thank goodness my mother is back

Hallelujah, my mother came back today (though one of the first things she said to me when my father was out of earshot was, “I want to go to Japan again”). Here she is unloading all her crap:
mom home.jpg
She brought me a few goodies, including these knitting books (well, one of them is primarily crochet, but that’s okay):

That one on the right says “Kussy’s Simple Sweaters & Knit Goods.” Who is Kussy? I don’t know.
Word on the street says Megan’s surgery went really well and that she is in good spirits! Thanks for all your well wishes. They mean the world to her.

food and flowers

Before I show numerous pictures of food, here’s a bit of fiber:
melissa flower.jpg
Action Hero Melissa crocheted this cute pin! I really want to learn how to crochet now (and I confess–I love those little toilet roll covers).
So today I went to lunch at Wildwood, one of Portland’s premier foodie spots, with Melissa and my friend Wendy. I had never been there before but have read a lot about it and heard good things. It was very, very yummy.
Melissa had a chopped salad of ham (prosciutto) and cheese (a white cheddar):

Wendy had the halibut:

And I had the pork loin with polenta. The pork came with a blackberry sauce! Very Oregon, non?

For dessert we shared a plate of little cookies and this sorbet dessert that had grapefruit sorbet, Meyer lemon sorbet, and ginger sorbet. Very refreshing!

I decided that the reason some of my photos have been blurry lately is because I’ve been drinking caffeinated coffee in the mornings (I usually have decaf). That’s my story for now, anyway.

my father is losing his mind

Well, he’s pretty far gone already, but right now he’s completely freaked out because he thought my mother was going to be gone for another week, but she’s coming home in 2 days. Pump up the meds!
Today I met Larissa Brown for coffee! It was a lot of fun. Not only is she an amazing knitter, but she is also a REAL artist who has her installations in galleries. Unfortunately, I forgot to take photos.
Megan has her mastectomy Wednesday, so please think cancer-killing and quick-healing thoughts for her!
Oh, gotta go. 24 is on.

yes, I’m supposed to be taking care of my father

Before I came up to Portland, I was telling myself that I would stick around the house more and be a Responsible Adult Daughter. I am, after all, practically middle aged. Though I HAVE been pretty successful with my vow to be in the house after dark and for dinner, I haven’t been quite as good at being here during the day. Today was no different. Mrs. H came just before 9am, and we headed out on yet another Fiber Fest. In addition to running some errands (including one to a sewing machine center where I discovered that I really NEED the Janome 6500 to add to my fleet of sewing machines), we went to Fabric Depot, Daisy Kingdom, and the Yarn Garden.
Here’s part of what I got at Fabric Depot (and no, I don’t know why I’ve been taking so many blurry pictures lately):
fab stash.jpg
The bowling fabric is for my father-in-law, since he’s going to be competing in a national bowling tournament in June! I also got some cheap cotton/acrylic TLC yarn. I’m hoping it’s like Cotton Ease, but we’ll see what happens.
Tonight we went to dinner at my favorite burger joint in the world–Skyline Burgers. It’s been in existence ever since I can remember, and though it’s changed hands a few times, the place still has personality for miles!

and the fun in portland continues!

I have to say that although I am a native Oregonian, I felt like a Californian today. It wasn’t even 70 degrees, but it was sunny and beautiful, and there were so many people in shorts! I even saw some shirtless guys (they were in the park, and I could see them because they were so pale they were glowing). I was dumbfounded. To me, sub70 degree weather is not shorts weather!
But on to the fun stuff. Insane brother and I walked down to the new REI (Peter was very impressed that we could WALK to REI) today then went to McMenamin’s to have lunch and visit Craig, cancer-fighting Megan’s brother. He’s been working at the pub for nearly a decade. Here he is proudly showing his creation–Craig’s Curried Chicken Peanut Soup:
craig.jpg
The reason his hair is so short is because he shaved it in November at a benefit for Megan!
This evening I went to my friend Wendy’s house (Wendy is the mother of Dr. Croissant) for Crafty Christmas, their craft group. Apparently some of the members come for the wine and conversation, not for the crafts.
crafty christmas.jpg
From left to right are Lisa, who brought some beading, Cara, who brought her WORK (but hey, she works for D. Sharp, who creates these amazing paper sculptures), and Marie, who does not craft and was thus recruited by Cara to fold paper. You can see my pumpkin fluff sweater in the foreground there. Not pictured are Wendy, Tracy (a non-crafter but a crafty storyteller), the girls–Dr. Croissant, the two Olivias, and baby Paulina, Rocky the dog, and Wendy’s husband Jay. We ate yummy pizza and laughed quite a lot!

wall of chocolate

Today we took an excursion to Edelweiss, a German deli in SE Portland. It’s a small place, but it is crammed full of German foods. Check out this display of chocolate:
edelweiss.jpg
And this is not even all the chocolate they have!! It’s a pretty fun place, and as my father said, “I can go nuts in there.” Oh, and thanks to Edelweiss, I am now addicted to kindereggs, chocolate egg shells containing toys. They are not distributed in the US because kids might swallow the toys, but one can order them from Canada or Germany. Look at my toy:

