zippery doo da!

The obsession with zippers continues. Check out the bouquet of zips that arrived the other day!

I will not hoard the zippers or the webbing. I will not hoard the zippers or the webbing.
Hey, thanks for all the advice on the glasses. I took them back today. I suppose I should have mentioned that I have a bit of a glasses curse. Every time I get new glasses, I have some sort of problem (it’s probably psychological). Anyway, these new frames sit a bit lower on my face than would be ideal, so I had a sneaking suspicion they weren’t centered. Well, they weren’t! I don’t know why opticians don’t first adjust the glasses to your head then mark the pupil position with a felt pen. What is with the big Viewmaster-like pupil distance measuring contraption? And they don’t adjust the glasses until afterwards! That seems wrong. I want some ice cream now. Heh.

double your pleasure

I just got new glasses today, and I can’t see very well. I haven’t decided if it’s because I need to get used to the new prescription or if it’s because the lenses aren’t centered properly. Any suggestions?
Well, anyway, I meant to talk about these Chocolate Chip Brownie Double Decker Cookies. You get the best of both worlds!

Peter took them to school, since it was the English Department’s turn to bring faculty snacks (and he’s an English teacher, in case you didn’t know). I overbaked them a bit, but they were still tasty. Next time I will watch the timer carefully. If they are slightly underbaked, they’d be chewier and fudgier. Yummmmm. You can find the recipe here.
And by the way, I am now seriously addicted to Tim Tams (though the mint cookies and the Milo Energy Bar and all the other things were really tasty, too). I discovered that you CAN acquire them in North America:

just can’t get enough

Ha ha ha ha, I made another wristlet thingy!

This is a mini version. It’s rather japonesque, non? I put the Mr. Donut mug in there for scale. Here’s the lining:

gisbe

I recently participated in the GISBE–the Great International Secret Blog Exchange, hosted by Vivi and Tracey. It was a lot of fun. I sent my package to Katia, an Aussie living in France, and I received my killer package from Deeleea in Australia!

gisbe box.JPG

I mentioned that I was, um, interested in local foodstuffs (the understatement of the year), and as you can see, Deeleea took this to heart. Those Tim Tams*? Incredible! And the chips (or crisps, if you prefer) were delicious, too. I am enjoying every bite!
*Peter thinks the Tim Tams would be good frozen! Think I should try it?

wristicuffs

So Carolyn was harassing me asking me about making a little wristlet for her after she saw the super cute ones that Hillary and thimble made. Since I am so efficient (you can tell when I’m being sarcastic, can’t you?), I got right on it and came up with this:

And here’s the interior, designed to help Carolyn get ready for summer:

Doh! Exoskinned!

After much laboring, I managed to finish my exoskin* jacket!

exoskin jacket.JPG

And here’s a closeup of the pocket:
exoskin pocket.JPG
Yeah, some of us dig orange pockets.
In general, though this wouldn’t even sell at a seconds sale but for all the blatant flaws, I’m pretty happy with it! I essentially made up the pattern, using various jackets and vests as guides. Now, my spatial skills are lacking (ask Peter. He will confirm this), but I do what I can. The pockets nearly did me in, but they turned out. And you can’t really tell from the photos, but that silverish piping is that reflective tape. Very outdoorsy, huh?
But working on that exoskin was very difficult. It is rubbery on one side, so the sewing machine does NOT like it. It just sticks to it. I couldn’t find any teflon tape around here, but I was/am too impatient to wait for my order to arrive, so I employed the tissue paper method, wherein I sandwich the exoskin between sheets of tissue paper. If anyone ever wants to torture me, just sit me down and tell me to get all the little bits of tissue paper out of stitches. Argh! You also can’t see what you’re sewing through the tissue paper (at one point I only had dark blue tissue paper). The walking foot helped somewhat, but it gave up when I tried to hem the jacket by folding up the bottom to stitch it down. I eventually had to rip that out and sew a Goretex band to the bottom then turn it up to hem.
I’m a little afraid the jacket is going to just fall apart, since the stitches kind of look like the bobbin thread didn’t really catch all the way. I don’t know what that was about. Also, it FINALLY stopped raining here, and it’s now in the 70s, so it’s a bit too warm for the jacket, but I reckon it’ll cool down before it gets into the 100s! I’d like a chance to wear it before it disintegrates.
*The exoskin was purchased from Rose City Textiles. Exoskin is used for water sports–it’s water resistant and rubbery on one side and fleecy on the other.

redemption cookies

We apologize for the recent technical difficulties. I know they can be annoying.
After the pound cake fiasco last week, I decided I should get back on the baking horse and attempt to redeem myself. I decided to try out the Thick and Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies from Cook’s Illustrated, because, well, how can you screw up chocolate chip cookies, right? Now, I already have some tried and true chocolate chip cookie recipes, but I’ve been wanting to try this Cook’s recipe for a while. They are giant cookies, and they are chewy. Who could ask for more?

peepalicious lips

I usually don’t post during the day, but I was just TOO EGG-cited not to. Look at what those people at Lipmedic have in stock!

peeps_strawberry_tn.jpg

It’s Peeps lip balm in four different flavors! You can find them here. I have to say I’m kind of grossed out by the idea–super sweet lip balm? But I am also very intrigued. Yes, very much so.

happy peep-er

My brother was doing something to my blog, or something weird happened with his computer, so that’s why things were wonky around here. His computer also ate the last post about the dead pound cake. Oh well. The dead pound cake post is back from the dead!
Anyway, for my Japanese lesson today, I took my “teachers” (the two Japanese exchange students) to Target. I learned how to say “garbage bag” in Japanese. I also had to tone down my excitement when I spotted the wall o’ Peep paraphernalia. I just got these two items:

The pen is squishy! And the chocolate egg, in case you can’t tell, contains a RED Peep.

Resurrected entry.

There’s not much going on here at Chez Eggplant, so I’m afraid I have no exciting news or discoveries to share. Today I tried to make a pound cake, but I had some problems. I followed the recipe exactly (it was from Cook’s Illustrated, too!), but something went awry during the beating together of the egg mixture and the whipped butter, and I got a curdly concoction. I baked it anyway, and it came out like a flat brick:

Also, does anyone know where I can get adhesive-backed Teflon strips? The kind you can stick to the underside of presser feet so they will glide effortlessly over fabric? I called all around this area with no luck, and I only found one source online.
