if this isn’t the mother lode …

I received a parcel from Marie. Feast your eyes!

I cannot even put into words how happy Tim Tams make me. They are so delicious. It is all I can do to keep from just cramming every single one into my mouth AT ONCE. She sent some chewy fudge ones and caramel ones along with the originals. All scrumptious! And hey, the crisps and tea are great, too!
On an unrelated note, Lion Brand is discontinuing Cotton-Ease! It’s a great cotton/acrylic blend that is easy on the pocketbook and a wonderful substitute for many yarns. Get it while you can, people!

pants

I realized that my pants inventory is rather low, so I thought I’d sew up a couple pairs. I got some sturdy Supplex nylon at Rose City Textiles and attempted to mimic those sporty outdoorsy pants like they have at REI or in the Athleta catalog. I used a McCall’s pants pattern that I’ve used several times now (I tend to stick to standards) but added contrasting stitching and back pockets:

They’re a little baggy in the legs, and whoah, they make my butt look pretty humongous in that shot, but they are pretty comfy and rugged, and I don’t think anyone’s taking sneak peeks at my rear anyway. On to the khaki pair!

what’s on your list?

So much to knit, and so little time! I just started on the Nothin’ but a T-shirt pattern from Magknits. I have two more things on my plate after this:
-The Special Kay striped sweater from Sarah Dallas’s Vintage Knits book. Here’s what the cover of the book looks like:
vintage knits.jpg
I am going to call it the Special Kay sweater, because Kay gifted me the yarn! Maybe I should call it the Super Special Kay? Hmmmm.
– The bolero thingy from the summer 2005 Vogue Knitting. Here’s what it looks like:
Vogue knitting bolero.jpg
Is that a cheese pizza on her lap? Anyway, I think it will be a perfect little summer wrap when the air conditioning gets a bit much. I plan to use Shine in cherry from KnitPicks. Machine washable and dryable? I’m there!
I’m sure I can find more, but these are the definite next two projects! Really! So what are you all planning to knit this spring/summer?

semi organized

We live in a pretty teeny house. I suppose if we had less crud it wouldn’t seem so teeny. Anyway, the front bedroom is our MPR (multi-purpose room. Remember when schools used to have separate cafeterias, gymnasiums, and auditoriums? No more. Now they have MPRs. I think that term is kind of funny, though, so I like to use it. MPR! MPR! Ha ha ha!). It is a guest room, sewing room, storage room, and Peter’s dressing room. Basically, it is a mess!
Yesterday I decided I needed to tackle it and get the other metal table in there and do some supereggplant-style organization (which is to say half-assed). It does make it easier to sew, but man, I need to stop stashing and stockpiling!

think pink

I know most of the knitblog world is off to Maryland right now, but the rest of us can still have fun, right? Well, I finally finished my top-down raglan cardigan! Tadaaaa.

pink cardie.bmp

I used the Incredible, Custom-Fit Raglan Sweater Generator, which you can find here. I must say I was a bit skeptical, mostly because I didn’t trust my measurements or math, but I am really happy with the sweater. I wanted a kicky little sweater I could throw on, and this really fits the bill. I used about 15 balls of GGH GOA in hot pink, and the zipper is a two-way zipper I ordered from Zippersource.
Here’s a glimpse at the back of the sweater. I used a cable pattern from one of the sweaters in Paton’s Street Style (at least I think that’s what it’s called):

colors

A friend sent me a big bagful of hard candies by the Stained Glass Candy Company. It has a really interesting history–husband gets in an accident that permanently messes up his taste buds; wife creates uber-flavored candies so he’ll actually be able to taste the flavors; a candy company is born! How great is that? I’m kind of scared of some of the flavors, but in the interest of research, I will try them.