When you turn the handle, the guy gyrates!!

the great yarn excursion

Action Hero Melissa, Mrs. H, and I ventured out this morning to Woodland Woolworks. It is quite a haul to Carlton, where WW is located, but we braved the rain and the two-lane roads and made it. WW is basically a huge warehouse. We hit the “stash” room first, and though all the yarns, including various Rowan yarns, which I’ve been wanting to try (yes, I confess, I have never knit with Rowan yarns!), were 15 percent off, I didn’t buy any. We had fun sifting through the yarns even though the stash room was unheated. The “showroom” has samples of all their available yarns plus a lot of books and magazines and walls of needles. I must say that while it was all impressive, the most amazing part of that showroom was the swatches. They had the most incredible and intricate swatches I have ever seen!
We headed back to Portland and hit Lint, since it was the first day of their sale. A lot of the winter yarns were 30-40 percent off, and they also had a sale room (sorry about the blurry photos):
lint sale.jpg
That’s Melissa there rooting through the boxes. She showed enormous restraint, though, and bought NOTHING! I got some GGH Sombrero, a tape/ribbon yarn:
lint score.jpg
Has anyone used this stuff before? It calls for a pretty large needle, but I don’t know if I want something all loose and drapey. They had 5 balls of GGH Samoa that I wanted, but I need 7 to make the top I want, so I resisted. Sigh. GGH is another yarn I want to try.
It was a fun day, and I wish I could go adventuring like that every day! I leave you with these goodies that Mrs. H brought. The ribbons are from Farmhouse Fabrics. They have the BEST ribbons!

the great croissant taste-off

Team Croissant Portland geared up today for the Great Croissant Taste-Off, Portland edition. The team consisted of Dr. Croissant, aka Lillie, her mom Wendy, baby Paulina (who slept through the entire proceedings), and me. Here is Dr. Croissant in front of one of our contenders. Don’t you love her uniform? In case you can’t tell, she has a paper croissant taped to her hat. Also, I gave her a button that says, “I heart Warm Buns.”
croissant lillie.jpg
We decided to sample croissants from five Portland bakeries: the Pearl Bakery, Grand Central Bakery, Ken’s Artisan Bakery, Saint Honore Bakery, and Florio Bakery. Dr. Croissant made us charts for evaluation. We rated the croissants on the following criteria: appearance, cost, butteriness, flakiness, and taste.
croissant croissants.jpg
From left to right, we have Florio, Ken’s, Saint Honore, Pearl, and Grand Central (the one that is as big as Lillie’s head). After all the tasting was complete, Dr. Croissant declared Grand Central to be the best, while Wendy and I, the assistants to the doctor, felt Ken’s croissants were superior. They were not the most beautiful, but they had the best flavor. My motto is now “don’t judge a croissant by its appearance.”
We had to cut the session off after all the butter went to Dr. Croissant’s head and made her croissant crazy:

presto! peppermint candy

peppermint candy complete.JPG
As you can see, I sewed in the zipper, and Peppermint Candy, the 2x2x3x1 ribby by Bonne Marie, is complete! The pattern is great, but I did some weird stuff to it, so initially I was not thrilled with it. After wearing it for a few minutes, though, it began to grow on me. It is very toasty and comfy, so despite the monkey arms and the short body and the incredibly crappy underarm seaming, I like it okay. The photo was taken by the one-and-only Action Hero Melissa. We went to lunch today at clarklewis, a new restaurant in an industrial section of town. It was quite yummy, and as a bonus we got to watch them butcher some large animals (I wasn’t in FFA, so I could not identify the skinned animal).
On the way home, I stopped by Saint Honore Bakery, the fancy French bakery, for some treats. I had a hankering for a cookie, but there weren’t any (the horror!). I ended up getting a couple of outrageously priced eclairs:
saint honore eclair.JPG
As you can see, it is not a particularly large eclair. The price? $3.75 each. If it were hedonistically delicious, it’d be worth it. Sadly, the pastry was a bit on the soggy side, and the pastry cream was good but not great. Okay, so I wasn’t that sad, because I’m really NOT that picky about my treats, but you know, I was trying to be scientific about it all.
I also stopped by a party supply place that was around the corner from clarklewis and picked up a few things, including a little easter surprise for my crazy old father:

trapped in the loony bin

It’s a little hard organizing my thoughts into any sort of coherent fashion when I’m faced with this:
crazy sashi.JPG
I probably shouldn’t even show that photo, since it shows how crazy this household is. My insane brother watches TV on his weird old anniversary-edition Mac while he plays on the other computer. Right now he is laughing maniacally at some sitcom (I think/fear it’s that Whoopi show).
Talked to cancer-fighting Megan today. She is scheduled to have a mastectomy next week, on the 31st. She’s going to have the DIEP flap surgery, which entails taking fat from your stomach and sticking it into the boobular area. Basically, she gets a tummy tuck at the same time she gets her mastectomy! Her hair has started growing back, but it’s very patchy, so she has to keep shaving it. Her eyebrows and eyelashes are still absent, though, so we were jokingly calling her Powder. If you can’t laugh, what’s the point, right?
