Suckered by cool packaging

Saturday Hedi took a finishing techiques class at the Braid Box, a yarn shop in Saratoga, CA, so I went up with her to goof around. I had enough time to go to Mitsuwa Market, a Japanese supermarket in San Jose. It was heavenly walking down aisle after aisle of ethnic foods! I was quite parched by then, so I decided to get a beverage. In Japan, they have many, many different kinds of canned and bottled tea. I was just going to get some sort of green (well, it’s actually brown) tea, but then I saw this: japanese tea.jpg
Okay, how cool is that bottle? It is a sleek aluminum bottle of Tea Soda! I should have been scared off by the “orange sugar” ingredient, but I wasn’t. As you can probably guess, the beverage itself was quite disgusting, but hey, the bottle is still neato.

calling the bobble patrol

So, I made the design in my smooch ripoff tank (henceforth to be known as the Throw Caution to the Wind Tank). It is a bit goofy, what with all the giant bobbles, but I like bobbles!
bobbles.jpg
If the margins here look all goofy, it’s because my brother is futzing with them. You’d THINK he would FIX them rather than just leaving them looking all crazy, but he did not.
We had some maintenance work done on the car this week. We took it to Frank’s Auto Repair. The guy known as Frank is actually named Francisco. He has a mechanic there whose name is Gerardo, but he goes by Tony. Gerardo. Tony. Hee hee hee.

I gotta get me some velcro!

I’ve been meaning to make a little case for our (evil) cell phone but didn’t get around to it … until today! Tadaaa! cell phone case.jpg
I scrounged up some old quilted fabric I got in Japan years ago (but I still love Anpanman) and whipped it out. I made a buttonhole for the obtrusive antenna. Now I just need some velcro for the flap.
Last night I started on my Smooch rip-off tank. I know I’m probably setting myself up for disaster by making up the pattern as I go along, but there’s only so much math my brain can do at once! The real Smooch is not knit in the round, but hey, I’m doing it in the round! The gauge of my yarn, Lion Brand Cotton-Ease, is probably different, too, but so what! My math calculations for casting on for the loopy, picot-ish hem were only off by like 2 stitches. I was very surprised. I thought for SURE I would mess that one up, especially since I had to cast on 281 stitches. You read correctly there–281. It took a long time! But, as you can see, it looks decent enough (I am not so particular, unfortunately): smooch ripoff.jpg (sorry for the annoying glare spot).
I was going to do the chevron & eyelet pattern that knitting bloggers have referred to (bloggers knitting the REAL Smooch), but I decided that I shouldn’t plagiarize so completely, so I am going to attempt some other pattern, taken from this book I got in Japan long ago: japn knitting book.jpg
It contains patterns for 500 different designs. It has diagrams and symbols (well, and some Japanese, but I can only read a few words). Many of the patterns I cannot decipher. The one I’m planning to use has a bobble that employs a crochet hook. I tried to do it before but couldn’t figure it out. I guess if I can’t figure out this particular bobble, I can resort to the standard bobble. We’ll see what happens! Sometimes it’s good to break out of one’s comfort zone, wouldn’t you agree?

this and that

Well, there is just SO MUCH to knit and do! I swatched the Phildar Falaise and am fascinated by it. It is springy (i.e., it has elasticity). I used 4mm needles (okay, so it says 3.9mm on my Japanese gauge thingy), and it knit up very tightly, so I thought I would need to use a slightly larger needle. When I took the gauge, though, it was just as described on the label! What a surprise! I NEVER get the stated gauge. Never. Jamais. Nope.
BUT, before I begin the Becky Wannabe Sweater, I am thinking of knitting a tank. I bought Bonne Marie’s ChicKami pattern today, but I am not exactly a strappy tank kind of gal. I just wanted to see how it was constructed so that I could maybe use the waist shaping for a Smooch ripoff. I like the look of Smooch, but the neckline plunges too deeply for my taste, and the pattern book is pretty expensive, so I think I’m going to just make up my own pattern (I know, I’m scared, too). I am not very spacially oriented, and my knitting skills seem to be worsening with age, but hey, why not, I say! Throw caution to the wind!
On a completely different note, the other day I wandered around KMart and found some colored magnets in the shape of pushpins. They are similar to those very groovy Magnutz, but much cheaper! Here is a side-by-side comparison (KMart one on the left. The Magnutz one is stylishly streamlined, as you can see):

The photo leaves much to be desired (I need a new camera, but that is another issue … ). But anyway, I thought that was a fun discovery.
I am working on a gallery of completed projects, so stay tuned, all 2 of you out there!

