can you do the scan scan

I saw some cool old photographs on Hannah’s site that she got from a thrift store, and that got me thinking about some trading cards I got about 5 years ago at an antique fair. I had been planning on framing them, but alas, they have been sitting in a box in a desk drawer. The cards were a promotional “gift” from Jersey Coffee, I guess. They feature my hometown of Portland, OR, and yes, I SCANNED THEM.

On a completely different note, I am completely in love with Wendy’s new ad campaign here. It has a wacky Japanese sensibility that I cannot resist. I can, however, resist Wendy’s food (well, except for the Frosty treats).

we all scream

I talked about luck and winning prizes when I won that Stila lip glaze stuff a while back. Well, I WON ANOTHER PRIZE! I won a neighborhood ice cream party from Dreyer’s! Our party is set for July 24. Dreyer’s sends enough ice cream to feed 100 people, so if you’re in the neighborhood, drop by. Heh. Today the “party box” of supplies arrived:

I thought it was just going to have cheesy paper bowls and stuff, but no! Look at the cute mini ice cream containers! Heavy plastic ice cream scoops! Nametags and a Sharpie! Wheee!
They also sent this sign:

I don’t think we’ll be putting that on our front lawn, though.

targeted

During the spring, I met two Japanese high school exchange students on a weekly basis so I could practice my conversational Japanese. They are great girls and were really helpful (though I can’t say my skills have improved much). One of them went back to Japan last week, and the other one, Kanako, is going home this weekend. I thought we should have a last hurrah, so I took Kanako to Target today (her request). We were there so long I am surprised the sun was still out when we exited (good thing today is summer solstice). I did get some more Twizzlers Twerpz and and a bag of M&Ms of a mixed variety! It has plain, peanut, and crispy ALL MIXED TOGETHER. I have mixed (no pun intended) feelings about this.
Anyway, blah blah. Here is a photo of some mastodon plushes that Kanako gave me! She said I am the only person she knows in this country who would be able to fully appreciate them. I am flattered. I believe they are from the Nagoya World’s Fair.

longer days

Well, I just finished assembling my six ebay auctions! The first one will commence Tuesday, June 21, at 2:30pm Pacific Time. I’ll post a button to the right so you can maybe jump to the auctions. I don’t really know how all this works, so I apologize for not making it simpler! I want to keep the auctions fun and gamelike, so I decided to start them all off at a buck. If I make $1.40, so be it! That’s okay! This is all for fun! Anyway, so until the auctions actually begin, you can go here to see all the bags and more details, if you’re interested. And thanks again, everyone, for your encouragement and support.
And now I leave you with a photo of Peter and Deedle climbing a big rock. It was fun to watch Deedle scramble up the side of it.

scan central

I got a scanner yesterday, and I am loopy for it! I want to scan everything now! I was going to show you a scan of Peter’s to-do list for today, but he rejected that idea. Hmph. So, here is a scan of some very cute fabric I received from the very generous Carolyn:

bonjour roosters.jpg

Cute, huh? Little rooster heads holding “bonjour” signs! Merci, mon amie!
And thank you all for your nice comments about the bags. I think I will throw caution to the wind and just auction them all off. My concern, you see, is I’m planning to start the bidding at a low amount, and I thought perhaps they’d end up selling for $1.40 or something, and I would end up losing money. I’m just going to be brave, though, and DO IT. I’ll try to get them up early next week, and you’ll be the first to know!
Have a good weekend, y’all. We’re heading up to the mountains for a couple of days, so no blogging.

to sell or not to sell

A couple weeks ago Thuy told me I had to make three zippered pouches and three totes by June 15. She further instructed me to sell these items on ebay. I made the deadline!

Okay, so here’s the thing. I don’t know if anyone is going to want any of these, so I think I will start by offering up one pouch and one tote on ebay next week. Any suggestions as to which ones I should auction off first?
On another note, Amyville Amy asked me to thank everyone for their kind comments about her wares. Her stuff is really great, so if you don’t have any yet, go buy some!

eggplant central

STOP THE PRESSES. Mailman Dave is BACK! Thank goodness, because I was really starting to lose it. The last couple of days the mail arrived really early in the morning, and it was kind of freaking me out. Today, though, Peter came in carrying TWO boxes, and I KNEW Dave was back, because he always brings me good mail. I think I am going to give him some chocolate tomorrow.
Anyway, here is one of the things Dave brought me today–custom eggplant earrings by the amazingly talented Amy of Amyville!

what’s better than a cake? cupcakes!

Flag day also happens to be my neighbor Sally’s birthday. I told her I’d make her the white trash pistachio cake (Carolyn sent me the recipe) since she raved about it the last time I made it. I decided to convert it to cupcakes, since cupcakes are so festive (and also so I could have some!).

I posted the recipe the last time I made this, but who wants to go digging around the archives? Not me, so here’s the recipe again …

father’s day is fast approaching

As a kid, I don’t recall Mother’s Day or Father’s Day being such huge commercial holidays, but what can you do? Usually I just send my father a card, but this year I decided I’d order him a couple little goodies. To call my father a packrat would be a gross understatement, so buying him additional novelty products is sort of like giving candy to a diabetic, but hey, he’s 89, so who cares! Throw caution to the wind!
windup rice bowl.jpg windup noodle 1.jpg
Yup, wind-up ramen and rice bowls from Spiral and Circle! I didn’t get him the whole set, mind you. I just got him the tempura soba and the unagi donburi. They are small, so it shouldn’t add to the clutter too much …

je vais tricoter avec le fil de variegated

Apparently Carolyn decided she had a few too many miles (seriously, she knows how many MILES of yarn she has in her stash) of variegated yarn, cuz I got a surprise package today*:

phil ruban.JPG

Enough Phil Ruban to make the long-sleeved sweater in the accompanying French knitmag! By the way, I realize the photo is blurry. I was too lazy to reshoot, so please just pretend it’s an artsy fartsy shot, and the blurriness is intentional. MERCI BEAUCOUP, MON AMIE.
*The package came via UPS. I’m afraid the mailboy has gone back to his ways of providing only low-quality mail. I asked him about the whereabouts of Dave, and he feigned ignorance while carefully backing away from our door.
