choco choco choco lotta love

Because I have no knitting news to report (I have about a dozen more rows to knit before I begin the shoulder shaping on the Becky Wannabe sweat-urr), I feel the need to talk more about chocolate. Could it be because I just read a wonderful article at the San Francisco Chronicle web site about a former NASA tech who started a gourmet chocolate business called Cabaret Chocolates? How cool is that?!?
One of my New Year’s resolutions was to try more types of gourmet chocolates (as if I need to put it down on paper). I think I’ve only had a few new kinds, though. In NYC we went to Richart Chocolates, which was super fancy and delicious, and then of course there’s the Recchiuti chocolate we just tried. Other kinds I like are Dolfin and Michel Cluizel. Both are available from Chocosphere (incidentally, my insane brother worked at Chocosphere over the holidays packing up boxes of chocolate for lucky people. Yes, Chocosphere is based in Portland). So what kinds of chocolate do you like?
Life is short, my friends, so go out there and eat some chocolate!!!

first day of school

Today was the first day of school for Peter’s district (he’s a high school English teacher). He came home unscathed. To celebrate, I prepared Chocolate Gelato, which was very thick and hard and pretty darn tasty. I also grilled some pizzas on the bbq. The crust comes out wonderfully chewy on the bbq, but I still haven’t quite figured out how to get the toppings hot enough.
No knitting update, really, since I only knit a couple rows last night. I started falling asleep while knitting, so I decided I should just put it down. I picked up Cook’s Illustrated, which I had forgotten to read all the way through (!), and then I fell asleep! Oy vey, this old age …
Funny that Kerstin should mention L. A. Burdick, because I just received their catalog today. Let me tell you a little story–I spied L. A. Burdick the night we arrived in Boston/Cambridge. The very next morning, I went by there, but to my horror they were closed for remodeling for the ENTIRE DURATION of our vacation. How sad was I, and how much more sad am I now that I have the catalog and see all the wonderful goodies they have? Ahhh, well, at least I’ll get to go to Moonstruck Chocolates when I am in Portland.

Chocoholism

In honor of any visitors from Bonne Marie’s site, I’ll pretend I’m a good knitting blogger (and not the unfocused, random thoughts blogger that I truly am) and begin with a wee knitting update. I finished the stripe in the Becky Wannabe sweater and just have to continue with the pink to finish the back:
beck with stripe.jpg
Those of you familiar with the sweater will notice that I have a BLUE stripe where the white stripe should be. Why? Do I have a thing for pink, orange, and blue combos? In truth, the Canadian store from which I ordered my yarn did not have white, so they suggested blue. I rather like it, so I’m not complaining.
Now, on to chocolate. Some friends went to San Francisco last week and very thoughtfully and generously brought back some Recchiuti Chocolates, which I have been dying to try for some time now. The box was a sampler of a few dark chocolate varietals, and there were INSTRUCTIONS for tasting! We were to go in order from mildest to strongest, so Peter and I sat down and had our chocolate tasting. It was very fun and delicious:
recchuiti.jpg
By the way, I am working on a gallery of completed projects, but since I am trying to code the whole thing in html (I took an online class on beginning web design at the beginning of the summer. I know, completely dorky), it will most likely take me, ohhh, a million years! If anyone has any simpler and more efficient suggestions, please let me know.

bring me your sweets

We live in a rinky dink, hick town. In the past couple of years, however, there has been an influx of French people, and they have been bringing their culture and, very happy about this, their FOOD. In case you haven’t noticed, I am highly food motivated. Well, today a French/Mediterranean bakery/cafe opened THREE BLOCKS FROM MY HOUSE. I stopped by this afternoon and picked up these:
panolivo.jpg
I already ate the profiterole. It had coffee cream. The top had a dollop of coffee caramel stuff in the shape of a heart, but the girl put it in a box that was not quite tall enough, so it got smeared. I am so happy that bakery is here, and I am even happier because another French bakery is scheduled to open within the next few months!
Did y’all go see Bonne Marie’s blog today? I was so flattered and also embarrassed by all the nice things she said! She is truly a kind hearted soul!
Okay, gotta go finish the stripe on the Becky Wannabe sweater now and watch a rerun of MI-5 that I missed. I heard they annihilate Tom’s girlfriend and her daughter! Those Brits are so harsh (doncha love it?).

time to stripe

I have completed 74 rows on the Becky Wannabe Sweater (to see a photo, go to the Blue Blog), so now it’s time to start the striped section:

