woolly mammoth clown

Dudes! I finished my candy-colored clown sweater over the weekend.

clown sweater.JPG

It is really fuzzy and very, very toasty. I got the yarn (Sorbet) and the pattern at Artfibers back in July! The armholes came out rather snug, and the collar is kind of funky (perhaps as a result of the snug armholes), but I think it’s workable enough (this is the type of rationalization you hear from someone who is way too lazy and future oriented to fix or redo anything). This was my first time doing those knit-in pocket dealies, which was fun.
Okay, hope everyone had a nice Valentine’s Day. I made red Jell-O to celebrate. Gotta go watch the Westminster Dog Show now. Go hounds!

all about cupcakes

I’ve had cupcakes on the brain for quite some time now. I mean, what’s not to like about a cupcake? I have a stack of cupcake recipes to try out, including several from this book that fell into my amazon cart the other day:

cupcake book.JPG

Instead of making any from Hey There, Cupcake or trying the chocolate cupcake recipe in the latest Cook’s Illustrated, I decided to give the Chocolate Cupcakes with Whipped Chocolate Icing from Donna Hay magazine (issue 17) a try. Here’s how they turned out:
donna hay cupcakes.JPG

The batter was really thick, so I was worried they were going to come out like rocks. They weren’t too hard, but they did firm up rather quickly, and I prefer a moister, mushier cupcake. The recipe uses a bit of almond meal, which lent a slight nutty flavor to them. The icing is enough to clog the best arteries in town. White chocolate, butter, and whipping cream. Yowza. It’s a great icing if you really, really like white chocolate, but man, it’s rich!

swatch me, baby, one more time

I need buttons for my clown sweater, and then it’s finished. This means I am currently trying to plan the next project! Last night I did some swatching:

swatches.JPG

Unfortunately, I have to reswatch tonight, since I am not on gauge. Fortunately, the Pronto (the green) and the GGH Goa (the hot pink) are the same gauge and the same weight, so if I’m feeling lazy, which I no doubt will, I only really have to swatch one of them.
I will probably knit the Japanese cabley T-shirt first (with the Pronto). The Goa is going to be, hmmm, maybe a casual zip cardi? Lately all my cardis have been short in the armholes, which means I can only wear snug shirts underneath them, and that’s not very practical. The pinky purply stuff is Rowan Handknit Cotton DK. The amazing Kay sent me enough to make that stripey T (which is why the T will be called the Super Kay T or something like that).
Another thing I’m thinking about knitting is this:
rebecca sweater possibility.JPG
It’s about the only thing in the newest Rebecca that I remotely like (what’s with all the weird, holey stuff? Isn’t all that nipple action so 2004?), and what’s odd is it’s not really me. Still, I find myself drawn to it. The problem is I don’t want to make it in mohair (it calls for GGH Soft Kid). If I ever wear this, it would be in the summer as a wrappy thing on cool mornings or evenings, and the last thing I want touching my skin is mohair or wool. Does anyone have any suggestions for substitutions? I’m worried that making it with cotton would make it too stiff.
Are you still reading? Curious about the lovely mug in the photo? It says, “Manolo says, the fashion mania for the poncho, it is now over.” Carolyn sent it to me. She is the one who introduced me to Manolo’s Shoe Blog. It is really funny (even though I still think some ponchos are cute).

don’t stop ’til you get enough

I’ve been trying not to add to my fabric stash, but I just can’t seem to help myself sometimes! Mrs. H told me about an online store called Sewzanne’s that has a nice selection of munki munki fabrics, so I couldn’t resist a peek. Here’s what came from them:

munki munki.JPG

The sushi fabric is 100% cotton knit! It’s really hard to find decent and/or fun cotton knits. This is slated to become, I don’t know, pajama bottoms and maybe a cute little t-shirt for my mother. The dotted poplin is going to be used for the lining of a trench/car coat I’m planning to make. The outer fabric is going to be the munki munki ice cream truck fabric (which I ordered several days before I placed this order, and it still hasn’t come! Hurry, reprodepotfabric!)

on the horizon

Well, looks like I have found new homes for the books I had available. Anna and Cathy, please e-mail me your mailing addresses so I can send the books! Gaile just got her books up, so go check them out if you’re in need of new reading.
I am just about finished with this:

So it’s a good thing that this arrived from elann:

It’s the Berocco Pronto in spring green. The color in the photo is totally off, but I guess that’s what happens when you neglect to take the plastic wrapping off. I’m planning to make this with the Pronto:

On the left, that short-sleeved cabley number. This is from another Japanese knitting magazine. We’ll see how it all flies!

Blog This Book

Update: All three books have been taken! Thanks for playing!
Gaile had a great idea about passing along books you no longer want/need, and this is how Blog This Book was born. The idea, I believe, is you post some books you want to unleash, interested parties leave comments and titles of books they have to swap in return, and voila, new reading for all! Here is what I have to offer today:
BOOK tt wife.gif
The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Most people adored this book, but I was not among them.
BOOK bee.gif
Bee Season by Myla Goldberg. Pretty entertaining, good voice, I can’t say more without giving too much away.
BOOK whiteteeth.gif
White Teeth by Zadie Smith. I thought I was going to really like this book, but I just couldn’t get into it, for some reason. Maybe I am too old.
So, if you are interested in any of these books, leave a comment! If you have books you’d like to swap in exchange for any of these titles, please let me know; otherwise, I’m happy to just pass along the books for nuttin’ in return. Also check out Gaile’s site for more offers.

does not compute

I would like to ask you all for some computer advice*, but first I want to tell you about a new blog in town: Be*mused. Jan is an amazing quilter and the mother of the amazing knitter Molly, who is spending the year in Japan and thus has access to all sorts of green tea items. I won’t tell you how long it took me to figure out their relationship, because then you would all know just what an idiot I really am.
So, I am thinking I should probably upgrade my computer this year. It is 3 years old and is hanging in there, but when the DSL repair guy called it a “dinosaur,” it got me thinking. It’s a 700 mhz PC. The brand name rhymes with “smell.” Now, I don’t want to get another Smell for personal reasons (BLUE RULES), but I do want something that is reliable and comes with good support, since I am not very technologically adept. Yes, I would love to switch to a Mac, but I don’t think that is feasible. I use Microsoft Access ALL the time, and it isn’t available for the Mac. Besides, switching all my software would cost a small fortune. SO, if you have a minute, please tell me about your computer and what you like or don’t like about it. Merci!
*Your moisturizer advice was great. I got some of the Aveeno radiant moisturizer, and I am loving it!

green tea muffins

I go in waves of being fixated on things that are green tea flavored. Last week I started thinking about green tea again, and I was also thinking about cupcakes, so I decided to hunt down a recipe for green tea muffins. I managed to find this one (it’s at the bottom of the page), and it seemed pretty straightforward, so I gave it a go. Look how pretty!
green tea muffins.JPG
I will confess I was a tad skeptical. Green tea ice cream is one thing, but green tea muffins? Would they taste good? Would they taste like green tea? They are actually quite nice, and the green tea flavor is subtle but definitely there.
Read on for the recipe with conversions …

new candy!

Sometimes it pays to go out into the world:

junior caramels.JPG

I like caramel, but I have to say it isn’t my first choice in terms of candy. Still, I couldn’t resist these. They taste like how a Milk Dud might taste if it were soft (your fillings are safe with the Junior Caramels).
Oh, and for you dish soap apron fans who don’t want to wait until I figure out how to post a pattern: Reader Mary sent this link! It’s not exactly the same but pretty close. Just shorten the hem a bit, and you’ll be set! Don’t let your bottle go naked another day!
