I got a little chocolate surprise from the poncho-stylin’ Maggi the other day:
How cute are these Chick Chocolates? There are two bite-size pieces per package, and no, they didn’t last long! Merci, Maggi!

I did not turn on my computer once this weekend! Saturday I attended and helped out at a friend’s daughter’s wedding, so I was only home for a couple of hours (I helped in the morning, the ceremony was in the afternoon, and the reception was in the evening). It was a beautiful wedding and went off without a hitch. One interesting part of the wedding was the Lithuanian wedding cake, also known as the “horny cake.” You can see why (the cheesecake is for those who like their pastries without spikey protrusions):
I didn’t taste it myself, but one guy I asked said it was not terribly delicious. It was shipped from the midwest somewhere and arrived entombed in bubble wrap. I imagine it’s like hardtack with icing.
So Sunday I went up to San Jose for the Desert Dance Festival, a belly dancing festival. Ha ha! Yes indeed! It was not as huge as I had anticipated, but it was still very interesting. There were many vendors selling all sorts of shiny things, and dancers shaking their appendages off on stage. The great thing was cancer-killing Megan came along with her friend Cynthia, who is a belly dancer. When Megan walked up to me, I didn’t recognize her right off because of her chemo curls. I have known Megan for over 20 years, and she has always had straight, fine hair. Now she has curls. You might be able to tell if she weren’t making a silly face here during our nice, leisurely lunch at Il Fornaio:
And here’s Cynthia “trying on” a costume:
It was a long day, but you only live once, right?
I know it is not yet October, but lately I have been all fidgety with thoughts of Halloween. I even had to go to two stores yesterday to see if they had Halloween candy, and today I went to another store to check. So far I haven’t seen anything very interesting except for orange-colored Kit Kat bars (I picked up the bag but didn’t buy it because they wanted $3.19 for a little bag. Highway robbery!). All I bought were these:
Yup, peanut butter and chocolate wafers, bursting with hydrogenated oils (this is why I have mixed feelings about nutritional labels and ingredient lists). These are from Palmer, the company that makes Twin Bings!
What I have been fantasizing about are treat-sized Nerds Rope. Wouldn’t that be great? Unfortunately, I don’t think they exist. I have seen mini boxes of Nerds, but no Nerds Rope.
Have you seen any interesting Halloween goodies out there yet? Do tell.
I kind of like the idea of uniforms–no muss, no fuss, no brain activity required. My uniform of choice is of the T-shirt and shorts variety, so you can imagine the problems I encounter when I have to dress nicely. Well, I decided I needed a “nice occasion” uniform, so I got some black fabric off of ebay, dug out an old Vogue pattern (Calvin Klein design), and got to work on my new sewing machine. Here’s the result:
Would it surprise you to know that I don’t like plain checks? Bah! So boring! I usually order my checks from Rosencrantz & Gildenstern. I have also ordered some Shag checks. Lately, though, I have been ordering checks from those nasty mass-market check printers that always advertise in the coupon section in the Sunday newspaper (gotta see the latest plush footies or polyester culottes by Blair, after all). Last time I got classic Barbie, and right now we have Curious George. Imagine my excitement, though, when I saw these from Checks in the Mail:

Well, helloooooo, kitty! The only problem is Peter & I have only one checking account, and while I generally hoard the checkbook, sometimes he needs to use it. Going to hardware stores or lumberyards and being forced to write Barbie checks is rather distressing for him. If I order Hello Kitty checks, I think it will push him over the edge (but I might do it anyway. Heh heh).
Gougeres are my favorite appetizer as of late. I mean, how can you go wrong with a cheesy little bite-sized puff?
Hey all you pop, soda, coke, kako, tonic drinkers! Mary brought up jimmies, and I adore jimmies, so I thought I should talk about how wonderful they are.
Do you say soda or pop? I think I generally say soda nowadays, but when I was a kid, I think I said pop. People in Portland say pop, I guess. Anyway, I went to that nut house place that has all the old-time regional candies. They also have old-time regional sodas! I got a few to try:
I didn’t get a chance to try the huckleberry one. The others were very sweet, as you can probably guess. I think Weinhard’s orange cream soda is tastier than the one in the photo. It’d be fun to do an orange cream soda taste test …
In knitting news, I finished the back of the simple Gash cardie (I decided to call it Gash since the color reminds me of that Urban Decay lipstick color). It’s going very quickly because it’s knit on US10 needles, and it’s a loosey goosey gauge. The gauge didn’t seem that loose when I swatched at the store, but I guess this is how it is. Any tighter and it would probably be too hot (it’s a silk and mohair blend). You can’t really tell here, but the stuff GLOWS:
I’ve been sewing a bit on my new machine, but I haven’t done anything beyond a straight stitch! This weekend I made this little reversible tote. Here are the two sides:
I watched that new Hawaii show last night just to see what my brother had been complaining about (he saw it early this summer as part of some special preview or something). It was pretty bad. They tried to incorporate all this “Japanese lore” into the storyline, and I’m not sure if any of it was true. Also, the people who were supposedly Japanese? They didn’t look remotely Japanese to me! The only person who did was the captain guy. Anyway, that show is supposed to be on at the same time as Lost, which has a weird-souding premise that reminds me of that creepy island in Life of Pi.
Yesterday Peter brought home a paper bag and handed it to me. Guess what was inside?
I nearly hyperventilated. Can you BELIEVE it? I’ve been wanting to try Valomilks for a while now! He got these at a little nut house/barbecue place* a few blocks from the high school. I had heard that this place sold a bunch of interesting candies, but the rumors were from not-so-reliable sources, so I never checked into them. You can probably guess that visiting this store is on my agenda for the coming week. (The Cherry Mash? Not so delicious.)
*Trivia: the nut house used to be a wine tasting place owned by Alex Trebeck of Jeopardy fame.
