a shameless plea for help

I’ve been wanting an iPod mini for a while, but I just can’t justify spending the money on it. Well, my brother just told me about a deal where you can get a free iPod, and it’s not a scam! Here’s where I need your help. It’s one of those deals where you sign up and take advantage of some offer or another. You then have to convince 5 of your closest friends (heh) to also sign up and complete one offer, and then you (in this case, I) get a free iPod! The offers include signing up for BMG Music, Columbia House DVDs, and various charge card and other “free trial” deals. I myself opted to spend $20 at PetCare RX (since I conveniently have a dog).
So, if you would be willing to help me by taking advantage of one of these offers at freeiPods, can you please leave a comment or send me an e-mail, and I will send you my “referral link” so you can sign up. Please note that the site only works with Internet Explorer (I know, totally fascist, but if The Man is willing to give me a free iPod, well, my ideals go out the window). Here is what I can offer in return for your help: I can be a referral for you if you choose to take advantage of the offer yourself (but I can’t do this for everyone, unfortunately), OR I can send you some candy or something. In addition, I will be forever in your debt, and you will feel my love for years to come. I need 4 referrals, please!

donuts

Let’s see, I’m just about up to the armholes on Stripes Go Round (there’s your knitting content), I finally set up my new sewing machine (and boy, is it ever fancy! It’s going to take me a while to move beyond the regular old straight stitch), and I beaded a little necklace:
donut necklace.JPG
Yup, it’s a box o’ donuts! Donuts are near and dear to my heart. Back in the day, I had a dream of opening my own donut shop. It was going to be called Marcie’s Donuts, and I was going to legally change my name to Marcie Donut. My friend Leigh Ann was Lulu Eclair (which is why I call her Lulu), and my friend Beth was Betty Glazed. DOOOOOOOO-nuts. Sigh.
Warning: Olympics ramblings ahead
Hey, did any of you catch the Olympic women’s marathon this morning? It was incredible. I tried to knit, but I was too nervous (those stitches would have been super tight!). I wasn’t rooting for anyone in particular, really, though I did kind of want Paula Radcliffe to do well. She is one tough nut, and she is, of course, an amazing runner. I really felt for her when she just stopped in her tracks with just over 3 miles to go. For us pokey pokes, knowing you only have 3 miles to go is great, since you know that even if you break your leg or something, you can still crawl to the finish. But for world-class marathoners like Paula, knowing you can just finish isn’t enough.
Anyway, when the little Japanese gal took off, I wondered if someone was going to catch her. I got increasingly nervous about it as she maintained her lead mile after mile. By the last several miles, I really wanted her to win (though I do really admire Catherine Ndereba, too, who was chasing her). I was very excited when she crossed that finish line and won the gold! Go Japan!
And let’s talk about the bronze medal for a moment. American marathoners have not done well in the last decade. Not since Joan Benoit Samuelson won the gold in the first Olympic women’s marathon has an American even medaled. I don’t think any Americans were expected to medal this year, either, but Deena Kantor proved them wrong. At one point she was 18th, but she just steadily moved up, picking runners off one by one. She looked strong and steady throughout, and when she approached the finish line crying, well, it was something else. There was nary a dry eye in the house (never mind that I was in the house by myself). What a great race, and what inspirational women!

fred flare rocks

I just wanted to say that I now have more reason to love Fred Flare. I’ve always liked their merchandise, but who knew they were a great company to boot? I participated in Pinku‘s pink earring exchange earlier this summer, and apparently the people at Fred Flare thought that was so great they offered to send each participant a pair of earrings! I got mine the other day:

Okay, now for a random, non-knitting-related rant: Today I read that they are going forward with making Memoirs of a Geisha into a film, and that they cast two Chinese actresses in the roles. While I don’t really really object to that, it annoys me somewhat, because there are many differences between China and Japan, and hello, geisha are from JAPAN. What is up with this interchangeability of Asians? I guess I should be more annoyed about the book itself, a fictitious account written by a white male (not that I am completely against white males writing about different cultures, but you know what I mean). I did read the book, and I have to admit there weren’t that many instances where I wanted to hurl the book across the room, but still, the whole geisha/male fantasy thing is rather irksome. Okay, rant over. I’m going to go dig around for some chocolate now.

