christmas dinner dessert

We always go to my sister-in-law’s for Christmas morning. It’s tradition that we get there early, have coffee and scones or sweet rolls, then open presents, which can take a long time (and which leaves the living room looking like a wrapping paper slaughterhouse). After that we sit down to breakfast. There’s always strata, sausage, and fruit.
There doesn’t seem to be a tradition regarding Christmas dinner, so I thought I’d volunteer this year. I didn’t want my sister-in-law to feel obligated to do yet another big meal for everyone. Well, my timing proved impeccable–it turns out my brother-in-law bought a prime rib intended for Christmas dinner the DAY BEFORE I volunteered. I am off the hook for dinner, but I will be bringing dessert. I haven’t decided yet what to make. Any suggestions? Does your family have a traditional Christmas dinner dessert?

who’s sick of keyhole scarflets?

Not me! The knitting of keyhole scarflets continues. Last night I made this one for my cute little French teacher:

Now I am starting one using the yummy, eggplant-colored yarn that Melissa sent with my lovely Action Hero scarf!

Two tone knitting

This is what can happen when you run out of yarn:

The two sections are quite lovely separately, but together? Well, I think it could work with a bit of attitude, but Peter says no cigar. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough of either to make a full scarflet. Grrrr.

Lucky me

How fancy am I with my brand new Action Hero scarf?

Action Hero Melissa made a bunch of scarves to sell at the holiday craft bazaar at Posie in Portland, and she had a few left over, so we decided to do a swap. Isn’t the scarf incredible? AND, you will notice she also sent along a few little yarn goodies! I’m going to make her some cocktail and dinner napkins in return (I know, doesn’t seem like a fair trade, does it?). I just placed the order for the fabric at Reprodepot Fabric!
Tonight was the book group holiday potluck. I volunteered to make the dessert. Since I just bought a Martha Stewart trifle dish at K-Mart, I decided that I should make … a trifle! I opted for the Autumn Trifle with Roasted Pears and Apples with Pumpkin-Caramel Sauce from epicurious.com. It was yummy, if I do say so myself.

And lastly, maybe all of you know about these lovely retro knitting books, but I did not! Thanks to Cat Manning, who designed the chemo megan shirts, for the heads up! Now I am going to go squeeze in about 30 minutes of knitting before bedtime.

christmas wonderland

When we were looking for houses a few years back, Peter was adamant about not wanting to live on an “event street,” a street that hosts various gatherings or has parades or anything that requires the residents to do something. Well, he did not get his wish, because we live on an event street. Every year, on the second Saturday of December, the Vine Street Victorian Showcase hits town. They block off Vine Street from 8th to 21st for the night and have various performers and activities about every other house. We live smack dab in the middle of it all. This means we are ‘strongly encouraged’ to decorate the house with Christmas lights and to host something. For the past few years we have had Songs by Stephanie in our front yard. Next door they had the Snow King and Queen, a couple of houses down they had some rock band, and across the street they had Santa’s Phoneline, storytelling, and the booth for lost kids. It is really something else. They estimate that some 25,000 people attend.
Last year was the first year the event got rained out. It began as normal, but it began to POUR shortly after the event started, and they had to shut things down. Rain was gushing down the streets like creeks, and it was so windy that people were getting drenched. Unfortunately, last year was when we decided to have sort of an open house so people could drop by. This is how much food I made:

Hardly anyone came, so I had a lot of food left over. This year I made two batches of cookies and some apple cider and called it a day.
Remember those alpacas? Well, the alpaca lady brings a few alpacas down for the showcase every year! Here they are in all their nighttime blurry glory:

They were very cute but rightly suspicious of all the little hands reaching out to try to touch them.

No kinky knitting allowed

What the ?
kinky needle (Small).JPG
Bad Crystal Palace needles! Bad! No kinky needles allowed! I will try pouring hot water over them as suggested somewhere. Any other ideas?
Hey, have you all signed up for the Stash Redistribution Project? Very cool idea! With five boxes circulating around the US, though, I feel like I am going to have to buy yarn especially for this project!

death by croissant

I know it’s impossible, but I feel like I have a croissant allergy. I had one this morning, and shortly after eating it, my head started to hurt, and I felt really cruddy and had to take a nap. All day I have felt icky. The last time I ate a croissant was the day I left Portland, and, well, let’s just say I left the croissant behind in Portland.
Yesterday I met an alpaca farmer. She is quite obsessed with alpacas (and with figure skating, but that is another story). I bought a couple of little skeins of alpaca yarn from her. She is trying to convince me that spinning is a hobby I cannot live without.

Merry Christmas to Megan

Yes, Megan needs pink stuff, so here’s her Christmas goody!

I used Gedifra Cortina, which is fun stuff, but it sheds a bit.

passion for pink

Another keyhole scarf! In pink this time!
pink scarf (Small).JPG
I used that chunky Gedifra yarn and some leftover Mustachio on the ends. I think this scarf might have to go to Megan, since she is battling breast cancer and needs more pink things!
And Merry Christmas to me from Taya! Look what Pete the UPS guy brought:

I LOVE these plates. I had even cut out the photo from the Garnet Hill catalog!! Look at that little squirrel (or is it a chipmunk? Oh man)!

sweet dreams

While Peter put up the outside Christmas lights today, I finished sewing a pillowcase for my lunatic brother:

I so love this fabric. I don’t know if my brother is worthy of it; I don’t think he is capable of loving it as much as I do. But guess what? Yes, I cut up some cocktail napkins from the scraps!
