swift basenjis

No knitting progress to report. Being a tour guide is tiring. It’s much better to lie prone on my mother’s bed and watch the humongous TV that sits two feet away!
Yesterday morning I dragged insane brother out to the Basenji National Convention that just HAPPENS to be happening this week. We saw more basenjis than I have ever seen. They were having lure coursing trials where basenjis chase “rabbits” around a course. All the basenjis were so excited they were screaming. Really. THE SCREAMING OF THE LAMBS. Whoops, sorry, I got a little carried away. Here are a couple at the starting gate:

Another fun thing was riding back to my parents’ house in my brother’s convertible with the TOP DOWN. Yup, the weather in Portland is gorgeous right now.
My parents live across the street from an elementary school. For some years now, a particular type of bird known as a swift has come to gang up before heading south. They come in September and reside inside the school’s chimney before their journey. Every evening they begin to gather near the chimney, and just when it’s about to turn dark, they swirl in tornado-like fashion and fly into the chimney. It is a truly amazing sight, and people come from all over with their lawn chairs and picnic dinners to sit and watch. I tried to get photos, but they came out too dark. Here is a before photo, though:

Can you see any birds? By the way, to the right in the photo you can catch a glimpse of Mt. Saint Helens. Oh, and you can see part of loony brother’s car, too.

I’m in Portland!

So I am here. The teeny airport in San Luis Obispo was totally funny. The guy who checked me in was the same guy who then manned the security counter (where they made me take off my shoes and then wanded every part of my body!) and then took our boarding passes. I swear I saw something like that in a movie once.
Okay, why is airport food so expensive? I bought a sandwich at SFO, and it cost $6.50. I ate the whole thing just to spite them.
I get to my parents’ house, and my insane brother and my mother both hassle me about my eyebrows. They say they are too thin. They’ve been the same thinness for several years now, but you know, I’m getting older, so maybe they are thinning naturally? I really am not a compulsive plucker …

off to the city of roses

Well, I take off Tuesday evening for Portland! I just printed out the travel advisory sheet that says knitting needles ARE allowed in case I get hassled by some overzealous airport security person.
I started doing a single crochet on the neckline of the Becky Wannabe sweater, but then I frogged it because it was too loose in some parts and too tight in others. I’ll try again tonight. I think it will look okay and will help flatten out the back neckline and the front (one side of the front is sort of curling).
I’ll be blogging from Portland (I have to drive around a van full of Japanese visitors. That should provide plenty of bloggin’ material, though none of it will probably concern knitting).

block head

Accepting the fact that I am not going to finish the Becky Wannabe sweater before I leave for Portland, I decided to block the body and sew up the seams so that at least one portion will be ready. I’ll take the sleeves with me and hopefully finish it up north. I tried Bonne Marie’s blocking method by rolling up the pieces in a spun dry towel, but I’m wondering if my highly efficient frontload washer didn’t spin it TOO dry.

I’m stuck on what to do with the neck. The neckline is pretty neato, but the back neck is not looking very good. The pattern called for a bind-off, so I did a regular old bind-off, and it looks it:

It sort of flares out and looks funky. Should I do a single crochet? I don’t want it to change the look of the front very much.

marinara techno tard

Today I made a big batch of marinara, recipe courtesy of the Hedster. It requires two giant cans of tomatoes.

Here’s what it looks like before it starts cooking:

And how it looks about 5 hours later:

It’s been a roller coaster of technical chaos today. I spent about 2.5 hours on the phone with Microsoft (an hour of that was on HOLD) trying to figure out why the file transfer wizard wasn’t working. I am learning quickly that those XP Wizards are the reject wizards who got kicked out of Hogwarts. I was feeling pretty hopeful, though, because I managed to get my laptop and my desktop to “see” one another. Unfortunately, they don’t want to talk to one another, and I can’t share files. I am also having trouble burning CDs on my desktop. Working on the computer is cutting into my knitting time (I’m pretty sure I’m not going to finish the Becky Wannabe sweater before my trip), and I still haven’t loaded any software. I think I’m just going to have to pay someone to come fix the beasts …

sticker shock

I was looking through the new Knitty today and happened upon bpt. I thought it was cute, so I did a quick google on the yarn, Schaefer Yarn’s Marjaana, a 50% merino wool/50% silk blend. The first site I visited listed it as $54 a skein, so I figured I had come across some, I dunno, Antarctic site that had a different currency or something. I went to a different site, and again $54 per skein! This means bpt is more than $160 to knit! Aiyaaaa! If I make it, I’ll be looking for a substitute yarn, that’s for sure. Suggestions are most welcome!

button pusher

Looky what I made!

Yup, my very first button! I slapped it together in Paint, and the eggplant was served by Crazy Daisy Kerstin. What do you think?
Just found out from Melissa’s blog that a brand new yarn store is opening in Portland when I’m there! It sounds like it will be a really nice store (hopefully not too cool for school, though), so I’m hoping to check it out.

power up

I’m thinking maybe Dell isn’t so evil after all. As promised, the repair guy called this morning and came by to fix my dead power supply. When I first bought a PC, I was very torn up inside–my brother and many of my friends are militant Mac folks–but a PC was necessary for my work. If you’re going to cross over to the dark side, maybe Dell is the way to go?

Oh! I need advice! I’m leaving next Tuesday for Portland, and I’m taking my laptop. However, I do not currently own a laptop bag/sleeve. I was planning to make my own, since I don’t want to pay $$ for something I’m only going to use once or twice, but I don’t know if I’m going to have time to make it (plus I have to design it, and that always severely taxes my brain). Should I just try to make it, or should I just pay $50 for this booq bag? Please bear in mind that I have to install all that software onto my now-hopefully-fixed desktop, and that takes a lot of time.

Yeah, yeah, I’m still knitting

It’s a poncho! It’s a sandwich board! No, it is zee front of zee Becky Wannabe sweater!

I had Peter take the photo, and he commented, “Those Peeps do not complement the colors in the sweater.” Peep off, buster! Peeps go with everything!
I forgot to mention that within red wine vinegar circles, people are very snobby and territorial about their MOTHER. My husband happened to run into some man who makes his own red wine vinegar just after I learned how to make it, and the first question out of that man’s mouth? “Where’s your mother from?” Yeah, I thought it was a little personal, too. Hee hee. Anyway, my mother was smuggled into the US from Switzerland about 15 years ago. It was originally made from sangiovese.

red, red wine … vinegar!

In January I learned how to make red wine vinegar. Basically, you need red wine, a mother (a gelatinous, placenta-like glob that the wine feeds off of or vice versa, I can’t remember), and a large container. Today I bottled my very first batch! It’s been sitting in the corner of a cupboard for 9 months. Here’s what it looked like:

The mother grew A LOT. It’s kind of scary. Here’s the mother:

And the results of my labors (yeah, I know, one and a half measly bottles! But please note the lovely LABELS. Hee hee):
