sofa vs couch vs davenport

I have a favor to ask those of you in the vicinity of a Room&Board furniture store. We’re thinking about ordering one of their couches–the Delancy 72″ (apartment size):

Photo stolen from Room&Board web site

The thing is, we don’t live near a Room&Board, so I have no idea how comfy or nice this couch actually is. This is where the favor comes in. If anyone out there is willing to go and sit on one of these couches and report back to me, say, within the week, I would be very grateful, and I will send you a little goodie box (who said bribery is a bad thing?). Please contact me either by posting a comment or sending an e-mail, and I will reply. Also, I would appreciate any feedback or anecdotes about Room&Board and the quality of their furniture. MERCI BUCKETS.

dump cake

I just recently learned about this baking phenomenon known as the dump cake. A couple cans of pie filling, a box of cake mix, a bit of butter, and voila–dump cake. It sounds kind of disgusting, doesn’t it, but it is actually quite delicious! The great thing about it is the recipe just cries out for adaptation, so you can be as creative as you desire.

It resembles a cobbler. A little dab of ice cream alongside it, and you will be begging for more!
Read on for the recipe …

and drink your 8 glasses of water per day

Okay, so here’s the Noro sweater in progress. I don’t know if the colors are overly saturated in the photo? It’s #102, I think. It’s reds and oranges and pinks and purples with a wee bit of green and blue thrown in for good measure. I love it.

I am also hoping to start a cupcake hat soon. It will be, well, for me, okay! Yes, I’m middle aged, but why can’t I wear a cupcake hat! Besides, I’m in Portland, where anything goes. I ordered some fun yarn from elann that I hope works for the hat.
The title of this post refers to instructions given to me by the pharmacist when he handed me my prescription decongestant (I have a sinus infection). I did not heed his advice, and as a result, I blacked out in a Japanese restaurant last night as I tried to get to the door. Doesn’t that sound like something that would happen to Carolyn?

I keep forgetting to take a picture of my knitting

I’m loving the colors of the Noro Kureyon.
We’re getting unpacked very, very slowly, and poor Peter has so much work work to do that he can’t do home work (get it? Home work. HA HA). Urgh. But, we are enjoying being in Portland. This evening we went to a Korean bbq restaurant. We used to go to one in Japan that Peter loved. This one was pretty authentic, and we know next to nothing about Korean food and/or culture, so we had to get help on how to cook and eat the food.

Now I am really sleepy.

that’s print gocco to you

A couple months ago Thuy was trying to talk my wacko brother into getting me a Gocco screenprinting kit. It turned out that he HAD one. Yes, my brother, the ham radio and computer geek, had a Gocco (though you must refer to it as PRINT GOCCO or he will get annoyed, which means, of course, that I consistently call it GOCCO in his presence. Heh). He says everyone in Japan has one, and he lived in Japan for five years.

Well, it’s in my house now! HAHAHAHAHA. The only problem is the instructions are in Japanese, and my Japanese is not so excellent.

fun-filled weekend

Living in a big city means lots of choices for fun! Saturday I went to the grand opening of Pix Patisserie’s new location with Action Hero Melissa and my friend Wendy and her two girls:

I took a photo of my croissant and two pieces of chocolate, but the photo actually looked kind of obscene, so I decided to just delete the thing. But hey, here’s a great shot of Lillie enjoying her bubble gum-flavored cotton candy outside of Pix:

Her sister Paulina is not so thrilled by the cotton candy:

Then Sunday was the Portland Marathon. Action Hero Melissa was participating in it, so I went to cheer her on. My brother has volunteered at the marathon for years, so I tracked him down at mile 12. Right when I was giving him his coffee and pastry, Melissa and her friend Michelle went by! Poor Melissa trained her butt off but got injured, so she couldn’t really run. I saw her again at about mile 18 on the St. John’s Bridge, the prettiest bridge in Portland. Here’s the view from the bridge and a shot as I was driving over it:

I then somehow ended up going shopping with my brother. We both bought shoes at REI (and yes, Carolyn, my orthotics fit into them). I also briefly saw my parents. My mother is on medication because she had a wacko reaction to either her flu or pneumonia shot, and my father? Well, he tried to pawn off a rack for miniature souvenir spoons on me. When I declined his offer, he muttered something about “this crazy family.” Ummmm, yeah.

sweet treats

Though things have been busy what with moving and unpacking and all, I have managed to keep a few of my priorities straight. Specifically, I have been keeping my eyes peeled for fun sweet treats.
The day we unloaded the moving truck I snagged these:

limited edition candies.JPG
Limited edition candies! Woohoo! There’s the coffee-flavored Kit Kat, the caramel cappuccino Hershey’s bar, and the mocha almond Hershey’s. To be honest, I don’t really remember how they were. I think the Kit Kat was pretty tasty. Maybe I will have to try them again.
I have had other treats, but I neglected to take photos. One place I have to mention is Sahagun Chocolates. Ohmyword. I had read about how wonderful Elizabeth Montes’ chocolates are, and it’s no lie. I got two little caramel cups for Peter and a jasmine something or other for me. Complex, powerful, and interesting flavors. Yum.

Blogging by Mail 2

The very first package I received at our new house was from my Blogging by Mail buddy Amy! Blogging by Mail is a food swap of sorts. You send someone regional treats, something homebaked, food you like, that sort of thing. This round was hosted by Samantha.
I totally scored on this round, because I received regional goodies from the Gulf Coast of Florida! Woohoo!

blogging by mail goodies.JPG
There’s beignet mix from the famous Cafe du Monde in New Orleans, Vidalia Onion Dressing, Zapp’s cajun potato chips, and orange sugared pecans. Delicious!
Round 3 of Blogging by Mail is open now, and you can sign up here! Do I have enough exclamation points in this post?!!?

Japanese craft books 20 minutes away

I went to Kinokuniya the other day with my mother. I had to feign calmness so she wouldn’t think I was completely out of my gourd. I didn’t have much time to browse, but I did manage to snag a couple of books.
This one is all about T-shirts! I happen to have a thing about T-shirts, so I was pretty excited to find this:

japan tshirt book.JPG
The translation of the title is “I love T-shirts.” It appears to be a T-shirt catalog of sorts. Sigh. Here are some shots from the book:
japan tshirt book cars.JPG japan tshirt book orange.JPG japan tshirt book dog.JPG
ISBN is 4-07-247054-6
The other book I got is Simple Chic, a sewing book by Machiko Kayaki. I have one of her skirt books, and I love it! The subtitle of this one is “Dress Up, Dress Down.” Cute, huh.

And some shots from the book:

I love that green dress. I don’t know that I’d have occasion to wear it, but I might need to make it anyway. Maybe I’ll wear it while walking Deedle. The ISBN is 4-579-10961-9.

those wacky japanese

Sunday I spent the entire day unpacking the kitchen. The kitchen is, well, funky, so I ended up leaving most items packed and stored in the basement. We still have quite a few boxes to unpack, but at least this house is bigger, so we can just cram boxes into a spare room and forget about them for a bit.
Anyway, you can probably imagine that I have had no time to knit or crochet or sew or do much of anything. I don’t even remember the last time I picked up knitting needles! Isn’t that terrible? I have, however, managed to shop a bit and discovered some quirky little items to share with you.
Exhibit A:

toothpaste.JPG
I was at Nordstrom the other day and saw a big rack of tiny tubes of oddly flavored toothpaste. Can you GUESS what country these are from? Yes, they are from my people. I got grapefruit, powdered green tea (cuz they had more than one flavor of green tea, ya know), and Darjeeling tea. They had quite a few flavors, including pumpkin pudding and some curry flavor. That sounds really gross to me, but hey, I guess if you REALLY like curry …