Dede had an emergency today. She got 5 foxtails up her little schnoz. It was karma, I think, because she was messing around by the grapes in the backyard, and she knows she’s really not supposed to do that. In Japanese there is a phrase, “Bachi ga ataru,” which basically means if you do something you know you shouldn’t, it’s going to come back to haunt you. I heard that phrase all the freakin’ time from my mother, and she was always right. Poor Chunkster Melonhead had to spend the whole day at the vet. First they had to “empty her stomach” because of course she ate breakfast RIGHT before the foxtail incident, then they had to anesthetize her to extract these (WARNING: GRAPHIC PHOTO TO FOLLOW):

One last thing: HotWire rules! I was getting panicky because the price of plane tickets was going up DAILY. I checked all the online ticketing places, and finally I grew desperate enough to try HotWire, which is like Priceline in that you have to commit to a purchase before knowing the flight times. I was scared I was going to get all 6am flights, but it worked out really well, and I ended up saving $84!! The only drawback is I won’t get to see Jonathan Lethem read at Powell’s.

Ay, there’s the rub

I made a dry rub for some chunks of pork today, but I don’t think I completely grasp the concept of the dry rub. It worked, and the meat cooked, but AIYAA, MAMA, SO HOT & SPICY. Yup. Burned our mouths off. The leftovers are salvageable, I think. I shall slice them up and use it in pasta or something.
Conceding to the airlines and their very sneaky ways of upping the prices by hundreds of dollars at the drop of a hat, I looked once again for tickets to Portland. I pretty much decided on a ticket that would put my arrival late at night, but then I went to the Powell’s Books site and noticed that Jonathan Lethem, the author of the achingly funny and wonderful Motherless Brooklyn, will be speaking that very same day. I might have to find another flight arrival time so I can go hear him!
Not much knitting to report. I reverted back to the circular needles for the Becky Wannabe sweater. It’s slow going. One knitting tidbit, though. I sent some photos of my ChicKami and other ChicKnit items to Bonne Marie of ChicKnits fame, and she said she will post them on her site on Saturday!

plane ticket conspiracy

I’ve been looking online for plane tickets to Portland, and last week they were really cheap, $142 to be exact. Well, I waited, and yesterday when I checked, they all went up to $242 or more! What gives? So aggravating!
I have been working a little bit on the Becky Wannabe Sweater. I am having some needle issues. I started it on Addi Turbo circulars, but the purling was going kind of slowly (I’m a slow purler), so I thought maybe I could speed things up with some straights. I ordered some Addi Turbo straights in 14″ length, and, well, they are a bit long for my taste. I like to jab the end of the needle into my side, sort of, and the 14″ is too long. It forces me to outstretch my arms in an awkward position. I think I’ll switch back to the circulars, since I discovered they discontinued the 12″ version (which would have been a perfect length). I know I could switch to bamboo or something, but I want to be sure I have the correct 4mm sizing, and it just seems too risky to switch brands.

drumroll, please

Voila! ChicKami is finished!
chickami complete.jpg
I washed it, and I really like the way it turned out. I wore it today, and it was very comfy indeed.
And another drumroll for our new Heywood Wakefield china closet!
heywake.jpg
This is why we drove up to San Francisco on Sunday. We found the china closet on Craig’s List. We’ve been looking for something to hold our Fire King collection for years but could never find anything we a) liked or b) could afford. We’ve been coveting Heywood Wakefield for years now, so we’re very excited about this piece.
And now for some bad news. I was going to dogsit for Hedi this week. Her pug Oji is very sweet and cute, but he and Dede don’t seem to like one another. I was hopeful they’d work things out, but I don’t think they will. Today we did a trial run, and they tried to kill each other (under the Heywood Wakefield dining table). Oji’s eye was bleeding, and Dede had some scrapes and rugburn-like injuries. Crazy canines! Here’s a photo of Dede trying to cool off in the truck on a very hot San Francisco day (she CHOSE to jump back into the truck while Peter was loading the china closet into the bed).

House, Painted

BEFORE:
house pressure washing.jpg
AFTER (that’s a match of Benjamin Moore “Alexandria Beige,” an historical–or hysterical–color):
house after.jpg
Stay tuned for photos of the completed ChicKami! I tried it on pre-wash, and it fit with a little room for shrinkage, so we’ll see how much it actually shrank. Oy.
P.S. Happy Birthday to the Hedster today!

Just the straps, ma’am

Just have to knit up the straps and ChicKami will be complete:
chickami strapless.jpg
If I get it finished tonight, maybe I’ll wash it tomorrow and see what happens!
It’s been one of those days. Peter was all set to paint the house today, and what happens? It RAINS. It’s August in California, for goodness sake! So now I am still sealed up in the shrinkwrapped house! Also, tomorrow we were planning to go to San Francisco for the day, but our plans had to be changed at the last minute. Now Peter will paint either tomorrow or Saturday, and we’ll go to SF Sunday, hopefully. Positive thinking.