It’s my falaisure

Yay, my Phildar Falaise yarn arrived today from Canada!
falaise.jpg
Phildar yarns seem to be very difficult to locate in the US. A quick search led me to Aunt Debbie’s in Chillwack, BC, and a quick call secured my yarn! I just need to wait for the pattern to arrive from Becky, and then I’m good to go. The sweater I am going to make is Phildar 366, otherwise known as the Becky Wanna-be Sweater by a bunch of online knitters.
Dede went to the vet today for her annual check-up. She was supposed to have two vaccination shots, but the vet and I discussed my concerns about overvaccination of animals, and we agreed to put Dede on the 3-year plan. Yay for Deedle! She was very, very good, and she did not growl or try to eat the vet’s head today (yes, she’s tried before).

sitting on the boat

Today we went and sat on the boat. We didn’t go sailing because a) Peter forgot the jib at home, b) I get seasick, and just sitting on the boat in the water was enough of a challenge for one day, and most importantly, c) it was blowing 25 knots out past the breakwater. So, we ate sandwiches and CheezIts in a tasty new Cheddar/Jack combo flavor and sat on the boat. It was pretty warm, and I probably should have put sunscreen on my legs. Here’s Peter:
peter boat.jpg
Afterwards we went to Michael’s so I could get some more Lion Brand Cotton-Ease yarn. We went to the Dollar Tree next door, and I got some tangy, wild berry-flavored Dots, but they were quite disappointing, and I threw them away. Weird flavors, weird texture.
And now I am very, very sleepy, but I have to study for my French lesson tomorrow. Mon dieu.

attack of the eggplant

My petite aubergine is not feeling very super.
nasubi attack.jpg
Something ATE THE TOP OFF OF IT. You probably can’t see where the stalks were severed, but geez, the thing was struggling to survive as it was. No Japanese eggplant for me this summer.
Am I the only idiot unable to figure out this reverse short row shaping method in knitting? I am trying to make socks using the toe-up method, and I swear I must have restarted about a dozen times. I think I finally figured it out, but one of the toes looks a little funky. Just goes to show you that just because you’ve been knitting a long time doesn’t mean you’re actually any good (which is why I wisely quite taking piano lessons at around age 16. I think I started at age 5, and I never improved).
I LOVE DAVID BYRNE. Just had to add that.

there is no excuse for poor design

Why can’t everything be cute? Is it really so difficult to make cute everyday items? Why are garbage cans and dish drainers and other utilitarian items usually so ugly? It’s just not fun! But this is why I get very excited when I do see cute things in places like Target. Check out these great CD-Rs by TDK that are sold at Target!
tdk cdrs.jpg
I think it’s a good sign! Maybe there will be more cool CD-Rs. Last year, on our trip to Japan, I found these super cool CD-Rs in Fukuoka: japan cdrs.jpg
I would have bought more, but we had to lug all our purchases back to my aunt’s on the train, so I had to control myself. I didn’t see others like these anywhere else in Japan (but I wasn’t frequenting electronics shops). I’m scared to use them because they are too nice.

knitting organization 101

I decided I needed to organize my knitting information! Up to now, I would usually complete a project then stuff the leftover yarn into a Rubbermaid and shove the pattern onto the bookshelf. The gauge I would scribble onto the pattern, but I usually neglected to note the size of the needles, the type of yarn, how much yarn the pattern required, etc. If only I had been more organized, I could have picked up some leftover yarn and zipped out another project without re-swatching!
This is the beginning of my new knitting organizer:

It’s not the perfect system yet, but hopefully I’ll stick with it and have something useful!

finally, some knitting content!

My button from MJ Trim finally arrived! Pete the UPS guy brought a tiny package containing one button. It’s a cool button in and of itself, but it sort of gets lost on SCC (sitcom chic sweater). And another thing–I was going to attach the button with some yarn, but the needle wouldn’t go through the button, so I had to use button thread, and it’s white. Yeah, talk about dorky.
I used the pattern for SCC version 1. There is a new version with skinnier arms. I think that would probably be a bit better. But anyway, voila!
