and once again it’s all about candy

Yesterday I found these:

Seasonal candies rock my world.
Today’s field trip took Mrs. H and me out to the hinterlands where Fabric Depot is located. How I love that place. I restrained myself and only purchased two spools of hot pink Wooly Nylon serger thread and some buttons. I have mentioned before how they sell a bunch of Dutch foods there, right? Apparently the owner is Dutch, so he imports stuff from his homeland. I snuck this photo:
fab depot candy.jpg
Can you see all the varieties of chocolate sprinkles on the shelf near the bottom?
And one of the best things of all that I found there:
grapefruit mentos.jpg
GRAPEFRUIT MENTOS. It’s a limited edition flavor! The bad part? I only bought one measly roll because I didn’t know how delicious they were going to be.

Ohhhhhhh, portland!

I am surprised I can still walk after our Invasion of NW Portland yesterday. Mrs. H arrived at my house just before 10am, and I didn’t get home until 4pm. We covered some ground! I can’t even remember all the places we went.
The first place we visited was Rose City Textiles. RCT specializes in outdoor fabric, and there is so much of it that it is really quite overwhelming. Annette, who manages the storefront, is very knowledgeable and helpful and very enthusiastic, so she makes you just want to buy everything in the store. Check out just one little corner of the polarfleece section (I think I showed a similar photo from my last trip there, but what can I say, I find polarfleece to be photogenic):
rct.jpg
I know, CRAZY. Mrs. H and I both ended up buying a bunch of fabric, which probably wasn’t the smartest thing, since we had to lug it around for the rest of the day.
LARGE TEXT SECTION AHEAD (sorry I didn’t take more photos):
[I’m not going to include links here because I am feeling too lazy to look them all up.] Okay, so then we wandered around 23rd Avenue, which is crammed full of boutiques and such, before heading down into the Pearl District. We stopped at KnitKnot studio, a cute little yarn shop, then headed to Anthropologie, Whole Foods (where we got samples of cheese and bread), Peet’s Coffee, then stopped at Mio Gelato for a lunch of … gelato!! I had grapefruit (mmmmmm) and Mrs. H had blackberry. We popped into Powell’s for a minute then went to Daisy Kingdom, which is going out of business and having a giant sale. After that we went to a great decorator fabric store, the Whole 9 Yards, and an amazing paper goods store, Oblation Papers, which made me REALLY want my own letterpress setup (as opposed to just wanting one before). I think our last stop was Lint, a great yarn store that always has a big bowl of candy at the front counter.
Here’s the one skein of yarn I got at Lint plus the fabrics I acquired at RCT:
rct fab.jpg
The brightly colored ones are lycra (well, the cartoon one isn’t really lycra, because it’s not stretchy) and will most likely become running tops and/or tights. The black stuff on the right is exo skin, this amazing high tech fabric that feels rubbery on one side and fleecy on the other. I’m going to make Peter a rash guard (a surfing thing, not something for strange rashes) out of it. I think I have to go back to get the wasabi color so I can make myself a little jacket. The yarn is Marvelous Mohair by Steadfast Fibers in Bonners Ferry, ID. It’s going to be the grass for the mohair vest with flowers from Girly Knits, a Japanese knitting magazine.
Okay, the day wasn’t over yet! Yesterday evening my friend Taya and I went to Powell’s Books for Cooks to hear Christopher Kimball, the editor of Cook’s Illustrated. He was very charming and funny and yes, sporting a bowtie! Afterwards we had dinner at a great Lebanese restaurant.

jackpot!

