judging a book by its cover

I am a sucker for packaging, and I think all everyday items, such as garbage cans, utensil holders, pencils, sandwich bags, you name it, should be cute or pleasing to the eye. I mean, why not? So, when I saw these cute household items at the store the other day, they quickly landed in my shopping cart:

dogs like tea, too

Just over a week ago I noticed that our mail was coming later in the day. I thought maybe our regular mailman Dave was on vacation or something, but he is still gone! I don’t know if he up and retired on me or if his route was changed. I have been very disturbed over it. The replacement/fill-in guy is a KID, a mailboy if you will, and he shoves our mail WAY back into the box, and sometimes there are wet smudges on the mail, as if he has been sweating or dripping water onto it. I also convinced myself that because of HIM, I was not getting high-quality mail (I know it’s irrational, but some days mail is all I have, OKAY?).
Well today he rang the doorbell and very timidly handed me my mail. Actually, he practically dropped it at my feet and ran away. I think, though, that the Curse of the Bad Mail has been broken, cuz look at the lovely matcha dog plush I received:

I still want Dave back, though.

just can’t get enough

I know I have been a little loopy for the skirts lately, but hey, it’s one way to get through my stash, right? I decided to try my hand at that skirt from the Japanese skirt book (Skirt a la Carte) I bought recently:

You can’t really tell from the photo, but the pockets have little tucks in them. I had some issues with the waistband, but since I never tuck anything in, nobody will be able to see the poor workmanship. I wonder which skirt I should make next?

T complete

I tend not to show progress reports on my knitting projects, so it might not seem like I am knitting at all, but I assure you I am. Here’s proof: I finally finished my Nuthin’ but a T!

nuttin but a T.JPG

It was a fun knit. I especially enjoyed doing the little fold up waistband and cuffs. Very clever, that designer Alison! I made the small size and ended up using just 4 balls of Rowan Calmer for the main body (it calls for 5).
On another note, I got to meet Kelly and her daughter Brynne this weekend (the lucky girl who had the monkey-themed birthday party recently). Can you believe I took not one photo, even though we went to the park and Brynne got to play on giant plastic dinosaurs? Urgh, next time!

fab fab finds

I found out about an impending garage sale of vintage decorator fabrics and was lucky enough to get a sneak peek. The hostess of the garage sale used to be an interior designer in Los Angeles, and she held onto all of her fabric samples. It became time to unload, and I was happy to help her!
The picture quality isn’t great, but check out these vintage Herman Miller pieces by Alexander Girard:

And the rest of the loot. Some of these are by Hasi Hester, a designer in LA. I had never heard of him, but I guess he was pretty well known during his heyday.

I got all this for $20! If there’s enough of that green Herman Miller, I might use it to redo an ottoman.

we’re ready for our haircuts, please

A while back Megan (yes, cancer-killing Megan) asked me if I could make her some haircutting capes (cuz she is a hairdresser). I immediately had visions of wildly colored, swirling capes, but then when I voiced my excitement, she said to me, “Black would be fine.” I DON’T THINK SO, MISSY.

Okay, so I DID buy some black nylon, too. You can’t tell from the photo, but the design is a bunch of lines of dots. Very cool! The cape wasn’t too bad to create, but it took a while, because I had to carefully make and pin on miles and miles of bias tape. The horror! Anyway, I hope she likes it, even if it isn’t black. Maybe she can use it on the more unruly clients.

what once was old is new again

Last year I made a skirt out of some circus fabric (I’d load the photo, but for some reason I am unable to do so). I loved the fabric, but the skirt was kind of frumpy and plain. So, last night I added a flounce!

I must say I was unsure about the ruffle after I added it. I decided that I would put on the skirt, and if Peter laughed uncontrollably, then I would need to rethink the whole flounce situation. Well, he didn’t laugh, and I decided to wear it today. It is rather flirty and fun to wear. Making this modification was really easy, so if you have some garments in your closet that could use a little spicing up, go for it!

super crafty cabinet maker

I guess I am the indoor craftsperson, and Peter is the outdoor craftsperson. Look what he whipped up over the weekend:

Before and After

There’s the unsightly electrical box with cords followed by the lovely custom cabinet. Since I am, as my brother would say, an idiot, I didn’t take the photos from the same angle. Sorry.
Hope everyone had a nice long weekend. Yesterday we went to Santa Barbara for the day. I know that might sound glamorous, and yes, it’s nice we can go there for the day, but really, we spent most of the time just getting there and back. Here’s the view from the house we visited:

Nice ocean view, huh?
Oh, and one final thing. I tested out Skype today with my brother, and it is great! The audio is very clear. Y’all should get on it!

daisy dukes

No, I don’t wear short shorts like Daisy Duke, but I do wear daisy shorts!

daisy shorts.JPG

I used my standard McCall’s shorts/pants pattern (it has been discontinued) and the leftover vintage daisy fabric. Very comfy!
And can we talk about doing stupid stuff now? I just downloaded and installed Trillian, one of the instant message thingies. Now, I’m not really an instant message kind of gal. I recently installed Skype, but the only ‘person’ I have spoken to is the robot test voice. At some point years ago I signed up with maybe Yahoo or AIM or something like that. When I installed Trillian, I typed in what I thought my user name may have been for the services, but I had no idea if it was correct. I log on, and there are names from YEARS ago on there. Where did they come from? And then I get an instant message from someone, and I DID NOT KNOW WHO IT WAS. The person mentioned something about having a sister, so I called my brother and asked IS THIS YOU, and he called me an idiot, since it was indeed him. I am too old for this instant message business.

calling all knitblunners

Here’s an invitation for all you knitblunners out there (knitblogger + runner). The San Francisco Marathon is coming up on July 31, 2005, and a small group of us are planning to do the half-marathon. So far it’s a small group: Joanna, Becca, Rachael (though rumor has it she is trying to flake. DON’T LET HER), me, a couple of my college buddies. We’d love to have some more runners join us. Just think how much fun it will be! Breakfast afterwards (the race starts at 5:30am, so yes, we’ll be finished in time for breakfast), and hey, Artfibers is a SHORT WALK from the finish.
The race used to go over the Golden Gate Bridge, but they discontinued that several years ago. I was lucky enough to be able to run over the bridge a couple times, and it was cool. Well, the TRADITION IS BACK, so you should be tempted even more! And since I’m doing the half this year instead of the full, I will be half as smelly yet twice as perky. Now don’t you REALLY want to join us? You can even get a blackmail lovely photo taken of you!