the new power tool

Here’s the new power tool I got for my birthday:
janome.JPG
It is the fanciest thing I’ve ever owned! Of course, I still haven’t plugged it in. It is very high tech compared to my trusty old 1970 Elna Super, so I need to read the instructions carefully before embarking on any sewing projects. I was very surprised when I received this gift, but I knew something was up, since Peter kept calling my brother, and he NEVER calls my brother, unless he has some questions about lithium batteries or something. Also, he would call him then go outside, and afterwards he’d come back in and ask, “DID YOU HEAR ME?”
New candy discovery: Have any of you tried the Nerds Rope? It’s kind of disgusting, but I think it may be addictive. It’s like someone wet a long piece of red licorice and dropped it into a vat of Nerds. Peter discovered that if you twist it, it resembles a double helix. He refused, however, to taste it. Anyway, it’s kind of tasty, in a grody sort of way. I have also discovered that when I pick up sour Skittles in preparation to eat them, I automatically begin to salivate, and my tastebuds do that twinge thing that happens when you eat really sour things. Yeah, just like Pavlov’s dog.

blah blah and blah blah blah

Though I haven’t been knitting a whole lot, I thought I’d share my latest project. I’m working on Stripes Go Round from Interweave (spring? summer? 2004, anyway). I am using some Classic Elite Star that I got last year. It’s sproingy stuff, since it has 1% lycra in it. Here it is so far:
stripesgoround in progress.JPG
That green is the start of some random striping. I wasn’t sure I’d have quite enough of the burgundy/maroon/wine (that color description is just for Rachael), so I thought I’d incorporate some stripes, since it would be rather unpleasant to continue with one color only to run out at the very end. I usually don’t gravitate toward this maroon color, but I think it’ll be okay.
Okay, enough of that! If you feel like doing some shopping, here are a couple of ideas:
Action Hero Melissa is selling some of her crocheted flowers and knitted kerchiefs on her blog, so go check them out! Act fast, since they are sure to sell quickly.
– I got a message from Mary at FoxyKnits that she just returned from a koigu-buying trip in Canada. Apparently she cleaned out the barn and has koigu coming out her ears! FoxyKnits is where I got my Caryl’s Kerchief kit, a great and fun-to-knit kit. So if you have a hankering for some koigu, contact Mary!

Brainy Lady or Santa?

My birthday was last week, and I didn’t really make a big deal out of it because, well, I am a modest sort of gal (bwahahaha). So I was very surprised (and inifinitely delighted) when I received a lovely birthday package in the mail from the one and only Brainy Lady. This was after she sent me an amazing stationery haul, too! So check this out:
kirei na skaato.JPG
That pattern book is called “Pretty Skirts,” and pretty they are! Take a look:

Brainy Lady, you couldn’t have known how appropriate and timely this pattern book would be! Yup, I got a fancy new power tool for my birthday from Peter and my family and Mrs. H. I’ll share the details with you when I get it out of the box (first we have to do some furniture rearranging).

pink things

I’m still getting back into the swing of things after playing Ishi in the mountains, so today I’m just going to show you a couple of pink things. I made a little pink poncho earlier this year for my friend Wendy’s baby, but I apparently don’t know how big babies are, because the poncho fit Wendy’s 8-year-old much better. It was dubbed the “family poncho,” and yes, I’m still waiting for photos of each family member wearing it. Anyway, here is Lillie the 8-year-old modeling the poncho (and see that crocheted flower on it? They went to Action Hero Melissa’s crafty bazaar and bought it! Yup, the knitblogger world is converging!):
lillie in poncho.JPG
And here’s the other pink thing–my new Crocs! They are made of some sort of foam, so they are super light. I guess chefs wear them because they are very comfy and supportive or something. I ordered mine from Summit Hut, which took a while because they were backordered on the pink, and then the size was wrong (they run really big):

camping adventure

Well we are unpacked, and most of the laundry is done! It’s nice to be home, but it’s also kind of a letdown–post-holiday blues, I guess. We had a fun time, even though some things didn’t go quite as planned. First we went to Peter’s parents’ house in the mountains near Yosemite so we could celebrate Peter’s mom’s birthday (and also so we could drop off Deedlehead). I got some nice photos of her receiving birthday cake at a restaurant, but she told me, “I’D BETTER NOT SEE THAT ON YOUR BLOG,” so there you go!
We then headed off to Berkeley Family Camp near Groveland to see some friends from Oregon who always come down for camp. It was very high density and very active, but since it’s Berkeley, it was very fun and interesting, and freshly ground coffee was available at all times! We took a day trip to Hetch Hetchy Dam, which was pretty fascinating, and took a hike down to the river on a trail called Poopenaut. Why is it called this? Because you get totally pooped out! It’s only one mile each way, but that mile is so steep that you practically have to swing off of tree branches. It’s a good thing we had acquired some sour Jujyfruits at a mountain store for sustenance beforehand. Here’s a blurry shot of our friends:

