bug killa

We have to have our house tented for termites, which means we will be out of town for the rest of the week while the pest killers gas our house and annihilate every living organism. I find this rather distressing, but I suppose it is preferable to our house crumbling around us. It was a lot more work prepping the house for the tenting than I had anticipated. It looks like we are moving!

We’re supposed to double-bag the food in these special plastic bags, but we ended up taking most of the food to our neighbor’s. Thank goodness for nice neighbors.
So, we’re off to Santa Barbara, the land of no pants (not as in pantless but as in the weather is so perfect you can wear shorts all the time), for the week. Our ridiculously overpriced hotel promises to have wifi, so I will try to blog. Okay, now I must go eat some ice cream (hey, not all of it would fit into the neighbor’s freezer).

what’s cookin’

When I was up in the Bay Area, I went to Kinokuniya in Japantown to peruse the Japanese craft books. That section was pretty well picked over, but I went down another aisle and a new section was unveiled to me: the food books. Aiyaaaa! Hold me back!
Here’s one book I got. It’s a petite book all about SNACKS, and the author is named Mariko.

It has very nice drawings and photos, as you can see:

The ISBN is 4-396-41073-5.
The other book is all about fluffy snacks:

Here are a few pages:

The ISBN is 4-579-20937-0
I leave you with this photo of Megan and me that Thuy took. We were having refreshments at the cute little tea shop next to Kinokuniya. Megan got an iced cocoa, Thuy had the matcha float, and I had a pot of Darjeeling. Megan looks to be eyeing Thuy’s float, doesn’t she? This photo was taken before Megan cut my hair. I now sport a sort of shaggy mullet.

back from sf

Well, I made it back from San Francisco, but I’m sorry to say I took pathetically few photos! I had a great time, though, and got to see lots of people. Unfortunately, those people did not include Rachael or Becca, though I did see Rachael’s flaming hair and had the opportunity to yell at her as I ran by. Yes, so running. The race was fine and relatively fun, if you consider running all squished with 15,000 people when it’s still dark out fun!
What were some other highlights? Well, take a look:
sf coffee crunch cake.JPG sf coffee crunch slice.JPG
That’s the coffee crunch cake from Yasukochi’s Sweet Stop Bakery in Japantown. We stumbled upon the bakery when we went in search of bentos. It was delicious!
And my first ever mani-pedi was delightful. Megan and I went to Lavande Nail Spa. I was pretty surprised by how busy the place was. I had no idea that nail stuff was so popular. I guess I need to get out more often. Here are my toes:

sf pedicure.JPG

I also got to meet up with Mrs. H and her gang. Here’s the gang minus Mrs. H, who wandered off to take a photo of a tall Russian ship:
sf harrises.JPG

That’s Megan on the left! There is a rather famous person in this photo, but in order to protect her stellar reputation, I don’t think I should identify her (I don’t think her listeners know how silly she can be).
What else? Oh, I discovered a whole new world of Japanese books at Kinokuniya, but I will wait until tomorrow to share those. I will leave you with my big splurge, courtesy of Artfibers:

gone running

I’m headed up to the Bay Area Saturday for several days of fun and adventure! Sunday morning, bright and early (actually, is it even light out at 5am?), I will be participating in the San Francisco Half-Marathon with Rachael, Joanna, and Becca, to name but a few. It finishes at Spreckels Lake in Golden Gate Park. If anyone out there wants to meet afterwards, how about we try to meet by the, say, NW side of the lake? Sort of? Well, maybe we will just recognize one another.
I won’t be back until Wednesday, so no blogging until then, most likely. I will be too busy chasing around town and getting my first ever mani-pedi (with Megan). See y’all later!
I leave you with a photo of one of our water pipes that Peter just replaced. It’s nice to be married to a handy person!

oh, mother

A few years ago, I learned how to make my own red wine vinegar. Sadly, I only made one batch. The second batch has been sitting in a cupboard since, well, if the note on the container is correct, September 2003. It must be a lie. At any rate, I haven’t done anything with the vinegar. I took the jar out of the cupboard to decide what to do with it, and boy was I surprised when I discovered that the mother, a gelatinous glop of bacteria and yeast that feeds the vinegar, had taken over the whole jar! Barely any liquid remains in the container!

Smothering mother

Peter still wants to siphon off the vinegar and use it, but I am a little frightened. So, anyone out there want some mother?

dangerous ideas

Have you all checked out zazzle yet? It’s a site that lets you “design” your own T-shirts and other goodies. It’s actually a bit friendlier to use than CafePress, because zazzle lets you manipulate images and text more easily. Anyway, I made a little supereggplant design, and though I wasn’t all that satisfied with it or the selection of shirt types, I impulsively ordered one, just because I could.

zazzle shirt.JPG

It came lickety split. You can’t really tell, but that is a lime-colored shirt. It is an oddly shaped shirt. It is skinny (baby doll style), but it is LONG. The thing is like a tube. Here’s hoping it shrinks to a reasonable length!

blogging by mail

Though this is primarily a crafty-ish blog (heavy on the ish), sometimes it likes to pretend it is a food blog. Okay, so the truth is I like to read food blogs and fantasize about being able to cook like the foodbloggers! When Nic of bakingsheet came up with her blogging by mail idea, I had to jump in. It is basically a swap of homebaked goodies or edible treats. YUM.
Look how great a hostess Nic is. SHE SENT THE PARTICIPANTS TREATS:

baking sheet biscotti.JPG

I got chocolate-cherry biscotti and some hot cocoa to wash it down. YUMMY.
And Jessica sent me these goodies!
blogging by mail.JPG

Yummy homebaked green tea biscotti and lots of CANDY.
And what did I send my swappee? I decided to make marshmallows, since it is WAY too hot to turn on the oven, and I wanted to make something that would keep on the journey to Canada. I added some cocoa, and darn if these weren’t pretty tasty little chocolate marshmallows:

ice cream party

Well, today was the day of the ice cream block party that I won from Dreyer’s. We had planned on having it at 3pm, but it was pretty darn hot, and Peter thought people would pass out on the way to the party, so we postponed it until 7pm. It was perfect at 7pm! We had a nice turnout, but unfortunately I didn’t get many photos, because I insisted on serving everyone their ice cream (okay, I was being a little bit of a control freak).
Here’s part of the group:

And the table with the toppings:

I thought I was going to have carpal tunnel from scooping up all the ice cream, but that Dreyer’s Slow Churned stuff is pretty soft, so it was easy to scoop! We had lots of different flavors (12, to be exact), and the most popular? Orange ‘n Cream! The Slow Churned ice cream is low fat, but it is really quite tasty (and no, they didn’t pay me to say that). Okay, I have to go put some stuff on my mosquito bites now (and maybe have some more ice cream).

snappy coin purse

I ordered some coin purse frames from Sarah1980, and they flew here from Australia! They are pretty quick to put together, but I think there is a definite technique to getting the frame onto the fabric; I don’t quite have the knack just yet, but I think the coin purse came out okay, and it’s so much fun opening and closing the clasp!
