bolero

Hey! I finally finished the bolero thing!

bolero.JPG

It actually turned out better than I had imagined. Those miles and miles of edging are in the past now. The pattern is from the summer 2005 Vogue Knitting, and I substituted KnitPicks Shine for the silk stuff they suggest.
Okay, I’m headed down to LA (that would be Los Angeles, not Louisiana) now. If you see an Asian person in desperate need of a haircut and wearing age-inappropriate clothing, why, that is probably me, so please say hello.

cake in a cup

Well, who knew how many lives out there had been touched by Spam? I especially liked the stories about crosshatching the Spam and sticking in cloves. That actually made me laugh out loud.
After the salt lick, I felt the need for a little sweet treat. We are out of chocolate and ice cream and even Jell-o snacks (I told you I ate Spam, so now I can confess to liking those little fruit and Jell-o snacks), and then I remembered a purchase from months ago:
cocoa chiffon box.JPG
The box says, “MOKO MOKO COCOA CHIFFON.” Seriously. Kelli over at the fun food blog lovescool wrote about these a while back. Okay, she wrote about them here. Anyway, the box comes with two pouches of cake mix. You mix one pouch with one egg in a mug/cup then nuke it for a minute or so. Here is the result:

Sorry, not a very pretty photo. Anyway, it is a little bit rubbery/spongy like how angel food cake can be a tad rubbery, but I LIKE that kind of rubbery, so I declare it a winner!

spam, wonderful spam

Warning: This is not a vegetarian-friendly post!

spam can.JPG

Peter went to the grocery store today, and surprisingly, he brought home a can of Spam. Lately he has been intrigued with Spam. We must have seen something on the Food Network or the History Channel or something. Anyway, I don’t think he has ever eaten Spam. Me, I grew up on the stuff. My father liked to fry it then eat it with soy sauce and rice. I liked the saltiness of it, but I didn’t like the gelatinous glop in which it was embedded, nor was I fond of the little hard gristly bits that I would encounter from time to time.
Anyway, Spam has come a long way since those days. Peter picked up the “lower salt” version of it, which is really kind of pointless, because it is still a salt lick. I sliced it, brushed on some soy sauce/mirin mix (yeah, genius move, add some more salt to it. Gah!), and threw it on the grill:

You really gotta have it with rice. Any Spam memories out there?

beacon

Um, you might want to put on some sunglasses for this post. So Carolyn forced upon me sent me a cotton shower curtain dotted with palm trees. I asked if she wanted me to make her a bag or something with it, and she said, well, maybe a beach bag.

beach bag.JPG

Yeah, it is kind of bright, isn’t it? Peter said it could be used as a Coast Guard beacon. I know you won’t believe me, but I chose the green to TONE DOWN the brightness. Yes, I was going to use the pink on the front as well as the sides! Well, at least Carolyn won’t be able to misplace this bag.

phony baloney

I got a new chair today:

fake chair.JPG

Does it sort of look like an Emeco chair? I think it’s supposed to. The minus is it’s not aluminum, so it’s not super light. The plus, however, is that it cost about $240 less than a real Emeco chair. Yes, folks, it’s a Kmart special ($29 on sale). I think it will be a nice addition to my sewing room.

conspiracy theory

Peter has been harassing me for some time about making some cushions and such for his boat. I try to tell him that my sewing machines aren’t equipped for that kind of project, and then Carolyn sends this!

I wonder if the two of them are in cahoots.

and miles to go before I rest

You probably think I’ve gone bag happy and haven’t been knitting at all, right? Well, wrong! I HAVE been knitting, and I am near completion on the bolero thing from the summer Vogue Knitting, but I fear this is going to be one of those neverending projects. Why? Take a look:

bolero thing.JPG

See the edging band on the bottom? I have to knit a million miles of this, enough to go around the entire bottom, the front openings, and the neck. It is a 4-row, 7-stitch pattern repeat. Oh, and Vogue Knitting provides helpful instructions, such as “attach as you go along.” Yeah, THANKS. Aiyaaaaa!

shoes for sale

Hey! The auctions have ended, and I want to thank you all for your participation and interest. I guess I can now confess that I had a dream that a couple didn’t sell and a couple sold for $2.25! Anyway, I hope the auction winners enjoy their wares.
So anyway, I told Carolyn I would help her try to sell a pair of shoes she recently purchased. She can’t wear them because her orthotics don’t fit into them, and take it from a fellow orthotics wearer, it’s not worth the risk to go commando.

keen.jpg

FOR SALE: one brand new pair of black Keen Seattle shoes in size 8.5. $65 via paypal. Price INCLUDES shipping! Such a steal! These shoes sell for around $85. If interested, please contact Carolyn at carolyn(at)prettyposies(dot)com.

bag for thuy

It was the schmeebot‘s birthday the other day, so I made her a little bag:

thuy case.JPG thuy case side.JPG

It is sort of a makeup case style. I’m out of practice at this design, so there were some hair-ripping moments, but I think it came out pretty cute. The fabric is super cute, so that helps. Heh heh.
So speaking of bags, the ebay auctions end Tuesday! The first one ends at 2:30 pm Pacific Time, so please get your last-minute bids in there if you are interested. Thank you all for your interest and support!

house frau

I decided to sew something today so I’d have something to blog about. Ha ha. So anyway, it gets pretty hot here in the summer, and last year I thought it’d be a good idea to make some T-shirt dresses. Cool and comfortable, right? I finally got around to getting some cotton knit fabric, and today I made this T-shirt dress:

house dress.JPG

The thing is, the fabric I got is quite heavy, which means it’s, um, really hot. Also, I am not crazy about the super wide neckline. I thought it’d be a more normal V-neck. Alas, it should be fine in more temperate weather and ideal for completing house chores.
The pattern is New Look 6374:
