm. It was a LONG day, and most of it was spent sitting in a van. It was fun, though, so I’m really glad I went. The ladies were great. I kind of figured they would be interesting and artistic and all, but I had no idea they would be as accomplished and multi-faceted as they were. One woman is a mural painter, color consultant, quilter, wearable art aficionado, calligrapher, and belly dancer! Another woman used to live in Portland, and it turns out her son and I were in the same graduating class in high school!
Anyway, our first stop was M&L Fabrics in Anaheim/Buena Park (I didn’t really know where we were). It looks like a rundown warehouse, but once you enter, there is fabric EVERYWHERE. Here are a couple of photos I snuck:
bfs m and l.JPG
One section of the store.
bfs m and l flatfolds.JPG
They had rows and rows of these flatfolds. I think most of them were about $1.68 a yard or something ridiculous.
We only had about 30 minutes in the store. I picked up a few small pieces for making bags or pouches or other goodies:
bfs fabs.JPG
After the fabric store we headed to Knott’s Berry Farm. Kind of a crazy place to have a fashion show, but whatever. The Bernina Fashion Show took place in a nicely designed auditorium. You can’t see much from this photo, but it might give you a feel for what the show was like:
bfs.JPG
It was an actual fashion show, complete with techno music playing in the background, over-the-top narration, and models doing those “vogue” kind of poses (I almost laughed out loud when the first model came out doing that in a wedding gown). I fell asleep during the middle (it was so cozy and dark in there). Some of the garments were truly incredible, and it made me tired just thinking about all the detail work involved. There was one coat that apparently took the equivalent of 3 months of full-time work hours just to embroider! Yikes! Anyway, I have a new appreciation for this world of wearable art. It’s not all quilted, asymmetrical jackets anymore!
One final thing–on the way back up the coast, we stopped in Santa Barbara to have dinner. We ate outside (OUTSIDE, people) at the Paradise Cafe, and it was divine.

sushi dreams

My mother’s birthday is Sunday (the first day of spring!), so I made her a little sushi outfit.
mom sushi outfit.JPG
The bottoms are pajama bottoms, but the top is a regular T-shirt. I hope it doesn’t confuse her to have mixed category clothing. Here’s a closer look at the shirt:
mom sushi shirt.JPG
The fabric is 100% knit fabric by munki munki. I ordered it from Sewzanne’s Fabrics.
I am making molasses spice cookies right now for the van of wearable art ladies. This should be an adventure tomorrow!

peepin’ lucky

I consider myself to have average luck. I’m not spectacularly or even particularly lucky, but I’m not terribly unlucky, either. Average luck. Today, though, I feel very, very, super duper lucky, because look what I got in the mail:
peep package.JPG
A lovely package from Amy! Some little goodies, including a miniature hamburger set. Here’s the piece de resistance:

PEEP EARRINGS!!! Can you believe it? She’s not selling these, but you can buy other amazing goodies (sushi and sweets) from her online store, amyville.

blabla

I have become rather fixated on blabla pillows and softies. There are so many clever crafters out there making cute little softies and things, but I am just not good at that sort of thing. I can’t seem to do the cute embroidery thing, either. So, I guess I will just have to covet and shop. Here are Violet and Peter (yes, it’s named Peter. Think I should get it?) from the blabla people:
blabla violet.jpg blabla peter.jpg
Not much else exciting going on around here. Yesterday I got a migraine, and I had to drive home (30 minutes!!). I was very worried that I was going to throw up on myself. I was even trying to figure out how I could get the window down and lean out to throw up, but I thought I’d probably crash into something.
So this weekend I am heading to LA with a vanful of women I’ve never met to attend the Bernina Fashion Show, which is some sort of wearable art show (I know, I am very daring). Anyone out there going? Anyone?

tie one on

In case you’re wondering, I am still knitting. I’m trying to finish up the wrappy top from the latest Rebecca. I thought I was undergoing torture last week when I knit the tie:
wrappy tie.JPG
It just went on and on and on and on, and as you can see, it is longer than two Nerds Ropes! Unfortunately, it must be frogged. The pattern says to knit these ties then stretch one end to fit the front edge. Well, this will not stretch that much. I am now thinking I will pick up stitches along the front edge and decrease to create a normal-sized tie. We’ll see if the plan works.

green tea delight

Yesterday I got a phone call from the post office. They said they had an express package for me, and I could either pick it up or just wait to have it delivered on Monday. Hmm, express package? I figured it was probably work-related or just some marketing scam. I asked who it was from, and when they told me, I ran out the door and jumped in the car. Look what it was!

molly package.JPG

Gobs of matcha goodies, courtesy of Molly in Japan. So far I’ve tried the chewy milky candies coated with matcha powder (super yum!) and the matcha Pocky. Now you knitters out there probably spotted that little non-candy-related item. It’s a mini pompom maker!
molly pompom maker.JPG molly pompoms.JPG
It only took me a couple of minutes to whip up those little pompoms! These pompom makers are the coolest little gizmos! Much easier than winding around and around a plastic donut (Susan Bates pompom maker! Grrrrr). Now I’m afraid I have to list pompoms on my current list of fixations (along with zippers and webbing).