Today was my first full day in Portland, and I pretty much did nothing. I did manage to go for a run before it started raining, and it’s really great to run under a canopy of trees. Ahhh, the trees! Anyway, Mrs. H and I are going to wander around the neighborhood tomorrow, so perhaps I will have something to report. In the meantime, here’s a candy report. Thanks to Mia in Maryland, I “came home” to some Jackpot candy:

It has coconut in it, and I actually do not care for coconut, so I made my crazy brother try it first (it was Mia’s idea, honest!):

It might not look like it, but he liked it.

pouches head to portland

I have plenty of mini totes, but sometimes you need a little drawstring satchel for those little knitting projects, especially if you’re going to put the satchel within another bag (because who wants a handled mini tote within a handled maxi tote?). This satchel and I are headed to Portland today:

matryoshka

My mother left for Japan today, which means I will soon head up to Portland to, you know, be with my father. SERENITY NOW. Anyway, he and my brother had a discussion and decided they were in agreement that I am “a pain in the ass,” so I figure I am going to try to live up to their ideals. Ha ha ha! Watch out!
My father will undoubtedly ask me as soon as I enter the house, “Did you bring me a present?” It doesn’t really matter what it is as long as he gets something. Food isn’t always good, because he usually squirrels it away in his room, and the ants inevitably find it. So today when I was out running errands I found this:
matroshka.JPG
Matryoshka, also known as “Russian nesting dolls” and also on my list of best-ever inventions. This is supposedly the Nutcracker. Whatever. He will like it. I also found these giant tubes of Rowntree’s Fruit Pastilles, yet another tasty candy from abroad. (Re: the Smarties. Is it me, or do they have a donut aftertaste?)
For those of you searching for knitting content, yes, I’m knitting, but I’m knitting something that is a secret swap thing, so I can’t show it to you, and it’s also been one of those weeks where I fall fast asleep in front of the TV, so progress has been slow. I did start the Ribby Cardi, but you don’t really want to see 1″ of ribbing, do you? Wouldn’t you rather see giant tubes of candy and matryoshka?

international desk day

Hey, so today is International Desk Day, which means, I think, that we’re supposed to take photos of our desks and post them. IDD is courtesy of Tania, a very talented illustrator who sells cute bird stuff. I mean, just check out her little silk screened birdie pouches!
Okay, so here’s my desk. Can you tell I live here, and that I am a pig? Am I revealing too much personal information here? Eh, whatever, it’s all in the spirit of International Desk Day!

sharpie love

My brother told me I had to post something to see if his computer works (he moved stuff around or something), so here it is. Anyway, who doesn’t love Sharpies? They are definitely on my list of best-ever inventions, and they keep improving! Hello PASTEL Sharpies and RETRACTABLE Sharpies:

A pink Sharpie. It just doesn’t get much better than that.

ritter sport

My one major regret from my last trip to Portland was that I passed up the Ritter Sport chocolate bar with cornflakes. I keep kicking myself for doing that, and I had every intention of going back to the German deli on my next trip and getting a bar. Well, no need now, because my friend Wendy (mother of Dr. Croissant) in Portland sent me a bar (plus a cute little baby square):
ritter.JPG
Woohoo! Isn’t it a happy chocolate bar? I will still probably try to go to the German deli, though, just so I can stare at the wall of chocolate.

ponchos for pooches

Lest you think I’m a terrible mother for not making Deedle a raincoat, here is a poncho blanket I made for her the other day:
poncho deedle 2.JPG
As you can see, I have a warped sense of the size of my dog’s head and neck. I made the blanket because Deedle gets cold very easily, and she shivers like a sad little pooch, and then she curls up into a tight little ball. She also turns around and around, so I figured the poncho blanket would keep her covered even when she thrashes about. The only problem is she can’t really get out of it, and if she walks, she steps on it and does a face plant. In other words, the poncho blanket can only be worn under strict supervision.

of pouches and gummi worms

Today I was going to sew Deedle a raincoat, but thinking about designing a pattern for her oddly shaped little dog body made my head hurt, so I sewed a little zippered pouch instead:
pouch.JPG pouch inside.JPG
Dude, check it out–it’s lined!
And your candy point for the day. Carrie sent me some goodies from Minnesota, including a seemingly innocuous bag of gummi worms (okay, gummi brite crawlers for you sticklers out there) by Fritzie Fresh.
gummi worms.JPG
These gummi worms are seriously addictive and superior to other gummi candies. I don’t really know what it is. They are not particularly sour, but they have this perfect little al dente bite to them, and just the right amount of crunchy sugar coating. I can’t stop eating them!
