skirtin’ around

You know how sometimes you see something, and you kind of want it, but you decide you don’t *need* it, and then you start thinking about it more and more and kicking yourself for not getting it? Well, thank goodness for online shopping! Kinokuniya saved me from this torture and delivered this sassy little skirt book to my doorstep:

skirt alacarte.JPG

It’s called Skirt a la Carte and complements my Pretty Skirt book (the one Alison sent me last year) very nicely. Here are a couple more skirts from the book:

Now I need some advice. I think I’m going to make a skirt with the spirograph fabric I got the other day. I might make the skirt on the cover of Skirt a la Carte, but I am also attracted to this style from the Pretty Skirt book:
skirts yoke.JPG

The skirts have a yoke and then some gathering or soft pleating. The thing is, I am short, and my legs are shorter. Is this style going to accentuate that fact and make me look like a big box? Sigh, I want to make one of every design!
Oh, and in case you’re curious, the ISBN for Skirt a la Carte is 4-579-11000-5 and for Pretty Skirt it’s 4-579-10949-X.

sunny side up

Amy has a couple new lines of jewelry available at amyville now. And lucky me, I got a pair of breakfast earrings!

With my donut necklace, I have a complete breakfast.

do you like totes a lot, totes a lot, totes a lot

You’d think I have enough bags, but, well, Peter doesn’t call me the bag lady for nuthin’! When I saw some of Chikako‘s new items at her Nordic Section shop, I just couldn’t resist this little goodie:

nordic tote.JPG

Cute, huh? It’s a nice little tote!
And here are some gift bags I picked up at Ichiban Kan, the dollar store in San Francisco’s Japantown:

I don’t know if you can read the text very well. The one on the left features a squirrel saying, “If acorns are not collected more!” Um, yeah, right on squirrely! The one in the middle has a dog wanting to go for a walk, and the pink one on the right has an elephant stating, “It is fine. I want to go to play somewhere.”

I have returned

Well, Amy is safe at home now. We had a fun-filled weekend with glorious weather! We stayed in a very cute little hotel in San Francisco that I must recommend: Cornell Hotel. It’s a French hotel in a great location just above Union Square. They even have a resident Golden Retriever that escorts you to your room and understands French!
Okay, I have to confess that I only took one photo the entire weekend. Here it is:

amy with matcha drink.JPG

There’s Amy with her frozen slushy matcha drink with little mochi squares on top. We got those at Cafe Hana in Japantown, where we also hunted down craft books and cute stationery at Kinokuniya. We also got incredible 15-minute shiatsu massages from some young lanky Asian boy and had dinner with cancer-killing Megan.
So anyway, Saturday we hit the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market where we enjoyed Blue Bottle Coffee and sampled June Taylor jams. We met Thuy there, whom we dragged around downtown with us (she has quite a few incriminating photos of the day). After the market we went to the yarn mecca that is Artfibers. Now, I know a lot of you out there hear about Artfibers all the time, but really, you can’t know how amazing the place is without actually GOING there. The web site cannot accurately reflect how luscious and yummy and addictive the yarns are!
I am getting kind of boring with my blow-by-blow account. I’ll just say that we also hit Britex Fabrics, saw a man wearing all orange and yellow and carrying an orange and yellow Hello Kitty messenger bag (yes, he was dressed more colorfully and ridiculously than me!), and went by Kinokuniya in San Jose, too. Sadly, we missed Rachael, the Full Thread Ahead launch party, and the Mike Doughty show, but one can only do so much.
I have to go fold laundry now, so I will leave you with a shot of my new jam and fabric:

I hope you all had a weekend as fun as mine!

heading north

Amy of amyville is coming to visit for the weekend. She’s never been to San Francisco before, so we are heading up there as soon as her plane touches down! If you see a crazy blonde and a crazy Asian eschewing the San Francisco uniform of all-black clothing and chattering nonstop, that’s probably us. Stop and say hello!

daisy duffel

I have a nice little stash of vintage fabrics. I dug into it the other day to make a little duffel bag:
daisy duffel.JPG
I lined it with some heavy nylon, so it sorta kinda holds its form. I have enough fabric remaining to make some shorts!
On another note, I thought I’d try to improve my posture by purchasing one of these Sissel SitFit Plus cushion thingies.

It kind of looks like one of those hemorrhoid donuts, doesn’t it? Heh. Anyway, it forces you to sit up straight and use your abdominal muscles to hold your body upright or something. All I know is I only lasted a few hours. I guess I have to build up my spinal stamina!

I won a prize

I have a confession to make: I subscribe to Lucky Magazine, and I enjoy entering the giveaway contests they list in the back of the magazine. Call me an optimist. Well, today Lady Luck came a-callin’, cuz I won this here prize:

hair clips galore

I was fortunate enough to receive one of the coveted spots in the Secret Pink Hair Accessory Swap hosted by the one and only Kat/Pinku. Today I got my hair accessories from Melinda, an Aussie living in Japan:

Cute, huh? And how cute is Melinda in that photo, clutching her giant box of melon Pocky! I feel like sticking all those hair accessories into my coif at once!
And for those of you who are curious about how that KnitPicks Shine yarn is, here’s a peek at the color cherry:

It’s kind of a strong tomato red, I think. Can’t wait to swatch it up!

sewing soothes the savage eggplant

There is nothing more pleasant than spending a Sunday afternoon sewing. I am digging the new configuration of the MPR (multipurpose room), and it is much more conducive to sewing! Today I made this skirt:

dot skirt.JPG

I put a little ribbon and bow on it in an attempt to mimic these from Garnet Hill. The pattern is New Look 6345, which I bought last year and have used for several skirts. The skirt sits on the hips rather than around the waist (I detest having anything around my waist), so it’s very slouchy and comfy. The fabric is cotton with a wee bit of lycra in it, and I received it by accident. I ordered polka dotted cotton lycra from Sewzanne’s, and they sent this polka dotted fabric instead. They sent me the correct stuff AND said I could keep this piece. Score!

free frosty weekend

Yes, fast food is bad for you, but this weekend Wendy’s is giving away free Frostys. I find it’s pretty easy to rationalize going to a fast food establishment if it involves a frozen sweet treat, and hey, it’s FREE.