vacation wendy and gang.JPG

It was then on to backpacking. We went to the Emigrant Wilderness north of Yosemite. The plan was to spend 3 nights and 4 days out there. We hoped to hike in to Chewing Gum Lake for the first night, which was about 4 miles in. After about a mile and a half, though, my boot felt kind of funny, like it was coming apart. Well, it was. The sole was coming completely detached! Mind you, these boots are 15 years old, but they are good boots. I think the glue just gave out. One guy on the trail gave us some white tape, another guy had a little bit of electrical tape, and Peter had some string, but it wasn’t looking too hopeful. We decided to set up camp at the first lake, Lake Powell, which was 2 miles in. I then walked back out to the car, got my running shoes (I also sucked down a lemonade and a bunch of Wheat Thins that were in the cooler), and ran/walked back to camp. It was only 2 miles, but the elevation was about 8,800 feet, so it felt much farther! Here’s a photo of Peter on the hike in:
vacation pp emigrant.JPG
The next day we planned to go to Toe Jam Lake (that’s really what it’s called), but it was another 7 miles or so, and that seemed really, really far to us, so we decided to go another couple of miles to Chewing Gum Lake, set up camp, then go on a day hike to Toe Jam the following day. We made it to Chewing Gum without incident. It’s a gorgeous lake. See?
vacation chewing gum from camp 2.JPG
I even took my knitting with me:
vacation tent knitting 2.JPG
Yeah, it’s a posed picture. I actually spent more time knitting on the granite slabs than in the tent.
The lake called to us, so we went swimming (okay, so I made it almost up to my waist, which is pretty good for a water wimp like me. It took me about 20 minutes to get that deep, too). There were quite a few other campers there, and they were all swimming like it was bath water, but I thought it was pretty darn cold. Anyway, Peter was getting out of the water, and suddenly his foot slipped, and he scraped off a chunk of skin on the bottom of his foot! It was one of those nasty skin flaps, and it was right on the ball of his foot. Ouch. Of course we had no first aid, so I had to go to the next camp and borrow some antibiotic ointment. Peter had to devise a pad out of a cut up washcloth and keep his sock on at all times. The day hike to Toe Jam was not looking very promising at that point!
Okay, so then it was time to make dinner, so I went to pump some water for cooking noodles. The pump was all stiff for some reason, and it was taking all my strength to pump little squirts of water. I reported back to Peter, so he went to pump some more water, and, oops, the pump died. Completely. We had no backup iodine pills or anything, and we only had two bottles of water. We decided that we had better get the heck off the mountain the next morning. We had to skip the hot cocoa and the morning coffee to conserve our water, and we just hightailed it out of there and headed to the town of Sonora, where the Aladdin Motor Inn beckoned to us with their $65 a night rooms with king-size beds and free HBO. Woohoo! After showering and doing some laundry, we went into Sonora to the yarn store (!) and ate burgers (a post-backpacking tradition, according to Peter) at a little grill next to the yarn store. We then returned to the Aladdin and stayed up until midnight watching Six Feet Under.
Is this interesting to anyone? Anyway, that’s about it for the vacation. We also went by the Bay Area to see this boat:
sea 1.JPG
Remember the super crafty Mrs. H from Portland? Well, another one of her amazing daughters is a scientist aboard this ship, which takes students out on research trips. We got a nice tour of the boat.
Okay, I have to go to bed now.

I’m BACK

Hello? Is anyone out there? We just got home from holiday (I love using that term) this evening, and I don’t have my act together enough to post properly, but I figured I should post SOMETHING, since my wacko brother says my blog is currently blank. We had a very nice vacation, but the backpacking portion didn’t go quite as planned. This photo might give you a bit of a hint:

off to the mountains

I’m heading into No Blog Land again. We are going backpacking and camping for a week. It should be fun, right? Anyway, we’ll be back Friday the 13th if all goes as planned.
Today I went to the Mid-State Fair for a short while. To be honest, I don’t much like going to the fair, but there was a performance I wanted to catch. I got there a bit early, so I thought I’d check out the beading demonstration that was advertised, but apparently the bead guy was a no-show! How lame. So then I went to Hot Dog on a Stick and got a lemonade and wandered over to the Home Arts building only to be confronted with a “no drinks or food” sign. Bummer. Finally I headed over to the Stampede Stage to see the performance:

belly.JPG

Belly dancing! [Okay, confession time–I’ve been taking belly dancing for a couple of months now. I am hopelessly and laughably bad, and I fear that one day soon my teacher will throw her hands up in disgust and kick me out of class, but you know, it is really fun! It’s very hard, too, especially for the quivering-hip challenged.]
Have a great week.
