holiday crafting

When I visited the Fabric Depot in Portland a few weeks ago, I found some fabric that totally reminded me of my friend Wendy. She has always been into vintage prints and retro stuff. This weekend I sewed a little bucket purse and apron for her (can you see the rickrack?)

Here’s what it looks like on (sorry about the blurriness):

My in-laws came over yesterday, and we all just hung around the house. My father-in-law watched ESPN, Peter wandered around putting awnings onto the house and talking to his parents, and my mother-in-law painted these tiny little wooden figurines for an advent calendar she is making for her great grandson:

I also finished knitting one Christmas gift. Now I need to get back on track with the candy-colored Bucket o’ Chic, since it has gotten very, very cold here (well, for California, anyway), and I need to keep my noggin’ warm!

Spreading the chocolatey love!

A couple of months ago I posted about Cabaret Chocolates, a new fine chocolatier based in San Francisco. I admired the company because it was started by a couple of guys following their bliss (that sounds corny, but you know what I mean). Well, Tim, one of the bliss-following guys, found my blog and is now offering a 20 percent discount on your first order! Just type in “superegg” in the coupon code section during checkout. As Tim states so eloquently, “Few things go better with knitting than super premium chocolates.” He also mentioned that if anyone wants to place a large order for holiday gifts, he will set aside 20 percent of the proceeds and donate it to the charity of choice in that person’s name. How cool is that! To read more about this amazing company, go here or here.
In other goodness, behold the splendor of the pink hoodie!

I think the bucket will go very well with it if/when I finish it up!
And a couple more good items: yet another knitting blogger has shown her generosity and thoughtfulness by purchasing one of the chemo megan shirts to support my buddy Megan. A huge thank you to Sharlyn!!!!
And finally (for today, anyway), the San Francisco Giant Robot store is set to open November 28 at 622 Shrader Street. They’ll have sort of an opening party that day from 4pm onward. If you like whimsical stuff, such as novelty t-shirts, crazy Japanese stickers and notepads, and zines (which I do not understand in the least, but hey, I’m old), then go support Giant Robot!
I’m out of breath now. Hope everyone is doing well out there in blogland!

bucket o’ disaster

Last night right around bedtime, I got to the point of binding off the brim of the Bucket o’ Chic. I had an ominous feeling already, since the brim was rolling like crazy even before binding off, but I figured I’d go ahead to see how the thing fit.
bucketodisaster (Small).JPG
That is my crazy look of frustration. Hee hee. I’ve decided to rip out the brim and make the band a bit smaller. I really wanted to have it finished in time for the pink hoodie’s arrival, but I don’t think it’s going to happen, since I don’t feel like working on it tonight. I do totally love the yarn colors, though!
I want to send a big thank you out to Julie, who also found me a pink hoodie! Since Silvia already got me one, Julie decided to keep it! Yay for the pink hoodie, and yay for the generous help of knit bloggers!

my kingdom for a pink hoodie

Well, the fabulous Silvia found me the coveted pink hoodie! THANK YOU. Knit bloggers unite!
I started on the brim of the candy-colored Bucket o’ Chic. It’s like trudging through knee-high mud, though, what with the doubling of the yarn and all. Hopefully I’ll have more to report later.
Feeling a bit overwhelmed this morning with everything I need/want to do. I have to shop and prepare for Thanksgiving, get Christmas shopping and planning and creating going, and, oh yeah, work. I have major time management issues. I think Pee Wee sums it up perfectly (wav courtesy of Karen!).

candy-colored clown

This attraction to all things orange and pink, as well as the pajama bottoms I sewed for my mother today, is making me wonder if perhaps I was a clown in a past life?
pj bottoms.JPG
Not much progress to report on my candy-colored Bucket o’ Chic, I’m afraid. I am loving the colors together, but it’s not very furry, since I am using Crystal Palace Fizz, which is fizzy, not furry. But if you want candy-colored furry, check out Silvia’s completed Bucket o’ Chic! Tres chic, non? And look, she bought one of the Chemo Megan shirts, and it looks GREAT! Thanks, Silvia!
On to other things pink, those pink hoodies by Isaac Mizrahi are on sale at Target this week for $16.99!!! If anyone happens by a Target and finds a pink one in small, um, can you pick one up for me? I guess that’s kind of a crazy thing to ask, and what if I end up with a dozen of them? Heh, yeah, right.

