webby goodness

Some of you ask–the super eggplant, what will she do with all the webbing? She will make bags. Yes, indeed, she will make bags.

You can’t really tell, but that little doohickey in the corner is a cake. It is one square from a ribbon that features cakes!

what a tangled web

In case you haven’t noticed, I tend to get fixated on particular categories and/or items for short spurts of time. I am currently obsessed with webbing and zippers. Check out the great webbing I amassed just recently!
webbing.JPG
I got the bottom two on ebay, and the great polka dotted webbing I originally saw on Krissy’s blog. She was kind enough to send me some (perhaps my desperation was palpable even via e-mail?). Now I just have to be careful not to hoard the webbing. Must. Use. Webbing. No. Hoarding. Allowed.

rice is nice

Last night I had dinner with my friends the Slabs. They used to live around here, but then they up and moved to Portland. Whenever they come down to visit (they have family here), they ask if they can pony express anything for me. I always have them bring me a big bag of rice. You see, Japanese people can be a little fixated on their rice. My mother, who works at a little Japanese market, believes that Califoria rice is better than rice grown in Japan. And it’s not just ANY California rice. It has to be grown by Koda Farms in Dos Palos, CA. They produce a limited amount of rice and sell it through the Kokuho Rose brand. I remember a couple years when the market had to have a lottery system when the rice came in. People were LINED UP outside to get their Koda Farms rice! Anyway, I am not that picky about rice, but it sure is nice when a 20-lb bag of Koda Farms rice shows up on my doorstep!

By the way, you CAN get this rice in California. In fact, I bought a bag in San Jose last year.

more green tea fun

I thought I’d make some green tea/matcha cookies to give to the two Japanese high school exchange students who are graciously serving as my conversation teachers. I used the recipe in the Martha Stewart Holiday Cookies magazine from 2001. These were pretty simple to make, though all that chilling time is not good for impatient types like me.

The girls gobbled them up, which was very satisfying! Read on for the recipe …

the glass is half full

You know, one good thing about the postal service taking a holiday off is that you get twice as much mail the next day!

One thing the mailman brought was a surprise box of Hauser Chocolates, courtesy of Sarah (I sent her one of the “blog this book” books).

ground control to major tom

Deedle has a new spacesuit raincoat!

And an action shot:

d exoskin outside.JPG

The first raincoat I made her turned out pretty well, but I discovered after using it that making the body out of lycra was not a great idea. It kept her chest from getting muddy, but the lycra isn’t water resistant, so it would get soaked, and her chest would get wet. I decided that she needed a more water repellant fabric against her torso, so I got some exoskin. It’s rubbery on one side and fleecy on the other, and it’s made for water sports. It is kind of thick stuff, so it isn’t the easiest material with which to work. Also, it doesn’t allow full range of motion, so it kind of impedes Deedle’s gait (it would have helped if I had gotten the placement of the leg holes on target). Still, it does keep her chest dry and warm! I ordered the exoskin and the orange Goretex from Rose City Textiles. Super fast service!
By the way, after I took the photos, I fixed the gap in the neck by adding darts.

sunshine yellow

It has been rainy and grey here, but our bathroom is now sunny and cheerful!

Yeah, it’s only taken us a couple of years to finally paint the bathroom. The walls were a sea blue color before, but Peter didn’t like the blue against the yellow linoleum floor (I kind of liked it, but then, I kind of like contrasty colors together. ARE YOU SURPRISED?), so this time we went with a bright yellow to go with the floor. The paint is from Devine Color. They have great, “wearable” colors, and you can order little sample packets!

nuttin’ much

I got another package of fabric the other day, one from Rose City Textiles, but I was too embarrassed to tell you. Now I have many things to sew, and it’s kind of stressing me out. Today I had planned to have a marathon session of cutting out patterns and fabric, but I only cut out one thing! Grrr. Here’s my to-sew list:
– another raincoat for Deedle, this one with a silver exoskin body
– more swim bags
– an exoskin jacket
– more exerskirts
– the munki munki car/trench coat thingy
– dish soap aprons
– tons of other things that I haven’t put on a list yet
Remember my declaration to clothe all the dish soap bottles in the land? Well, I’ve only made ONE since then. I confess that once I’ve made something, I like to move on. I know I should try to fix and perfect things, but I always want to just go on to the next challenge! I must try to stop being so flighty and flitty.

aprons galore

It was a good mail day today. I got my allergy meds from New Zealand, the Hancock’s of Paducah fabric catalog, and a little surprise from Jennifer!

Hmm, what a pretty little packet this is! Click on the photo to see how things unfold …
Yes, it’s a Brazilian apron (well, I don’t know if it’s a BRAZILIAN apron, but a Brazilian person made it). Isn’t it so clever? The apron folds into this neat little pocket!

swim bag central

Sometimes I act impulsively:

I had this idea that I was going to make a bunch of swim bags like the one I made for Peter. I suppose now I can. I ordered these fabrics from Seattle Fabrics.
And a heads up y’all: Go listen to Marie‘s podcast here. She has a gorgeous voice and a killer accent, of course. In the first podcast Marie talks to some knitters who find inspiration for their knitting from bacteria. The next podcast will feature the one and only Wendy of Wendyknits. The podcast is a great idea, so please go show Marie your support!