I must also share a glimpse of this great nylon fabric some friends gave me. It had been buried for quite some time. I would love to make a whole windbreaker suit out of it!

back from portland

Well, we made it back, and I survived the few days sans knitting! We were chasing around quite a bit, so I wouldn’t have had much time to knit, anyway. I didn’t take many photos, but as you might suspect, I have more photos of food.
Saturday evening Peter and I went to dinner with my mother and psycho bro. We went to BeWon, a fancy Korean restaurant in my parents’ neighborhood. Peter and my brother got the 8-course meal. Here is one of the courses–little miniature crepes with mushrooms, egg, meat, spinach, all kinds of little morsels!
bewon crepes.JPG
And here are some of the side dishes they bring you: two kinds of kim chee, marinated squid, mushrooms, daikon radish, burdock root, black beans, etc. I feel sorry for the dishwasher.

The craziest thing about our meal at BeWon? At one point my brother looked out the window and said, “Oh no, it’s a knitter.” I looked out, and there were four women, one of them knitting. One woman was walking away, and she looked so much like Jessica that I almost ran outside and said something, but my mind didn’t work quickly enough. I found out today that it was indeed her! What are the chances?
Okay, one more food shot. For lunch Sunday my mother, Peter, and I went up to Skyline Burgers, one of my favorite spots in Portland. I’ve been going there since I was a kid, and I usually get the same thing: a Smoky Burger and a cherry soda. Here’s my mother with my cherry soda:
skyline mom.JPG
I did manage to make it to Rose City Textiles with Mrs. H. What a glorious place! I came away with a few goodies:
rct purchases.JPG
The black and beige fabrics are some sort of heavy-duty supplex nylon. I am going to use them for pants with contrasting stitching. The pink is cordura, and I think I’ll use it for bags. The fabric on the right is nylon, and I’m using it to make cancer-surviving Megan a hair-cutting cape (she’s a hairdresser. She asked me to make her some hair-cutting capes then told me that black would be fine. Hello? How many years has she known me?).

weekend getaway

Sorry for the absence, but we are in Portland for the weekend, and I did not bring any knitting projects. I’m in between things right now, so there wasn’t anything appropriate to bring. I feel rather lost. In the meantime, let me share a couple of shots from Burgerville, a local fast-food chain that serves grass-fed beef and other goodies. Right now they have fresh strawberry shakes, hence the giant paper strawberries hanging from the ceiling:

I got the crispy chicken sandwich combo. Mmmmm.

organic chocolate

There’s a restaurant in one of the little beach towns around here that serves great clam chowder. You can get it in a bread bowl, which I think is one of the greatest inventions in the world. Rachael introduced me to the restaurant, and she loves it so much that she has their number in her speed dial!
Anyway, it’s a little far from me, but just a few weeks ago they opened a second location in San Luis Obispo that also has a bakery and organic fair trade chocolate from a local company, Sweet Earth Organic Chocolates! I popped by to get some goodies, some of which will be going to the pink cookie fairy.
sweet earth chocolates.JPG
They have cocoa, chocolate chips, candy bars, truffles, etc. I haven’t tasted any yet (though I did get a sample of an orange chocolate truffle. Yum).
And now a question about Rowan Calmer–do I need to wash my swatch? I don’t really want to.

random stuff

I’ve been busy or something lately, so not much crafting has been going on. We did go see David Sedaris last night, and he was so hilarious our faces hurt. He encouraged everyone to buy this book, which he edited. All proceeds go to support 826NYC, a nonprofit tutoring center in Brooklyn, New York, that was founded, I believe, by Dave Eggers. Go here if you want more info.
In other news, Tooth Carrie sent me this very cool duct tape wallet in aubergine:

duct tape wallet.JPG

I’m going to have to think of some secret items to stash away in there. Incidentally, Tooth Carrie is responsible for introducing me to Fritzie Fresh Gummi Brightcrawlers, the hands-down most delicious gummi candy I have ever had. I even contacted Fritzie Fresh to find out about their distribution, but alas, it seems only the lucky Minnesotans have access to the Fritzie Fresh goodness.
So speaking of stash, I finally redeemed a gift certificate I got from Carolyn and Joanna last year for Threadbear (phew, that was a lot o’ linkin’):

Some Rowan Calmer so I can make Nothin’ but a T-shirt from Magknits!
