the third time’s the charm

Do I win the record for the slowest bucket o’ chic knitter ever? After knitting the brim twice with great failure, I took Rose’s suggestion and knit it in garter stitch. I bound off using K1, P1 bindoff. Guess what? NO ROLLING, and I didn’t even have to block it! I was feeling confident as I started on the top of the candy-colored bucket, but I ripped that out twice, too. The hat is very comfy and warm, but Peter was right–it is big and puffy!

Mailman Dave (did I ever mention how I called him Ed for about a year? He never said anything, either) brought me a little package today:

I was bad and ordered some yarn from elann (and yes, ThreadBear, I feel like a total traitor!). I got some of the Stahl Big Oddballs. It’s superwash wool. Easy care. Like that. I think I’m going to make bpt from knitty but without the hood, and I’m going to call it blt because that is easier to remember.
Hey, everyone go check out Melissa’s amazing scarves she knit for the holiday bazaar at Posie in Portland on Sunday! If you live in Portland (or even if you don’t–Sharlyn is driving down from Seattle to attend), you should go!

Your hat is Scrumpdiddleyumptious! So perfect with that hoodie!
You can wear it when you eat your homemade marshmallows! Now that would be big AND puffy…

  2. Rose says:

*clap, clap, clap* Fabulous Mariko! I love your BOC! I still haven’t made mine… It fell by the wayside when I realized I have a gazillion gifts to make! Diva’s red mohair one is one of her Xmas gifts and she loves it so much, I just let her have it early. She knows she’s a diva when she wears it!
My hubby has decided to give everyone at his work Fran’s… Yummy! Bravo dear! Now send some my way…. 😉

  3. Becky says:

[Applauds madly] You did it! And you are LOOKING SPIFFY in that adorable hat! I knew your persistance would pay off. You deserve a prize now 🙂

  5. Kerstin says:

Your BoC is hands-down my fave. I just may have to be a Mariko wannabe. 🙂 It would look fun with my new pink coat AND hoodie. (There are now a couple of bloggers sporting red Target hoodies as well. It’s contagious!)

  6. kerrie says:

Now that is the most gorgeous big poofy hat I’ve ever seen. Well done for finally winning the rolling battle, I love the way it turned out. Great job..

The hat is fab, and you look gorgeous in the hat/hoodie combo. Good for you for showing the brim who’s boss! I love the color of the Stahl yarn, too.

  12. Amy says:

Bucket + Basenji = A Very Cute Picture! Love how the Fuzzy Bucket turned out. I’ll take another crack at one now that you’ve puzzled out the rolling brim problem!

  13. Rob says:

Awesome hat, Mariko! (see, I’m 90s with awesome and everyone else is 00s with fab….LOL).
Never feel like a traitor—we buy yarn from folks other than ourselves, ya know. And a good deal is a good deal–I recently helped a custo-friend of ours use our computer to buy yarn from elann for her son’s sweater (yarn I could order and get for her). A bargain is a bargain!

  14. Sandy says:

    Lovely, spunky hat! *grins*
I can’t wait to see your progress if you attempt the bpt without the hood — I’ve had thoughts of doing a similar change to that pattern, since that hood just doesn’t do it for me, but the rest is beautiful. I’m interested to see how it turns out! Good luck!

  15. Silvia says:

I’m weeping at the beauty of the hat! Tell hub that the hat is “fluffy”; “Puffy” is a racanteur in NYC…(Or as my Filipina friend who named her kitty Fluffy…”Pluppy” is how it came out…lol! Yes, she’s a funny gal…)
GREAT JOB!!! Worth the wait. Definitely.

  16. Beverly says:

My apologies up front because I’m sure that you’ve given this info. before but could you please tell me what yarn/yarns you used for your hat? I’m in love with it!

  17. Susan says:

LOVE your bucket!!! What an excellent snap too!

  18. Jeanine says:

That BOC is FABULOUSLY FUNKY! It rocks (:-)

  19. Laurin says:

I LOVE the hat. Pink is such a spiffy colour.
    Congratulations, your persistance paid off!

  20. Marie says:

Your BOC looks perfect…really, really pretty! May I ask what size needles you used with the two yarns held together? I tried one with Lamb’s Pride and an unknown mohair but I didn’t go up on the needles and the knitting was sooo tight that I had to give up on it. If you used a larger needle, did you change the size that you made? Sorry for all the questions but I want a furry Bucket too! Whaaaa! Thank you!

  21. Libby says:

Love your bucket. I want to make one so badly, but I’m trying to finish projects in progress before adding new ones. So tough.
By the way, I called my next door neighbor Lennie for about a year before my husband told me his name was Les. You’d think my husband would have caught on to me referring to him by the wrong name before a year had passed, but…
He was more of a Lennie than a Les anyhow.