not about sewing

Today was supposed to be all about sewing, but I ended up having to do some work instead. All was not lost, however, as I made a little field trip to Target and found these irresistible goodies:
target plates.jpg
How cute are they?!? And they had two additional designs, too! I had to stare at them for a long time to decide between the salad plates and the soup bowls. I opted for the soup bowls, since they can be used for salad AND soup or pasta. Some other fun stuff at Target included a red tinsel Christmas tree (just like the one I got from Chiasso last year for twice the price!) and the pink angora Isaac Mizrahi hoodie (that I would have purchased had my size been in stock. Grrr).
And, drumroll please, my order from ThreadBear arrived!!

I cannot say enough about their great customer service and excellent prices. Now I can get started on the Bucket o’ Chic! The colors look a little weird, I know, but I think it will work, especially in my reality of bizarre color combinations. I am SO in love with the Fizz colors. It looks like candy, and I want to devour it!

blue hair

Chunky yarn knits up quickly! I started this hat last night and finished tonight:
chunky blue hat.JPG
It’s made with Gedifra Gigante, and I used size 15 (10 mm) needles! Kind of awkward to handle. Peter wanted to know if I was planning to wear the hat in public. Hmph.
Played with the Hedster this morning, and she gave me this miniature sweater that she knit:

Isn’t it adorable?
I’m off the sugar hiatus, thank goodness! Last night I made rice krispy treats with peanut butter and chocolate chips, and right now I’m baking snickerdoodles (Peter has to take them to work). I did learn from the whole sugar sensitivity thing, though, and I’ve decided to take it easy on the sweet treats when I am on the verge of getting a headache.

cake topping

I finished the orange cap I started the other day, but, um, it doesn’t really look like any of the hats in the Vogue Knitting! I was unable to get a normal angle on the hat as my photographer was at a city council meeting. Here’s the general idea:
crazy hat.JPG
I think I will send it to Megan, since she needs more hats.
I barely survived the 25 hours with no sugar. I messed up, though. I wasn’t supposed to use toothpaste, since it has some sort of sugar stuff in it, but I totally forgot. It was DREADFUL going without sugar and its relatives, mostly because I was not prepared and didn’t have veggies or meats and other allowed foods. My head still kind of hurts, and I don’t feel 100 percent. Maybe I have a touch of the flu (egads, that is what my father says on a DAILY BASIS).

oh, sugar sugar!

I went to an acupuncture/acupressure person today regarding my migraines. She did some sort of muscle testing thing and determined that yes, there’s something wrong with my head (heh heh), and that I have a sensitivity to sugar. She instructed me to avoid sugar in any form for 25 hours. What?!? I CONSUME NOTHING BUT SUGAR. I can’t have milk, bread, yogurt, fruit, candy (duh), any sauces with sugars, ack, nothing! I was really hard pressed to find anything suitable for dinner. I ended up eating pasta with olive oil and garlic. It may sound good, but it was rather bland. Sigh. At least the session felt good: she did some shiatsu on my neck and upper back, then stuck me with needles. I go back next week.

suckered in

I like Bonne Marie’s bucket o’ chic, and I like furry eyelash yarn, so how could I NOT join Becky, Silvia, Claudia, Kerrie, and others in knitting up a winter bucket o’ chic? I decided to go with candy colors, so I’m going to use Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride in Pepto Bismol pink and Crystal Palace Fizz in a lovely combo of pink, orange, yellow, and lime green. I called up ThreadBear to order, and talk about amazing customer service! The thing that freaked me out was when I said my name was Mariko, and Mr. ThreadBear (must have been Rob, since he said Matt was at the post office!) said, “Oh, Super Eggplant!” What a small world! I can’t wait to get my yarn, nor can I wait to order more great yarns from them.
In the meantime, I am knitting a hat from a Vogue Knitting from winter 1992. Yup, 1992. I’m using cheap plastic yarn. Here’s what I knit up last night:
