welcome to portland

This was the view from my desk yesterday:

rainy day portland.JPG
It POURED. I found out later that it was the rainiest day on record or something, so that made me feel a bit better.
I made it out to Kinokuniya with my mother, so I will be reporting on a couple of book acquisitions soon. I am still completely unorganized and not unpacked, and I haven’t knit a thing in WEEKS. Oy!

break out the fur pants

Well, the short-sleeve shirts are resting comfortably in a drawer, and the long sleeves and fur (i.e., polarfleece) pants are getting some usage. The move went pretty smoothly, and the glitches were few. The first glitch? We reserved a 24′ truck, but UHaul supposedly couldn’t find one, so we were stuck with a 17′ truck with a trailer!
I hired some “labor service” guys to help load the truck:

They were an immense help, but they dropped my Steelcase desk and broke off one of the legs. They also busted a knob on the washing machine!
Oh, empty house!

Here’s Peter’s dad finishing off the Manhattan Glacier pear caramel ice cream after a long day’s work:

Peter’s parents in front of our house. Bye, California!
I didn’t take any photos along the way, and I haven’t taken any photos of the new house, really. There’s much work to be done on it. It was built in 1920, and I think the previous owner lived here a LONG LONG time. More later!

landed but loopy

I only have three minutes to write, since the season premiere of Lost is being re-aired, and I want to see the first few minutes of it. I’ll have to write up a proper post of the move, but is that interesting to anybody? For now I leave you with a photo of little Deedle in our empty house in California:

new to me

I made a few discoveries today. First, I went to the new Jamba Juice and tried the Matcha Green Tea Blast.

today matcha jamba.JPG
I had heard mixed reviews of it, but I loved it! I think it is even tastier and possesses a stronger matcha flavor than the Starbucks matcha frappuccino.
Thus fortified, I headed to an evil giant box store to get some necessary supplies, necessary supplies such as this:
today poptart case.JPG

I also saw these, but I did not purchase them. I am curious about them, though. Has anyone out there tried them?
today donutz.JPG
That Willy Wonka! What will he think of next?
I have also, of course, been packing. I can’t even tell you how much time I spent trying to figure out the meaning of these instructions on the large mirror box I got from UHaul:
today mirror box.JPG
Granted, I am a bit on the spatially challenged side, but how hard can it be to assemble a simple box? I ended up calling close to a dozen (no exaggeration) UHaul stores for assembly advice, and nobody could help me except for the last guy, who explained how to put the box together. But, um, I could not visualize his instructions, so I just cut the tabs and taped it up like a regular box.
The computer gets packed up tomorrow. I’m not sure if I will have the opportunity or the fodder to blog, so if I don’t, I will report to you next from the great Pacific Northwest!

charitable causes

I got a message from my friend Lulu that her son was selling copies of his “fiction” for a buck to raise money to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. How could I resist?

dinosaur booklet.JPG
I really don’t know anything about dinosaurs, so I feel very fortunate to have received this. And hey, it’s for a good cause!
Packing continues. Of course, I also had to distract myself further by deciding to try downloading an audiobook for the very first time. I tried iTunes, but they have hidden their shopping carts, and I could not make a purchase to save my life. So then I went to audible.com and signed up for the trial offer. When trying to download, though, all I get are errors! Can anyone help? I went to the software page, and it said that you can download DownloadManager to import directly into iTunes and thus avoid installing Manager, so that’s what I did. When I try to download the book, though, it tells me I need Manager. Aiyaaa! I think I will just go eat some ice cream (Pear Caramel, to be exact).

move on

Somebody please put me out of my misery.

boxes.JPG
We had a bunch of crap in the attic, as you can see. I got the front bedroom and the hall closet packed today. I still have to finish the kitchen, pack the master bedroom, the bathroom, and my office. I can see the twinkle at the end of the tunnel, and that is what is keeping me going. It’s probably a good thing I am doing this by myself, though, because I am getting a bit whiny. My back hurts from bending. See? Whiny. At least I have plenty of ice cream for fuel (the pink cookies are gone, but hey, I did give a few to a neighbor). A week from now I will be in our new house!

lucky again

You know, some days I feel like the luckiest gal in the universe. Today was one of them, cuz look what the UPS man brought:

manhattan fruitier little ice cream.JPG
A friend just started an organic ice cream company, and dudes, he sent me ice cream! He sells it through Manhattan Fruitier, I guess. Below those cute little samplers were these:
manhattan fruitier pints.JPG
Yeah, when people talk about “going for a pint,” this is what I envision! These pints say Manhattan Glacier, but I think my friend’s company is called Three Bridges Ice Cream. You New Yorkers keep your eyes peeled for it!
Right now I am having the White Coffee little sampler, and it is so rich and smooth and creamy and delicious. Nice, true coffee flavor. I have a week to eat the two pints and all the little samplers. Do you think I will make it? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAAAAAA.

extraordinary ordinary

I love small discoveries and finding the hidden treasures among the mundane. I also have quite a sweet tooth. You can imagine, then, how intrigued I was when I read on Taste the World (a foodblog) about how great the pink frosted cookies at Ralph’s supermarket are. Supermarket cookies? I’m not a total food snob, but I do have SOME powers of reasoning, and I have found that supermarket pastries are usually pretty lame (and they probably singlehandedly keep the shortening industry in business). Well, next week I am moving to the land-of-no-Ralph’s, so today I remembered to look in the bakery section at Ralph’s for those cookies. There they were!

ralph cookies.JPG
The sisters at Taste the World are spot on. These cookies are “deliciously soft” as advertised, and they are tasty! Super delicious and beautiful! I don’t know how to explain it, but there is something very satisfying about them.
Another highlight of my grocery store outing? The Halloween candy is out!

three amigos

I got some packing done this weekend, but I’m afraid it’s not nearly enough. My goal was to get the kitchen packed, since that is the most time consuming (bubble wrapping the dishes and such. And hello, but who invented the tape gun? I swear it was designed to drive me batty. I’m surprised I haven’t taken off any skin yet). I had a little bit of help from Flo and Jos
